Great tour of a store I need to put on my bucket list. I would have snatched the Taking Liberties CD if you hadn't. Yes, my nose hairs would have been singed too but I take comfort in knowing that you are the best Beatle channel! A fun episode. Thanks!
@StephenSchnee11 ай бұрын
Thanks Andy. Haha. The best Beatles channel. As you may or may not know, the Beatles ARE my favorite band but get little coverage on my channel cuz they are talked about everywhere else. I don't know why I thought it was humorous to say I was the 'best Beatles channel' but at least it makes people chuckle! And now I have a spare Taking Liberties with faded spine.... Here's a funny thing: I bought the new TL CD to replace the one with the faded spine but the 'best of EC and the attractions' CD's spine is so faded, it is pure white! I didn't notice that until I was putting the CDs away!!!

My hands burning in the vinyl sections...lol. You got a lot more than I thought and many I don't have. I would like to visit there if ever in the neighborhood. It looked like a great day out. Now to look forward to all the great music to come in 2024...take care

funny enough i’m posting a video from a recent visit to that Amoeba later this week. first time at the new location. miss the parking garage underneath but still awesome. glad they didn’t just close up the shop for good. i got that great 2 CD Paul Kelly album. Actually bought it in Australia. Kind of a blind buy all i knew was Dumb Things. Thats a cool version of the Slits album. I just discovered The Saints earlier this year. Not sure how they slipped by me all these years. cool pickups.

I'll keep an eye out for that video, Steve. And The Saints' early years are their finest, although there's so much in their catalog to love!

It's "What's In My Bag?" with Stephen Schnee! It's nice to see a record store with people inside it! People still want physical product! All good! Aaaaahhhh … thanks for the retrospective, Steve. On my work trips to LA back in the day I would always fit in a visit to the original Amoeba store. A music lovers heaven! I could, and did, spend hours there. The new store is still pretty sizable. Muddy boobies!

Yeah, I was glad to finally get that Strummer box! And yes, Wally. If you ever come to the West Coast, Amoeba in San Fran and Hollywood are essential. The Berkeley store is great, too, but smaller.

Big specialist record stores like Amoeba have all but disappeared here in Australia. We have a big national chain who do an OK job but sell heaps of non musical stuff as well-phones, cd players and turntables. coffee machines and even fridges. When the chain has what I want (eg box sets from McCartney, Beatles, Dylan etc) it's usually prohibitively expensive and much cheaper online from Amazon, E-bay and the like. There are small shops still around but these can be hard to find and often don't carry a lot of what you want. Loved the video.
@StephenSchnee11 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for taking the time! Oh, boy, how I'd love to visit ANY sized store in Australia and go through the used bins! There's still a few Aussie only CDs I need from Mondo Rock, Australian Crawl, and a few other artists!

I have Dark Continent as part of a double with Call Of The West. The A&M reissue is pretty hard to find as it was deleted so long ago. Love their version of Ring Of Fire on index masters. I wonder if the chain is named after The Adolescents song 🤔.

Yes, I'd like that WoV CD or the one with Dark Continent on its own. It can be had online but is usually out of my price range!

I just picked up the same Gary Myrick album at my local record stores 3 FOR THE PRICE OF TWO sale! Score with WALL OF VOODOO! Fun video Schnee! You’re the best at what you do! Curious what you think of the RED & BLUE CDs
@StephenSchnee11 ай бұрын
Seriously, I NEVER knew this came out on CD until yesterday (when I made the video)! And thank you very much for your support and kind words. I've listened to the RED & BLUE and I'm neither elated or disappointed. Some of the songs sound a bit odd to me (She Loves You and I Am The Walrus in particular) but the great thing is we have the original mixes in our collections already so it doesn't ruin the songs for me - in fact, it is 'interesting' to listen to - but I'll stick with original mixes if I'm going to listen to these songs in the future. I do like the fact that they exist, though. If I hated 'em, I'd have to be honest about it... but I don't hate 'em at all!

Thanks Morris. The great thing about Amoeba is that they don't always have everything you're looking for, but they always have just enough to keep you coming back for more. I never quite 'got' Lauryn Hill. That doesn't mean she didn't deserve her fame, but I sometimes wonder if she was way more popular in her own house than she was in the real world. But heck, I'm the most popular guy in my place, and I don't even like me!

@@StephenSchnee I think she had a good voice and the one song "Doo Wop (That Thing)" that got attention was good, and I like a few Fugees song....actually liked their first album when it came out, and no one cared, But their cover of "Killing Me Softly" and "Fu-Gee-La" were both really annoying. She was very cute, though.

You’ve had a good run if the “condition slip”-ed CDs you’ve bought there in the past have not been so bad. Little known fact: there’s also a pricing tier between “max” & “condition slip” called dollar down. It’s unlabeled & just a buck off the “max” price if there’s a slight imperfection.
@StephenSchnee11 ай бұрын
Yeah, I've had a great run (so far) so this one disc was kind of a surprise. But I'll invest in a CD buffer when I can afford it ($50 or so). Talk to yooz later today!
@yournamehere600211 ай бұрын
You should get a CD resurfacer. I'm pretty meticulous about my CDs, I never touch the underside and always put discs in jewel cases if they originally came in cardboard sleeves. But if I buy something used that's scratched, it's only because it's rare or out of print. Resurfacer is good for that. Electric one, not the hand crank.
