I will post the next video showing why this derailment happened along
with a second video to follow of the damage the locomotive sustained, so watch those 2 upcoming videos to get your questions answered as to why this happened and how the locomotive fared, will in that latter video also share how Hulcher re railed the locomotive.
Will also be posting pictures of various stages of the event in the Community Room
on my channel so keep checking back to that tab or subscribe and click turn notifications
on and you'll get updates automatically. Here's link to my channel
/ @ccrx6700
I spliced 4 videos together I took that evening so you didn't have to wait and watch all
4 separately. Will also post all the videos of this on a playlist on my channel ccrx 6700. There will be like 7 more videos coming up about all of what went on including some on them putting the track back together.
No one was hurt or injured, only the company's pocketbook...LOL The derailment happened
on Wednesday April 21 about 5 PM. On that Saturday afternoon about 1 PM I tamped this and they ran
a train over it by 2:30 on slow order. Everyone involved in getting the rolling stock
re railed and the track back in service did a phenomenal job! They worked around
the clock with very long hours for everyone.
This occurred on the Cumberland Mine Railroad near Kirby Pa. on curve18 at mile post 4 with the train headed EB with loads. I will also
post several more videos about them putting the track back together. We had about
1400 feet of track torn out along with almost 700 cross ties destroyed.
Memory is serving me better now than in the videos, it has been since 1993 when we've had
this kind of main line destruction. We had several derailments back before then where
6 or 7 cars have come off and rolled over loaded and several derailments caused by
bad bearings, but this is the worst track tear up we have ever had. Several
of the contractors who came in said this is some of the worst rail destruction they had
ever seen.
I will give you a clue before my next video on why the derailment happened. If you have watched Thomas the Tank Engine, then you know that all the derailments in that show were
caused by the silly cars because they were angry! LOL But if there is any doubt we will
call Sir Topham Hatt and he will get to the bottom of this.
Here is the link to watch my theory on what caused the derailment:
• Why the Derailment at ...
Thank you so much for watching. Track is back in service and train is running at track speed, and in case you are wondering, it's 25 MPH track speed, the operator on the derailment was running at 22 MPH when this happened. He had followed standard operating procedures
for this section of track. The end of train DPU was in throttle run 3 when
this happened, the lead loco operator was just getting ready to go to idle on that
end of train unit when the train went into emergency. This is only the second time in it's history that our #1 locomotive has ever been derailed and it's been running this track since
1977! The company is also looking into having some track panels on hand to use in'
case this kind of problem should occur in the future. Having track panels available
would have probably saved a whole day in the reconstruction.

Before I comment, this is just an opinion, I'm not a railroad man. The rails that "appear" to be in front of that single locomotive are actually behind it. The reason being is that it appears to me that it was a "pusher" locomotive at the rear of the train. Once the rear cars started derailing it came uncoupled and when the air line broke it set the brakes into "emergency". The fact that it was a single locomotive and on the ground, it stopped quicker then the rest of the train because the few last cars that were derailed were still being pulled by the rest of the train. Hence the distance between the two. Also that same situation kept a pile up from happening because the derailed cars were on the ground and being pulled, not pushed. Was very fortunate the the derailed cars and locomotive stayed in the center of the road bed and didn't roll over.

To clean it up you need at least 48 hours. do you come there at least with cranes ran to the place??? As I see it, you can use the rails and the ties to be recycled. Good luck with the long shift. Hey brother, nice videos. I will say, the derailment didn't occur because the spikes started lifting up. Generally, 1 defect isn't going to cause a derailment but rather a combination of things will cause a derailment. Some things to consider: Were the ties really as good as you thought? I saw tie pieces all over and solid ties don't break off like that. There were rotten ties there. Also, just because a tie looks good, it doesn't mean it is. I've seen ties that look brand new be completely hollow inside. Was the gage good? Rail doesn't just roll like that, especially both rails. The gage spread because of wide gage or bad crossties and it was pushing out. Again, just because a tie might look good and appear to be solid, doesn't mean the spike holes aren't worn out especially in a curve. With worn out spike holes the gage will spread even though the rest of the tie is solid. What speed were they going? Is the speed correct for the degree of the curve? The unbalanced table in part 213 will help determine the maximum speed of a curve. Was there surface conditions? You tamped but did it hold in all places? The combination of gage, bad ties, push, surface conditions, speed all played a factor in this derailment. This is looking like track caused rather than train handling. Keep up the good video work. Thanks.

Good on-scene report with honest reactions to the pervasive damage. What I really don’t get is a full grasp of which way is which, which way the train was moving, etc. I have long understood your loaded trains go downgrade to interchange. Your opening scene showed the 2 grounded cars at the end of a string - rest of the cars are on rails. Ok. You then pan the other way to the derailed loco about 100 yards away - so we’re led to think that view musta been down grade towards the lead unit. You then walk down to the unit, filming clearly starts at the end facing the 2 cars (briefly seen in distance - ie, supposedly upgrade?). You then walk around the loco showing the trucks skewed etc - especially 2 wheels bracketing each side of the rolled rail. Nasty! Now it gets odd. You walk about 50-60 yards away from the unit, NOT the end facing the cars, showing the point on slight curve where the track damage started. How did the derailed cars get 100 yards downhill from the derailed unit? The only explanation is that the unit you went to was at the EOT, - it had to be a trailer, it was not in the lead. So last 2 cars at the trailing end of string plus the trailing loco went off the rails,. And the lead unit with all other loads stayed on the tracks (downgrade) - but you didn’t film that end. When the last 2 cars and trailer unit went on the ground, - the air line separated when the trailing unit let go of the final car. The trailing unit ground to a halt much sooner than the rest of the train. Make sense? I think in your excitement & shock over the damage, you just forgot to orient us fully to the scene, which is understandable! Still love ya. I hope nobody makes fun of you for not expressing your enthusiasm for railroading today. We know you’ll bounce back as this cleanup progresses. Keep the cam on the cleanup action as much as you can. I would guess your RR’s investigators were not yet fully on scene to take photos, measurements, etc yet - hence that’s why the unit was still idling while on the ground (someone asked this elsewhere in comments). Nobody is probably allowed to touch or change any controls once the craziness stops and everybody is certified as ok. Do your locos have black box recorders? Will there likely be internal or FRA/STB hearings? Best of luck in the recovery of service.

I grew up between Kennesaw and Acworth, GA. The Tracks (The Old L&N Line) were about 1000 yards behind my house. I was 8 to 12 years old. Around 1968 to 1972 there were no less than 4 Coal Trains derailed and smashed cars and spilled Coal EVERYWHERE!! One derailment happened when I was in our garden with a clear view to the tracks. I heard a horrible noise coming from the tracks and coal cars were falling off on their sides, running on top of each other, black coal dust was everywhere. It seems like it took forever for the thing to stop!!! The most amazing sound of screeching, crunching metal I've ever heard. I'm 62 now and I'll never forget those days... Amazing... BTW - that's the same line that The Great Locomotive Chase took place on during the Civil War. Kennesaw still has the old steam Locomotive "The General" in the Railway Museum in Kennesaw, GA.

Really fortunate that the train stayed upright! But a large mess indeed. Do spikes hold just as well as other fasteners? Here in The Netherlands, pretty much all is screwed (where wooden ties are used) with some kind of elastic fastening. I've never seen just spikes. Though I don't know what the reason for that is. Is there even a large sideways force on the rail under normal operation?
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is Marco, coulda been lot worse if loco was on side and fuel spilling out, we lucky it stayed up right. Thanks for watching sir
@jasonking2943
@jasonking2943 3 жыл бұрын
Here is my guess, given the curve and the way the track is rolled out. I believe a boggie locked. Thus the wheel set on the hopper would not turn and follow the rail. For the rail to lift like it did you had to have a force to cause that and a locked wheel set would could and has done that. Major forces happen when a train goes into a curve. when Dave showed the spikes lifted to start off with that proves some inside force caused that. Had speed been a factor which in theory it could have been not that they were going to fast or over the speed for that part of the line. I think if they were going over the speed things would have been alot worse. The fact that the locomotive and hoppers were all upright tells me speed was not a factor.

I had one of these where the rails rolled over at the uphill end of a siding while we were pulling a string of hoppers full of sand out of there and we had to leave one loaded hopper on the ground below the switch. We may have had more than that car off the track, but we didn't see it at first and the other cars may have been rerailed by the guard rails below the switch frog. The Roadmaster came out and the section gang got everything repaired in a couple of days while we were working on the other side of the mountains. Those ties were old and had been stressed by another crew backing the loads into the siding after one of their units failed on them and they didn't have enough power to get up the hill. They left half of the train there and we were sent out to pick it up the next afternoon. When I was still doing track work, my crew had replaced ties at the lower end of that siding, but when I went to train crew, the priorities got changed and the rest of the siding didn't get taken care of. Sometimes track fails because of something that the engineer does. Sometimes things get worn out and need attention, but something else is more important and you don't get back to it in time.

Well, figure this, my old tamper has limit switches which control how far down the tamping tools go. Wood ties 7 inches thick concrete 9. That would mean to tamp a combo of wood and concrete, for every difference I would have to crawl under tamper and reset 4 limit switches, then do it again for each different tie and that ain't gonna happen. Now if I had the Jupiter system in the tamper I could toggle a switch inside the cab, but Jupiter upgrade costs minimum $100,000, so management not yet ready to give me an upgrade or a newer tamper, so we stuck with wood for now. Looks to me, based on how the spikes are gradually being pulled out, before the derail, the DPU, was pushing harder than the lead engine(s), were pulling, causing the DPU to push hard enough, on the curve, to put enough outward pressure on the cars and their trucks to cause the rail to come loose and roll.

Okay so the locomotive that is on the ground was the DPU on the back-end? That is the bad thing about running a headless unit as there are no eyes to see what is going on and stop the train. Then again based on the last video I just watched the empties headed back, those train drivers fly through there which is probably why the distance between the disconnected cars and loco.

Did the derailment start at the end of the curve as you transition from super elevation back to level track? Maybe a wheel flange rode over the top of the rail in the transition area and the rail got caught between two wheel sets of a truck assembly. That would explain why the rail is laid over like that, why the train stayed upright within the roadbed, and why so many ties are cut. Once a car or locomotive truck was on the ground those wheel flanges will cut through the ties plus any dragging equipment. Sorry it happened but a great amount of content potential at least. Glad no one was hurt. How remote is that area to get equipment into?

as the saying goes. you cant put a square peg in a round hole, "well" the railways have proven you can. as a former railway track maintenance worker I've seen time and again the square spikes (dog spikes) we call them here in Australia, are always the first to come lose no matter how good the sleeper ties are. I can easily say if you walk along that section of track you would probably find that most of if not nearly all of the square spikes would be compromised (lose) or well on there way before any of the round type dog spikes. being on a curve you may notice smooth shiny marks on the sleepers on the outer high rail from the lateral movement of the sleeper plate moving back & forward on the sleepers from the forces of the trains weight pushing on the high rail thus loose ties. but that being said I'm not in any position to say how it came off the tracks, nor am I going to. thanks for the video although its not what you wanted to see or happen, take care. greetings from Australia.

Very interesting, thank you for making this. So much damage from a point of failure, where it looks like a few base plates gave way, and once the rail moved out of gauge, weight and motion did the rest. Would it be possible to use a different method of seating the rails on sharper curves, such as the fast clips or Pandrols on concrete ties used a lot in Europe? The camber will have been correctly worked out for the curve and line speed, so rail fixings and ties seem to hold the answer. Re railing the train must have been nightmare!

It’s the end of the train not the beginning they have a pushing locomotive and a pulling locomotive and with the amount of weight that needs to stop remember an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon equal or opposite reaction so it didn’t hit a steel wall for it to of stoped instantly
@Tolono
@Tolono 3 жыл бұрын
Here's the way I see it, which could be incorrect since I wasn't there: The engine you see was at the rear of the train acting as a DPU (Distributed Power Unit, controlled from the lead engine). The last few cars of the train somehow derailed on the curve, uncoupling from the DPU in the process. The brake line between the DPU and the last car disconnected, putting the train in emergency (air line pressure to zero) so the brakes on the DPU and the rear cars came on with full force. The DPU stopped very quickly, at least partly from being off the rails. The air in the brake line near the front of the train takes a few seconds to vent out the break at the rear, so the rear of the train was dragged along for a few seconds tearing up the track as the front part of the train didn't have the brakes on yet.

Wow bet you sure could tell a lot of stories to top this one sir! You guys are the best. Unless you've been out there, no one knows what you guys have to deal with, like you say with weather, and long, long hours, working on slopes that are nuts, let alone getting everything back in order. My hat is off to you sir. Thanks for watching and hope you will stay tuned for the rest of the upcoming videos about all of the events that happened here.

Was the train going backwards. How is the locomotive so far from the cars. 25 miles an hour running on gravel. I would think it would have stopped pretty quickly and train went into emergency!!!!

If that was Penn Central, it would be their best mainline track...

LOL, what a tragedy PC became, I am ashamed of how the once mighty PRR and NYC with their magnificent railroadin ended up. Once 70 mph track was slow order down to 10. Thanks for watching Steven and hope you will watch the upcoming videos that explain so many other aspects of what all happened here, there gonna be 8 more videos out about the derailment coming soon to a utube nearest you...

Lori, thanks for writing in and watching, they got some really great people out here and a lot of equipment in a short time. Everyone involved did a phenomenal job, Track was out of service on a Wedneday at 5 PM and the first train ran at 2;30 on that Saturday. THope you will stay tuned for the rest of the upcoming videos about all of the events that happened here.

just curious why the locomotive was left running when its off the tracks?
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 3 жыл бұрын
Locos are left running a lot of the time here, they never shut down during the winter even if parked in a siding, Had there been any leakage under the loco then it surely would have been shut off right away. And, consider if the loco was shut off and for some reason wouldn't start again, that would severely complicate things for the track repair crews. We have no way to drag it west out of the way. They were also hoping Hulcher could somehow re rail the loco quickly so no need to shut it off. Thanks for watching and hope you will stay tuned for the rest of the upcoming videos about all of the events that happened here.

You are certainly right in that Robert, holding track surface is so important to prevent hunting, it ain't good for the cars either as you well know. Appreciate your watching sir

NS sure does have their share of problems, no arguing about that Vincent. It is rare we ever have a derailment here, the last big one was in April of 2021 and before that it was many, many years. Very much appreciate your taking the time to pay us a visit and check out the video my friend.

I guess when in doubt just throttle on out. Or until it quits moving.... how can you even operate a train and not feel that

With only 3 trucksets off and being dragged the drop in amps on loco will be almost minimal. They once had a bearing go bad and 1 wheel set dropped off, they drug it 8 miles with no drop in amps. These locos are built to handle 70 or so loads dependingbon grade, we only have 37 cars, so a car or 2 off doesnt drop amps much. Train stopped when it went into emergency after rear DP uncoupled
