Thanks for the review. I've been shopping around for a distributor for a bit now and CD Baby has been in the top 3 for me along with DistroKid and SoundDistro, but I think I'm going to go with CD Baby because of the pricing and the fact that they have a stake in my success. If I'm not making money they're not making money. Not to mention the HQ is local to me... as in less than a 5 min drive from my driveway. So if there is a customer service issue that can't be handled over the phone (due to it being automated) I can literally start knocking on their door...lol Great video and insight.

It's honestly a very subjective thing. CD Baby and Tunecore are equal, what separates the companies are the models. Would you rather sacrifice 9% of revenue vs. paying $50 annually? Are you ok with the possibility of having your music removed if you fail to pay $50 annually vs. having it in stores forever? 9% of $10K would be $900 vs. $50 from Tunecore. Basically, it's not a simple question to answer.

With the system they have, it doesn't matter if they do because the releases would be paid for. If an unlimited distributor changes its pricing, you HAVE to pay the new pricing to keep the old stuff in stores. If CD Baby changed its pricing and you didn't like it, you'd simply use another distributor for your new releases. It's not a trap.

@@chibuezedikesongs I've been researching various distributors recently. I looked into Distrokid because so many people say they're great. They nickel and dime you from what I can tell. Like, every distributor has "add ons", but Distrokid is just the worst when it comes to upselling. That, and if your yearly subscription lapses, they'll take your music down unless you pay a $30 legacy fee PER release! Right now, I'm weighing my options between LANDR, CDBaby, Emubands, and Octiive, as none of them will take down your music for a lapsed subscription.

Their Content ID programs will only police releases that you distributed through them. You're good if it's not the same release.

I kid you not, artists say this about every distributor. Generally, it's when they have a problem that actually requires customer service and not something that can be read off a script. It's not just distribution though, I think it's tech in general. Apple customer service used to be great. I reached out about an Apple Pencil issue, the rep was a clueless virtual assistant which, for the money they charge for Apple devices really threw me. With Google it's the same thing. I only know of one distributor that has great customer service and it's human reps that mainly live in LA. They charge like $500 annually though.

So, the issue is the idea that I’m getting paid? This is the stuff that agitates me. One, it’s not an affiliate link, Cd Baby doesn’t have an affiliate program. They asked me to cover an announcement of a new feature a year ago & in exchange I asked for a discount for my viewers. So when you click the link to join Cd Baby I get nothing. Does that change the information? does that make the statements any more true or untrue? You’re effectively calling my integrity into question and I don’t appreciate that. Nothing on this channel supports the idea that I mislead viewers in anyway. I have a Distrokid affiliate link & they’ve consistently gotten bad reviews from me. All the research I do, that nobody pays for, don’t bother to donate, nothing but concerned about if I make a dollar from giving a company press. If I got paid by a company that sells blue shirts to say their shirts were blue, would you, looking at the blue shirt not be able to trust the information, despite what you can see with your own eyes?

@@Payusnomind Thanks for the detailed response. If your cdbaby link is not an affiliate link then that is much better, yes. Although the viewer has every reason to assume it is, the disclaimer in your description under all the links says "Links in the description are typically affiliate links". But if the cdbaby one isn't then I'm happy to retract my comment about there being "no point" to this particular video. I don't mean to challenge your integrity, I don't know you. From my perspective you might have a lot of integrity or you might have very little. But if you do have an affiliate link for a product or service you are reviewing, all I have is one good reason not to trust you. Regarding your example about the blue shirts, this is a perfect way to highlight the fact that the reason myself and others look on yt for reviews on products and services isn't only to learn basic information (Like what colour they are). If I only wanted basic information I could just go on the company's website. I go to yt to learn basics plus any info they have left out due to obvious financial incentives. So it sucks to click a yt video only to see a link in the description and therefore a similar financial incentive. It's a blatant conflict of interest and a problem that's clearly widespread among influencers. In my efforts to learn about different distributors, I clicked on and off of so many different videos trying and failing to find ones without links in the description. Surely you can understand my annoyance. I understand that you put effort into your videos and need to make a living. But it looks like you have several streams of revenue beyond affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing really is such a plague in my view and it's very sad as a consumer and viewer when it seems almost impossible to escape.
