That depends on the tornado. EF4s and 5s can turn a school into a junkyard. Just look up "Moore Tornado School" on google for some visual examples.

Every school has a different safe spot. For instance, my elementary school's and Middle School's were the hallways, whereas my high school had a basement. I'm assuming their safe spot was NOT in the hallway here. Lol

This needs to be included in educational videos to explain 'this is why we go to the hallways during a tornado'... That perfectly demonstrated just how effective it is... Back when I was a kid, I never thought that it would matter if we were in the halls or not.. because a tornado would just decimate us either way. Tbh, they figured out that some of those F5's can turn the hallways into wind tunnels. I forget which school, but it took a direct hit. Several students were k1lled because a vending machine got sucked down the hallway.😬 ...I imagine it depends on construction, too.

Actually hallways are one of the least safe places to be. The narrow hallways create a wind tunnel that increases wind speeds. Think of taking cover under an overpass, seems safer but the air moves faster and is therefore more dangerous. You should aim for an interior room with no windows. Unfortunately many schools were built when we still believed that hallways were safe, so for some it's the only place to go.

I do Gov't contract work in the Red States. This is default level neglect for the red states. My company has over a decade of documentation proving this. We maintain those records so they can't pass the blame. But the people don't care about subpar conditions as long as they get their inequality fix. So ultimately we just cover our interests as a business.

@@blackhole9961 I've seen concrete alone, not reinforced hold up to a cat 4 and up to in tornados what you would a f-3/4. the re-inforced shell and roof would secure up to a cat 5 hurrican or f5. Id still argue in favor of the concrete. maybe not in miss but in general ive seen well built concrete structures mock tornadoes and hurricanes.

@@tironen And Concrete has been ripped to shreds by EF4 tornadoes. a very notable and recent example what the Mayfield Kentucky EF4 tornado did across its path of destruction. Another example would be a Walmart sliced in half in the tornado outbreak of 1993. Thats not even to mention the immense drop in pressure would essentially explode a building from the inside out should it be in its direct path. Then you have to factor debris which would be slammed into a building like missiles compromising the structural integrity. Also Tornadoes ARE NOT Hurricanes. hurricanes are far less intense, they just do damage over a wider area in comparison than tornadoes.

Most schools We see get hit they usually have deadly objects flying down the halls. This most likely missed a direct hit or this is a stronger building. The majority of schools don’t do very well. I remember one a coke machine shot down the hall way at 70-100+ mph. Had kids been there it would’ve been bad the halls act like a wind tunnel usually. Then enterprise comes to mind.

Sand tornadoes are not at all equivalent to the tornadoes that form during a supercell storm. Sand tornadoes are much weaker and are usually caused by column of air rising during sunny conditions, which then starts to swirl around. A supercell tornado, on the other hand, is formed when two large airmasses collide violently, which much more energy involved. Worst case for a sand tornado is about 60 mph. Buildings in Dubai are built to withstand at least 120 mph. The tornado that hit Mississippi has tentatively been categorized as EF4, which would put the winds in the 166-200 mph range.

Im assuming you've never experienced your school and town being hit by a tornado, but I have met with kids and families in these situation and I gurantee you the last thing those kids care about is Spring Break! 🙄 These poor kids that were affected will suffer for the rest of their lives with PTSD if they were anywhere near where that tornado went through.
