Well, only inasmuch, if we had acted urgently and globally about climate change 40 years ago, sure. There is an old clip of Joe Rogan (not a fan) but he recounts a conversation with an LA firefighter telling him that this situation would likely arise, and if it did there would be little the Fire Department could do. It's a natural disaster, and beyond the scope of human intervention, just like earthquakes and hurricanes. Blaming people just reveals you as an idiot. The tragedy was largely preventable because folks listened to their officials and evacuated. Seriously, do yourself a favour and try talking to someone smarter before you post such inane BS in future. You are clearly not very smart.

This may be the first $1T loss event in US history. This area is so expensive, so the rebuilding costs will be simply enormous. Take $2M-$3M as average cost to rebuilt each home, multiply that by the number of homes gone already...it is catastrophic. The worst consequence will be the the enormous insurance increases for ALL areas that have even slight fire risks and insurance companies refusing to ensure properties in those areas outright.
@KeyshowJi15 күн бұрын
3m may be the average house value but the structure value doesn’t remotely approach that. If you have a 1.5m house in, say, river oaks houston, the structure could easily be 600-900k. For a 1.5m hpuse in CA, the structure might be worth $70k, the replacement value maybe 250k-400k, and the higher cost of rebulding to newer better standards at most 500k.

Los Angeles fire compared to 1906 quake fire in San Francisco; The fires destroyed approximately 25,000 - 28,000 buildings across 490 city blocks. The fires cost an estimated $350 million at the time, which is equivalent to $8.9 billion in 2023. The earthquake and fires killed over 3,000 people and left around 225,000 people homeless. The city was nearly rebuilt by 1915, took 9 years to recover.

People have absolutely no concept of history. Every recent event is THE WORST EVER, with zero knowledge of the past. Look up the Peshtigo fire which burned well over one million acres, or the Kanto fire which is said to have killed an estimated 140k people. Also the 2018 Camp fire which basically leveled Paradise and a couple surrounding towns. Again...this is a horrible event but it pales in comparison to many others. Myopic and shortsighted. There have been horribly destructive and deadly wildfires in CA for decades, even under Republican leadership. The decision to put out every single fire no matter what didn't help. It interrupted the natural processes of fire season. Also, extensive building in fire-prone areas as well. I can't stand Newsom, but this isn't his fault or the "DEI" nonsense either. Stop parroting everything your news sources tell you.

When it's 5% humidity, everything starts a fire and when the winds are 80+ mph the fires have tonnes of oxygen and can fly pretty far. Aka, mother nature is probably the biggest arsonist by far.

NASA FIRMS map... though weirdly the sunset fire isn't on the map? But that is the closest you can get to raw mapping data, and it is generally only 30min to 3 hours behind real time depending on the area you are looking at and what satellites are focused on it.
