Marie, It's so unfortunate that modern journalism relies on salacious gossip for profit rather than fact. I wonder what Woodward and Bernstein would have though about the state of news reporting today where news is business so manufcturing controversy over rumours is far more profitable than any evidence based reporting and where informing the people is attacked as fake news?

Why? You bringing in politics into your classification of what is right and wrong is what's wrong with this polarised world. Truth is truth. Decency is decency. Don't bring politics into universal virtues. Accept that ppl will have different viewpoints and beliefs. What's important is being united on the truth. Despite differing political beliefs.

Thank you for this excellent and essential recap, CBS Sunday Morning! Thank you, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein for your persistence, willingness to accept one another's talents and differences, and your primal understanding the gravitas of the events unfolding. Thanks to the once upon a time golden age of journalism. I was a young adult then, and knowing and having validated there existed the conviction of revealing and standing by the truth in terms of its value in protecting our wounded, damaged, and imperfect and because of slavery deeply flawed democracy, resulted in a moment for once, when Nixon was forced to resign, of feeling a deep sense of pride in being an American. Thank you for this, and posthumous gratitude to Mark Felt, Deep Throat, a true American patriot. I lived through this once, and in my heart, I am once again looking forward to being a proud American when Trump/Pence are no longer in the White House although it breaks my heart to have to live through it all a second time; apparently, some of us are agonizingly slow learners.

I remember watching the US Senate special committee hearings the summer of 1973 at 16 yrs old and watching presidential aide Alexander Butterfield reveal the existence of the Oval Office taping system. August of 1974, Nixon was hounded out of office. That had never happened before. We can thank two young, enthusiastic reporters for all of that.

"Remember the Sabath, to keep it Holy". At video minute :23, Woodward says the editors called him into work on Saturday, the day the burglars were arrested.. He says the editors knew he was the only person that would be willing to come in to work on Saturday. This idea has stuck in my mind the way a sliver sticks in my foot: the idea is that we frequently uncover hidden criminal conduct after we have violated the ten commandment ourselves. Most people engaged in corruption and criminal conduct don't announce in public the crimes they plan to commit. It goes on in secret, in the dark.

He looked into things again, being a man of action. Mustn't, you'll find who is pulling the strings, Trump being a man of purpose is called to do so especially when they rise up and insnare him and his family. Who are the real crime bosses? You know, it's kind of ridiculous to make these two individuals out to be public service heros. In 1972 they were two low level journalists hungry - like any young people - to make names for themselves and careers. And they landed on a HUGE story and went for it. Great. But did they do it for expressly for America? For democratic civil society? To make a better world? Possibly. The implication here is that they did --- but in proper context, they likely did it just as much for the excitement and their personal interest.
