CCM & Reebok Goalie Gloves: 580 vs 590 vs 600 Break Comparisons

A common question when looking at buying CCM and Reebok gloves is, "What are the differences between the breaks?" So I got ALL three Reebok and CCM glove angles and tried them out over the course of five months to show you the advantages and disadvantages of each, along with a little research of what goalies (and what KINDS of goalies) in the NHL are using them and why. If you have any questions feel free to comment and I'll be sure to answer them! Enjoy!

Still the best video on that subject. I've watched more recent ones where I couldn't understand the differences. Here it's just perfect. Thanks a lot!

Hubert, you have no idea how much I truly appreciate you taking the time to tell me that. I made these videos so long ago, back when I still loved being a goalie. Sometimes I still think about those times fondly, and hope one day I regain the spark. Your comment really helps me point in that direction. Who knows what the future holds? We'll see. But for now I'm just really appreciative of you. Good luck out there!

@@t0myTTV Thank you very much for your answer. I really meant it. It's great that people such as you are sharing this kind of knowledge. I played as a goalie when I was young (4-18), and back then, I had no idea what kind of gear I used. Most of the time, I'd just buy some used stuff from an older goalie. I joined a roller/inline hockey club last year (so 17 years later) and I 'inherited' some Passau goalie gear that belongs to the club. But I'm struggling a bit to get back on track as so much has changed in terms of gear, moves, and even positioning; without even speaking about the differences between ice and hard floor for sliding and stuff. Anyway, thanks for your video, which helps me understand (maybe?) why my puck catching might not be as good as it used to be.

Great video. Much appreciated. Goalie Gloves are expensive and so this makes me feel confident as to which glove i should buy next . I always wore Vaughn and loved them. The last glove I purchased was a Reebok 590 and it feels awkward .. now i know that i must look to find a '600 Break 45 degree' glove.

I did not see any other comments on this or not, but it the name 580 break comes from the original Koho 580 series and the 590 comes from the original Koho 590 series. The name of the glove breaks come from those Koho series'. The 600 is just the stock CCM break.

Definitely know what you mean, Dillon! Funny enough since I had used the 580 back in juniors and the start of college (so about 4-5 years), it felt very natural at first. But then again the glove back then was molded a little differently. I think many people who were pitchers in baseball will feel comfortable with the 580, as pitching gloves tend to work similarly to the 580 break. Forgot to include that, haha! I was never able to get used to using traditional glove positioning for stickhandling.. no idea what it was, but back then I used to do the Cujo method, which was horrendous. Once I worked on the Turco method in college (and switching to the 590 break) I got far, far better, but since then felt like it hasn't been a strong part of my game due to changing breaks to the 580 angle for my Revokes, P4s, and to begin my XLTs. Glad I'm back with the 590 now. :)

Hey Tomy, I remember watching this video when it came out way back in the day, still great informative content all these years later. I was browsing around ACHA rosters, as one does, and I was surprised to see a 40 year old playing for Wash U, and even more surprised when I thought I recognized the guy. Who would have thought the guy telling me the differences in glove breaks would actually be a PHD philosophy student, what a funny world. BTW what's the WJHL, I've never heard of it and can't find any record of it online, pretty solid numbers though. All the best, a kind stranger.

Always love watching your videos. Great info. Currently I'm using a Reebok P4 Intermediate glove (I have small hands so hard to close the senior ones) & I love it. Im trying to find something very similar. Its just worn out and I get a stinger at least 2-3 times a game. It opens very wide & I play with my finger tips up. What would you recommend for maximum protection and good closure/open
@t0myTTV

Thanks, Johnathon! One thing you can do is order a pro glove with an intermediate palm. It'll still give you the protection you need, but the internals will be smaller. Look into that! Good luck!!

Just a quick question I have the 590 break on a reebok 18k glove, I was using an old CCM Heaton (Martin Brodeur), did the goalie catchers shrink in size over the years as the newer glove is smaller in the overall size or would this be due to the model/brand? Thanks heaps and great vid!
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 9 жыл бұрын
YES, they absolutely did! Back in the early 2000s the NHL game out with the new sizing guidelines that shrunk the gloves by quite a bit, as well as shrunk the width of the leg pads. I kind of like the gloves being slightly smaller since you can control your stick a little better, but obviously that comes with the loss of some glove size. Whatever works for you!

Hey Tommy how are the stingers on the XLT 590 pro palm? Tried one on in the store and the crease seems where it closes seems to be lacking. Great closure obviously but it feels too good off the shelf to be protective after some break down.....

Wolfhawk40 I believe by stock the Kohos come as 590, but also has the possibility of 580 break. Varly uses the 600 style glove, but really you could go with either the 600 or 590 and you'll be perfectly fine. Good luck!

Big question, I'm interested in switching to Reebok but I've been a Vaughn user the past couple of years, I know you recommended the 600 break but i have a one piece V5 7990 and I'm fingers up. Would you suggest I try the 590 and just get used to the different feel of the Reebok glove?
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 9 жыл бұрын
Anthony Lancellotti That's a very fair question, and going from Vaughn to Reebok/CCM will be a HUGE switch but I truly think you're going to love it. What I would recommend is this: if you really liked your Vaughn glove, stick with the 600. But if you had any issues with the Vaughn glove and because you do play fingers up, go ahead and try the 590; I don't think you can go wrong either way, really, and you'll get used to it. Good luck!

A little late to the punch here, but I ordered a Supreme One90 Int glove online, and the angle of the thumb protector has been making my hand sore. Should I return it and maybe get a glove with a lesser angle? Knowing the angle of my glove would help too
@t0myTTV

+The Miguelodon Well, I doubt you'll be able to return it since you used it. But if it's hurting your thumb and you don't think it's something you can get used to or break-in the glove to fix, then I'd keep it and keep working on it.

Markus Paukku If you're fingers up and a good stick handler, I'd go with the 590 break. I had the same issue as you with the EFlex Pro glove.. it felt great and at first everything was fine. But my stickhandling suffered a bit, and I started missing pucks and wasn't sure why. Since switching to the 590 it's been FANTASTIC.. both catching and puckhandling has improved immensely. @t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 8 жыл бұрын
+Kyle1264x I think someone else with an 860 was having some problems, too. The way I break in my gloves is to put hot water on the palm for one minute, then run the hot water down the cuff for another minute. Put your hand in, close it, then, keeping it closed, take your hand out and wrap it in a towel. Put it under a couch or some weights for 24 hours. Then, after the 24 hours of it being closed, take it out of the towel, open it up all the way and lay it on the ground flat and put it back under the couch or some weights for another 12 hours. Then it should both open all the way and close perfectly. Hope that helps!

Do you have any experience with the Brian's G-netik glove? I am looking to switch from that glove to a CCM glove with a 600 break and you mentioned that it is almost a 40-45 degree break. Do you think that it would be an easy switch for someone like me who absolutely loved the G-Netik's 35 degree break? Thanks!
@t0myTTV

***** Oddly, Reebok/CCM now says the Price glove is like a 75 degree glove.. to be honest, I don't even really understand it fully, as it didn't feel like it was between the 60 and 90 degree breaks, but rather it feels like it's a 40-45 degree break as I mentioned. So I'm a bit confused, myself, about the actual degrees, but my comparisons and comments still stand. Now, as far as the G-Netik, I did try my buddy's G-Netik set and I really felt like the glove was extremely similar to my 590. In the sense of the updated degrees, that makes sense since the G-Netik is 35 degrees and the closest Reebok/CCM is apparently the 590/60 degree break. I caught just fine with the G-Netik coming from the 590, so I don't think it would be too big of a switch for you. Hope that helps!

Haha, that's your muscle memory being built for one angle. It'll come as you work on it! If you can, get some practice time or stick and puck time where you and a shooter can spend literally 15-30 minutes just on glove shots. You'll get it soon enough!

as someone who uses their glove as basically a second blocker, like the king, and Hiller, would you say that the 60 degree break would be best? I use a stock Vaughn now, would getting that 60 degree angle open up the glove any wider? I also feel like the thumb is too big and I can't seem to find a comfortable angle to keep the face of the glove, square to the shooter. would a 60 degree help with that, at all?
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 9 жыл бұрын
Danny Bridges I really think the 60 degree would be good for you for a couple reasons. First and foremost is that the blocking surface is absolutely huge on the 60 degree break, which is why you see goalies like Rinne really get that glove wide open. Another benefit is the upward angle of the entire face of the glove, which makes it much more comfortable to keep square to the shooter. I find other gloves can be downright numbing to try to do the same thing, whereas the 60 degree Reebok naturally allows your hand to be positioned to do it comfortably. Hope that helps!

I have bounced around from 590 to 600 and again to 590 and still have not fell in love with one over the other. Can you recommend which glove would be ideal for me between the eflex line and XLT's? I want to be able to play the puck and have traditional glove positioning. Also, I am usually in Pro padding but considering moving to practice padding. Will it hinder my catching at all once broken in?
@t0myTTV

Well, if you haven't fallen in love with one, that's not a bad thing. It could be worse.. you could hate them both, ha! For the combo you want to go for, I'd go with the 600. Now, if you go with practice padding, realize you're probably not going to get a good seal when you go to close the glove. I'd personally stick with either pro or, as I do, game ready, which is the thinnest but also allows you the most flexibility. Hope that helps!

I was in a 600 ccm earlier and found that by the end of the season the T and inner palm was completely worn and slightly distorted. This is the reason why I went back to an XLT 590. The XLT somehow felt more sturdy and retained shape better but a bit too bulky. I'll probably give the Eflex 2 one more shot at a 600 break with pro padding and hope I finally truly adapt to it.

There is a new type of padding in the palm of both kinds of gloves. But the wear in your 600 is really odd.. I've never heard of such a thing. If you don't dry your stuff out after use, make sure you do.. I've never had any wear issues with any Reebok/CCM/Koho gloves.

John Greene Absolutely, John.. I didn't start playing goalie full-time til I was about 13 or 14. At 15 I got picked up by pure chance by a local high school team. When I was 17 I moved to New Market, ON to play (after trying out for the Texas Tornado, who sent me to Boston, who then sent me to New Market). Decided up there that quite honestly I didn't have the work ethic to make hockey my career, and ended up going to college and playing club and inline hockey just for fun. Had a ton of success in inline hockey, and my club ice hockey team disbanded after my Freshman year. During college I also served as the EBG for the Missouri River Otters, but never did get in any games. After college I took a couple years off to rekindle the flame, and now I play advanced men's leagues and dabble at the occasional pro tryout even though I'm far too old, ha! It was certainly unusual, but I'm having fun now, and that's all that matters.

Tommy, I know this is a random comment years later, but I’ve been using a tps xlite goalie glove from 2004. My buddy just gave me a ccm 600 break that I cannot for the life of me get used it. It’s very stiff and 2 years old and won’t break in all the way. There’s a little bump in the palm,which pretty much makes it not close all the way. I have to sell it. My question is do you have any idea what type of break the almost 20 year old TPS xlite might be? I want my next glove to close like the tps because I like it so much. Im guessing it’s not a 600 because it feels very different from the 600 ccm I had. So that leaves either 580 or 590. Any ideas? I did try on a Bauer Mach which I think is a 590 at goalie monkey and didn’t mind it. But want a glove closest to my TPS. Thanks!
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 9 ай бұрын
Interesting question! Honestly, I only barely remember the XLite series.. and so I could be misremembering what it felt like. Personally, I remember it feeling very much like a Vaughn in its 'feel' but not necessarily in its closure. It had more of a "pancake" feel like the Vaughns do, but I don't remember a ton about the break itself. I would very much doubt it was a 580 since that was very unique to CCM at the time (and still is) and the 590 might be closer, but I don't think that's quite right, either. If you're insistent on CCM/True, I would try the 590. It's a great all-around break. If you want the same feel and closure as your old TPS, I'd look at the Vaughn line, but honestly I can't give you a very good recommendation as I've *never* used Vaughn, and I haven't even played goalie in... maybe two years now? So I haven't kept up with the gear at all. Sorry I can't be more helpful but hopefully that helped somehow! Good luck!

Oliver Hannula Well, there's a lot of wants there that might not all happen, haha! If you like to play the puck and you want a good catching glove, I'd first recommend the 590. You can order it with the pro palm or even practice palm if you want a LOT of padding, and the practice palm will make it REALLY stiff, which is the opposite of flexible, so I'm not sure what you mean by wanting stiff but flexible. I always order game ready and have zero issues with stingers, but in your case I would recommend the pro to give you some stiffness while still remaining more flexible than the practice. Hope that helps!

John Greene Well, I see what you're getting at but the closures don't really work that way. It's really hard to describe, but the 580 break closes so that the thumb of the glove closes within the outer potion of the other fingers/glove T. Without a glove on there still aren't any fingers really touching, but the fingers tend to curl around the pad on the palm of your hand more tightly and lower than the other breaks. The 590 and 600 breaks, as far as the hand closure goes, is very similar, and your fingers simply move up the thumb portion of your hand on to the thumb itself. While the angle between those is likely another 15-20 degrees (60 for the 590; 40-45 for the 600), it's not really a noticeable difference as far as your hand closure goes. I know it's a bit difficult to imagine, sorry!

The original model numbers (580 and 590) come from the old Koho models where those breaks were used. Prior to the 590 glove, all the 580s had the same angle. With the 590 you could, of course, get the new break, or what's called the 60. (Complicating it, of course, is the fact that there's a 90 is the 590 when it's actually a 60 degree break.. and the old 560 was a 90 degree break, ha!) As for 600? I think they just chose the next number up, even though the break is in the middle of the other two. Not great planning, but at that point you couldn't go with "585 break" because there was a 585 pad, as well. Hope that helps!

Any tips for improving my catching accuracy as I get a lot of shots to the Palm lately and it has cost me a few goals. I'm out with a concussion right now and just got my pads so I want to get right into improving my play with my new pads thanks and keep up he good work. I'm a high school goalie playing varsity for my first year so a lot of pressure is on me and really want to improve!

+Chaldian Hey, Chaldian! Best way to figure out the break is to compare its construction with the gloves shown in the video. You should be able to tell by the sew lines in the palm and how the T comes together. There's no doubt you're going to be going through a LOT of changes between those pads and pants, but that's a good thing! It will take time, but just getting used to rotating your hips and chest during butterfly recoveries will go a long way. Don't get discouraged if it feels like your movement is slowed for a while; that's true, but hopefully you make up for it in size, and over time you'll build new muscle to get quick again. As for your glove, it's all about muscle memory, so once you're all healed up, take some time out in practice and just work on WATCHING the puck as it enters your glove. Over and over and over! Build that muscle memory, and then you'll be good enough to where you won't have to watch it in every time (though you still should!). Good luck with the healing process! Hope you recover quickly and get back to varsity! Good luck!

+GoalieCreaseNet thanks a lot man I've been pretty bummed as I have had nothing to do except sit on my phone which I shouldn't really do either but I'm clear to play tomorrow but I'm at my brothers hockey tournament so I won't get to use them when they are broken in until Wednesday maybe on Monday but it won't be broken in.

+GoalieCreaseNet is there a better way to have a conversation with you as I think the long KZbin string might become a problem. Thanks I'm really wanting to improve and you always seem pretty open and like a good teacher. Keep up the great work!

I have a ccm Eflex trapper, I'm assuming this a 590 break?
@t0myTTV

Depends. I believe the EFlex came in the 600 break, as well.

What break is the eflex 2 stock glove?
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 7 жыл бұрын
There really isn't a "stock" break; it's up to the retailer what they order, which typically is either the 590 or 600.

Tommy I currently have a Bauer Reactor 4000 glove and I'm looking for a new one. Which of the Reebok breaks is comparable to that one? Have you tried the new Passau 60* glove..which one would that be comparable to? Thanks
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 9 жыл бұрын
Good question! I'm not certain which one would be close to the 4000.. if I remember correctly -- and I could be wrong -- the 4000 is more like a 40 degree break or somewhere in there, in which case the closest one for Reebok/CCM would be the 600 break. I haven't yet tried the Passau 60 degree break yet, but I know some who have and they're really, really liking it. For that one the 590 break is the most comparable. Hope that helps!
