Please note: I had my reservations about using a political figure in the videos. However, Barack Obama's words spoken at NASA fit very nicely with the video - especially with the ending (watch to see what I mean). My videos are technical and are not meant to be political in any way - please do not take them as such. There are plenty of political KZbin channels out there, but this is not one of them. This is a technical networking channel and I do not discuss matters regarding the Queen, the UK parliament, the prime minster, Brexit or the price of bread on this channel (or the politics of any other country). Please do not make political comments on this channel, but feel free to discuss GNS3, programming, networking and other relevant networking topics. All non-relevant comments will be removed.

It's simple. Learn both Python AND CCNA/CCNP/CCIE. I use Python for penetration testing, and networking tasks. Learn both. You do not need to know EVERYTHING about Python, jut learn it in terms of your job and tasks. It will make learning the language easier, and the information will stick better.
@kenmurphy42597 жыл бұрын
I think we all need to remain realistic as Network Engineers. You still need to understand how a network works regardless of whether you automate or not. And I wouldn't take much stock in recruiters or LinkedIn for that matter. Recruiters haven't a clue what's required in the real world. Yes it's important to learn about virtualization, docker, yang, yaml, Ansible, Python etc., But at the end of the day we still have standard non SDN driven networks in 90% of the environments out there and we still need to fix these when they break.
@davidbombal7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments Ken - always nice to hear your thoughts. Agreed - automation can help you very quickly mess up a network if not done right. But listen to the packet pushers podcast I link below for a very interesting perspective on this (better consistency, better implementation, quicker etc). One of the reasons that I have only created Python and Ansible courses using the traditional CLI (not NETCONF / REST etc) is like you say - most environments are non SDN at the moment, but that doesn't stop us automating parts of it. I did like this recruiter's comments as it is inline with a lot of current market trends. I agree, you cannot just take their word for things like this, but if it is in line with what lots of others are saying, it is an interesting perspective to add to the mix. As mentioned in the video, Cisco have been saying similar things for a while. I also agree that network engineers will still be network engineers, but the days of CLI only are numbered I think - especially in large environments - hence me stating that you should become a machine augmented network engineer. Do both networking and augment that with automation. I thought this packet pushers episode was really good on perspective - they got above 90% improvement with automation - seems crazy not to automate: packetpushers.net/podcast/podcasts/show-353-business-impact-network-automation/
@SamAndrew275 жыл бұрын
Depends on the environments you are managing. Small-to-Medium businesses, yes. Enterprise however, they are rapidly moving into SDN (if not already there) and that trend will only continue to rise, just as virtualzing servers did about a decade ago (or perhaps even earlier).

I am learning C first since I am a duel disaplined engineer and C applies to both chemical/process engineering and electrical/networking. I am noticing that C, VB and Python are not hugely different. Also someone still has to build out the original CLI for your network before you can automate its deployment. Base fundamentals cant be disrupted.
@campagnollo5 жыл бұрын
David, I'm feeling a little frustrated about merging Python and networking. Contrary to most network engineers, I welcome it; CS grad. But utilizing it has been hard. Been stuck in NOC positions that won't allow programming. Not sure how to expand this very special skill set.
@jssaz22907 жыл бұрын
This is TOTALLY TRUE! Hello David, I hope you are doing great. Thank you very much for this video, I needed to hear something like this. I am CCNA with a bachelors in electronics and telecommunications engineer, and I consider myself competent with CISCO CLI and several protocols. I arrived to Japan on April of this year with the goal of enroll in a Computer Science master degree, and I have to mention that I am feeling how the software engineers have the edge over me sometimes. They are not familiar with deep networking concepts, protocols and CLIs, but when the time comes of setting up virtualization environments, linux, repositories and version control, git, vagrant, ansible, SDN and NFV environments setup, python (actually you can name a language and they have developed at least 1 project with it) and DevOps in general they are like NINJAS! Sometimes I feel like a microbe. I am a witness of how true is the fact that software engineers with their skills are more technically fluent with the new paradigms that the networking industry is taking us into. This things are REAL, we need to develop and add software engineer skill to our skill set in order to become more efficient and confident for the new demands of networking. Thanks again David, and I am looking forward for your September Linux course (I use Ubuntu a lot for setting up ONOS with Quagga, also Ryu), and hope that thanks to your experience in the future you can provide us with more guidance about the skills we need to develop. Sayonara!

I think a reality check is needed. Apart from the fact that it would take years to be competent in a particular area of networking let alone be on a required level for such a broad topic but now Network engineers are expected to know Linux and a programming language and VMware and a host of another specialist subject. At best this is a joke at worst its a group of a jack of all trades with minimal knowledge in all areas. "We will pay you the same for saving us a shed load of money and knowing 10 specialisms on top of your actual job".
@davidbombal7 жыл бұрын
I was also told this when VoIP was new 15 years ago .... but look what happened. I have a long list of technologies that I have had to learn and then forget as other technologies replaced them (remember ISDN, Frame Relay, ATM, Token Ring, Analog modems, PBXs and the many others over the years?). The only constant is change... and that means you need to be constantly learning. What about AI? Will any of us have jobs in 10 to 20 years? Only time will tell what happens...

As a networking / Voice vendor who's sole job it is to program and install multiple different networking and voice services for customers im having a hard time seeing where SDN / programming comes into play for my situation. While we do maintain our customers services after they are in place how does SDN come in on the implementation side of things when each installation is brand new and different from the last? Im not seeing a way to automate that process but my lack of SDN experience limits my outlook.
@davidbombal7 жыл бұрын
Think of any repetitive task that you do. Anything repetitive is a good candidate for automation. How long does it take you to apply a configuration to 100 switches and tweak settings? How many times have you typed exactly the same command like "router ospf 100" or "vlan 100"? How many times have you pasted a config onto a network device from notepad? Automation is more useful at scale and when repetitive tasks are done. Just check yourself. What are you doing repetitively? Even Cisco Call Manager has BAT for automation of a basic import of user data.

Well "CLI is Dead" is a dramatic assertion, when looking into Ansible for automating networks, it appears that Ansible uses just another CLI (yes in files) and it seems that very often the way used to configure Cisco routers with the module "ios_command" uses Cisco CLI, in that way that is a bit ironic... It seems a more correct assertion would be "using only proprietary CLI is over", but CLI doesn't look as dead as claimed would it be only thanks to Ansible CLI itsself... Now it is true as well that Netconf could be used with ansible, bypassing Cisco proprietary CLI.
@davidbombal7 жыл бұрын
The Gartner report is interesting reading - this is their assertion based on their research which you can believe or not as you wish :) Ansible with NAPALM can leverage NETCONF and other APIs if the vendor supports it. Cisco legacy IOS is limited. However, that is not the future, especially in the data center and I wouldn't base the future on the weaknesses of legacy IOS. I have seen this happen already in my personal experience with VoIP / IP Telephony. The traditional telephony world was turned upside down. I believe the same will happen here. But, you need to decide for yourself what you believe is important.

A lot of folks do use RHEL for Linux networking, but David uses Ubuntu for the labs, since it's free, and simpler for folks new to Linux to work with. Technically, you could use Arch or whatever else you prefer, if you are already proficient with it, and either the packages are available, or you're comfy with building from the source (like Arch/Gentoo people already will be).

Depends on your job. Ask others in the GNS3 community what their experiences are: gns3.com/community

I am afraid there is no way around that! Buy the most powerful computer you can find (64bits, 16GB RAM minimum), get 2 two 24 inch monitor, make sure they have 5Gigapixel among themselves. Load GNS3, VMWARE, Virtualbox, QEMU, etc... Get Juniper Olive, Cisco IOSes, Alcatel virtual system, Palo Alto, F5 (they all provide virtual OSes now). Install Linux Servers in GNS4, add python, Ansible, c#, and play with those toys. That's so muvh fun that should be made illegal. Once again, there is no way around it, you might as we make it fun

I noticed you try to account for the dislikes on your video. Unless your ratio of likes and dislikes approaches 50%, you're wasting your time. Personally, I believe there are people roaming KZbin whose sole purpose is to add dislikes to otherwise reasonable videos. If you have a dislike ratio of 10%, i think you can assume everyone likes your video.

Marcus, the nice thing about learning Python is that it builds up and you never stop learning. Just get a book or watch Mr. Bombal, start with the ever popular "Hello World" program, grade averages and work your way up.
