Rail Rolled Over and 5 Loaded Coal Cars Derailed Oh Fudge!

5 loaded coal cars derailed when the rail rolled over before the switch. Another
fine mess you got us in Ollie.
Will show you the 5 car derailment and go over why the rail rolled which is what
caused the cars to derail. Hulcher re railed the cars and at 5 AM the rail was
back in service so a train could run. Derailment happened at 6 PM the evening
before, so for the very few people available that is pretty darn good the track
got back in service that quick.
2nd Part: Fixing the track where the 5 cars derailed:
• Track Repairs are Made...
In a prior video I went over why some railroads use concrete ties and some use
wood ties. This derailment is a classic example of why we don't use concrete. Had
we had concrete ties in there they would have all been destroyed. Thus it would
have taken double or triple the amount of time to get the track back in service.

Oh man, the three day weekend blues. As a former public utility lineman I can testify to the number of three day weekends I didn't enjoy due to a call out for a drunk driver taking out a power pole. It never failed. I feel your pain brother!! At least over time I gained enough seniority to not be the first one dispatched. But you are the chief cook, bottle washer AND track maintenance man...things can pile up on you pretty easily. One thing is for certain. That you are responsible for the entire line and these disasters are not a regular occurrence is testimony to the incredible work you do. Hope you got home for at least a bit of the weekend. Next time I hoist a cold one with friends we will toast to you!!

As someone who worked for a flood control district, I can feel your pain. I've lost track of how many times a 3 or 4 day weekend was canceled due to rain. And as the person who was on-call, it wasn't unusual to get a wake up call at 0100 and need to go in due to some kind of problem. If it took more than an hour to fix, it wasn't even worth going home and back to bed as I had to be back at work anyways at 0600 as we were running 12 hour shifts. When you put in 3500 hours in a year, it wears you down. Bad thing, out of the original 4 FTE at the site, I'm the only survivor and was only the second youngest. All of us went out under a disability retirement. The good thing, all that OT counted towards that retirement payment.

I know the pain very well, get called out for a derailment when nothing has been done yet to remove the cars and locomotives, last derailment we had in 2020 occurred the night before Christmas Eve, I got to the site at 03:00 on Christmas Eve and waited nearly 6 hours for the clean up before we could do anything, Hulcher was busy dealing with another derailment that occurred up north and the company called two other contractors from Montana and we had to wait for them to arrive, it was a 16 hour day for us.

Hey, Dave. Sorry that the company took a hit with the 5 cars that derailed. When the side tractors and boons are quick to get there. There are good things that the company and workers did not get hurt on the job, plus the cars did not tip over, making the matter worse. I am going to be in PA Tuesday and leaving on Thursday. I can't wait to learn more about what caused the derailment. Just let you know that in July or August, I will be having another heart procedure. This will be my 7th procedure in a little over 4 years. Dave, you are a good guy who gives his knowledge to others. I hope we can meet sometime. Take care Dave. Robert

This is the incentive to pull the pin, old railroad term for taking pension. Never a dull moment, especially on a holiday weekend. Many a time I was called out on a holiday. Arlene, the crew caller would call crying and ask my wife if I would take the call. Wife looked at me and I said, double time and a half, deadhead, gas, and mileage plus the next working day off with the earnings of the assignment; darn tooting I'll take the call! Slapped some turkey and fixings in a tupper ware container and out the door I went. Always kept my grip in the car for fast action. Sorry to see this happen, the look on your face was enough explanation as to how you felt.

Not sure about your specific weather, but up here in SW Ontario we had the driest May since they started recording weather data. Our grass was brown, with some being a straw yellow-- and still is even after a week of off and on rain, marked by a few downpours. We all know how wood shrinks or expands depending on moisture content, I'm not surprised there were loose spikes, if that's what the cause was.

Thanks Edward, we have here an extreme amount of wear on our wheels. Factors: while only 16.8 miles of track there are 70 curves over 2/3 of those are high degree curves. Cars are always loaded at max weight. We have all jointed track, very hard on wheels. There is no rail grinding program here. Add in all that a whole lot of stress on the wheels. The wheel you questioned was close to being condemnable, I put my wheel gauge on it, but it was still in specs. Appreciate your writing in and watching my friend and very good observation on your part.

Greetings from Norway, good to hear nobody got hurt in this derailment. We also use wood-sleepers some places in Norway, although concrete is the most used. However, we don't fix the rails with spikes, we use wood-screws - spikes has not been used for several decades. Would it not be better to fasten the rails with screws rather than spikes?

Just started watching now at 04:00 if I can say one positive outlook is that it happened right next to the service road for a much easier clean up. Imagine if it was out in the woods or on a bridge! Counting those blessings! Wow!

Outstanding video as always! Your troubleshooting and thought process are very thorough. Being extremely experienced and detailed oriented helps in laying out the root cause of failure. Has a thought been given to using alternating spikes and rail clamps for a less flexible hold down? How many spikes in a row need to pull out to start the rail rollover? 5-10? Less?

Fudge is something they sell at Wisconsin Dells at the souvenir stand. They say bad things come in threes it seems like we're up to 4. Sadly another jostling on the already tired coal cars and now a major switch acting up. While one can be thankful there were no injuries and that it wasn't a big pile up it's scary to get a roadside horn salute from Hulcher.

Hope you were able to calm down without having your own derailment. Sometimes things just happen. Not seeing anything that points to anything you did or failed to do. Hate to say it but I am suspicious of those spikes.

if that switch is done via radio DTMF (phone keypad tones), someone in theory could have a cheap hand held radio and throw the switch themselves.

We had a problem with our SCADA system radios being interfered with. And as a taxing district which operated under the Army Corps of Engineers, nothing was allowed to be on our channels for over 750 miles. Well not legally anyways. So out came our radio vans to triangulate where the interference was coming from. Turned out it was a Federal government agency. They got a rather nasty cease and desist letter. Problem with radio systems is that you can get bounce that can have the signal travel thousand of miles so it might not even be intentional. We often listened in to a place over a 1000 miles away on a frequency that is close to what railroads operate on.

@@gravelydon7072 I'm a trucker. Well aware of skip. I do it all the time with my high end CB. XD But as for something like this, it'd have to be intentional if this was the cause. The way it works is you key your radio, then press a code on the keypad to activate the switch thats listening on the same freq. Someone could in theory even record the transmission and play it back. They use a repeater system at this location as well, so someone could be far off and still hit the switch radio. The only thing that "keeps" someone off the repeater is called tone squelch (CTCSS or DCS). Its either an analog or digital tone that the repeater listens for but doesnt replay on its transmission. If it doesnt hear it when someone keys on its freq, it wont repeat.

What you don't know about these electric switches is, they are programmed not to throw if a car is in the turnout. You can try on a radio to throw it or try on a push button on the switch pole, but it will not throw until the car is out of the loop. Rail rolled over because of loose spikes which pushed the point rail out far enough so the car then picked the switch. Appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and write in my friend.

2hours to rerail 5 cars! I'm jealous. It takes a minimum of 4 hours when we derail one of our LRV's. And we have the luxury of embedded rail and not working in ballast.

That happened when I worked as a locomotive crane helper. It looks like the switch was picked. I seen that happen. We had cranks in the switch box that would break that way the point would not bend and cause a gap in between the switch point and the rail. But in your case it's hard to tell.But sometimes they would bend before the crank would break. What a mess.Good luck on the repair

This solar powered switch is nothing like the ones you had. Those old switch stands ( we have some of them) are much different, yes they had gears and you had to adjust them with shims, pain but it can be done, sounds like a good future video on how to adjust a switch! @@ccrx6700 Thank you Dave. Those switches i used to throw are old school. And they still use those type on the Steelton and Highspire R.R. I replaced the cranks and shims in them from time to time. We always had a bar and extra cranks on the crane bed.

All the wheel flanges that I saw looked good. Guess the rail rolled before the switch got picked. Does that switch indicate "has been thrown" or just its position? Could it be indicating that direction because it got forced that way, or would it have to be actuated to indicate that direction? I'm used to manual switches with bow handles not this new-fangled stuff.

Yikes! And it happened right as you were leaving! It's interesting how a combination of factors like the missing spikes and a bit of extra heat can cause a derailment like that! Luckily it wasn't moving very fast at the time. Do you guys have to do more inspections or anything like that when it gets real hot?

I have a theory ... with the operator at the other end of the train I think the switch was picked and he kept shoving. Which in my mind is crazy if that's the case he should have known how much throttle it takes to make a move and if they where off thr rail he didn't pay attention...just my thought I could be wrong....won't be the first time lol

I understand that the engineer can only hear and feel so much. If his ammeter starts spiking, that says extra draw on the motors, and you might feel something. Other than that, you can't hear (or) feel much sitting on 3,000 hp of torque. That's how some drerailments go for miles before it gets noticed.

Operator was using remote box to control the train Someone Said Soemthing, there is no power gauge on that remote so he did not know until it was too late. Had he been in the loco then you are correct.

When my Lionel train does that, I just lift the cars up and give them a little shake and they go right back on. Pretty easy. 😊😂 Men like you don’t get paid for your labor as much as years of experience that is becoming irreplaceable. I will always hold flashlight’s for guys like that.

Those Helcher guys are no joke. I was a first responder on a collision in Michigan in 2001. We had been deconed by hazmat team after extricating the engineer. Those guys were pulling up with lowboys of crazy looking tracked machines already.

That was a very interesting video Dave. I am really interested in your railroad. I have been thinking about filming a couple of your trains over by the covered bridge. I am in Cass , West Virginia right now and supposed to be in Strasburg Pa. the following weekend. I’m trying to figure out if I can stop by over there on the way to Strasburg or on the way back. Coal trains have always been my favorite. I’m still in the planning stages but I sure would love to see a couple of your coal trains passing by 😊

Clicked on this because i just read a article of a train derailment close to where i work in the iron ore mines in the Pilbara, West Australia, a autonomous Rio Tinto train with around 220 full cars derailed near Karratha, big mess!
