The difference a few decades make. Back in the 80s it was a prospering mall. 90s and early 2000s it was still hanging in there, but big box stores were taking a toll. Internet didn't help, but the decline was already well under way. Failed malls aren't anything new either. The Dixie Mall depicted in Blues Brothers went defunct around 1978. Few malls were ever destined to last. King of Prussia Mall near Philly is among the notable exceptions that's still prospering, but having to spend a lot to stay relevant and drive traffic.

"West Mifflin will have a beautiful site". For what? Nobody is going to build anything. The country is on the demise.

Looks to be relatively flat and presumably has good highway access. Stores, warehouses, and/or apartments are likely future uses for the site.

My presumption is that they've been collecting school taxes and local taxes on the structure ever since it was erected. So when it finally hits the ground the taxes will end. Based on real estate prices that piece of real estate may end up being a pricey location that others may want. Many people asked many decades ago why they knocked the steelmills down when they were viable buildings. The answer was they couldn't compete pricewise on the steel and they had to continue to pay taxes on the structures versus vacant land. It's pretty easy to figure out what to do, they're not making any more land. And unusual situation occurred in New Stanton Pennsylvania when the Volkswagen plant shut down and then ultimately Sony. The state took it over and that was the end of the school taxes for a magnificent structure that was a big part of the school taxes in that area.
