The year was 1968, we were on recon in the steaming Mekong Delta, an overheated private removed his flak jacket revealing a t-shirt with an ironed on sporting the Mad slogan "up with mini skirts". Well we all had a good laugh, even though I didn't quite understand it, but our momentary lapse of concentration allowed Charlie to get the drop on us. I spent the next three years in a POW camp forced to subsist on a thin stew made of fish, vegetables, prawns, coconut milk and four kinds of rice. I came close to madness trying to find it here in the States but they just can't get the spices right!

I was an odd ball back then. My two brothers both served after being drafted so I enlisted after high school. I would have been drafted anyways so I figured why wait. I got two stories back then. My one brother served in the Corps and completed three tours. He always told me how it was so boring until the shooting started. He was leading patrols in the Me Cong delta. My other brother went Army. When I asked my other brother what it was like, he said all he did was cry. He lost all his childhood friends. He and his friends joined on what they called the "body system" where they went through boot camp together and then got sent over together. He was fixing helos at Da Nang when it go over ran during Tet. He miraculously got out. None of his friends made it. So, I went Air Force. I fought the cold war on F-111 flying pigs I called them. It's always strange listening to these old songs. It stirs up so much emotion that sometimes I still cry. I've never been to the wall. I don't think I could handle it seeing all those names. So now, I just stay home in a dark room waiting for the last sunset.

Phenomenal song! I was homeschooled and what they teach in textbooks about war is pathetically little. My Papa took over the history lessons. It was phenomenal. Stuff they’d never teach anywhere. As I grew older he told us more and more yet I know it’a a fraction of what he survived. It breaks my heart that those boys..men…were treated so terribly upon their return. I’m so proud to be the daughter and niece of 2 Marines, and the niece of both an Army MP and Navy SEAL who all served in Vietnam.

I spent my 20th birthday on Christmas Day 1970 as a door gunner on a UH-1 Huey going deep into Laos. A friend's Huey took a 51 caliber hit to the transmission and the aircraft commander got it onto the small landing pad on a remote radio-relay station on top of a mountain. They took out the M-60 machine guns and then pushed the helicopter off the mountain so my helicopter had room to land and pick them up. Their door gunner was covered in transmission oil, and he told me just as they touched down on the landing pad the transmission seized and the rotor blades ground to a halt. Were they ever happy to clamber on to our ship for the trip back to Kontum. I don't think I've ever told this story before. After the Army and College I became an airline mechanic, then an airline pilot, and also got my helicopter license. I'm now about to be a 73 year old retiree that lived through all that shit. Many did not. Welcome Home to all y'all that lived like me, and condolences to the families of those that did not.
