Just look for some anti-nausea antihistamines like dramamine equivalent stuff. Some ferries have them in the stores. Also facing the direction it is going in as much as possible helps. If you do lie down, try avoiding getting up or you will feel worse soon after
@heuhen

If I am not wrong, there is usually a button next to the entrance door, that silence the tannoy in the room. And if you are prong to getting sea/motion sickness, go to your local drug store and get motion sickness medicine. What you eat and drink do also help a bit.

You guys had possibly the worst location for your room for someone with seasickness. The bow of the ship moves the most as it goes up and over the waves so Chris might have had a better time if you were at the stern. Learnt that the hard way on a terrible ferry crossing in New Zealand

weird they'd put the most expensive rooms there then
@KhronicD
@KhronicD 2 жыл бұрын
@@dma93-ch Best view. And the easiest place the put a larger suite/room. It's easy to segment the middle part of a ship into rooms, but as you go more towards the prow, the engineering gets harder. So it's easier to just make the prow cabin the "special" room.
@dma93-ch
@dma93-ch 2 жыл бұрын
@@KhronicD Thanks for the explanation, that's interesting. That being said though, why charge premium+++ if they take the easiest route for them and the less comfortable one for the customers :C

@@dma93-ch I assume that generally the assumption is that the guests who book these suites, won't have seasickness and generally book them for the luxury aspect rather than the practicality of it. Someone without seasickness probably wouldn't mind the rocking since they're in a good room and have all the space they'd want.

@Stacey Jones I wasn’t as dumb (SORRY nothing personal) as you. I read, before going, how bad that passage was. So I flew from Auk to Chch. However, also in 1977 I took the overnight ferry from Swansea, Wales to Cork, Ireland. BTW, the stern moves JUST as much as the bow. Stay in the middle of the boat.

it is not that hard to be immune if you take the propper anti-hangover preparations before drinking, eat well and a handfull of peanuts before drinking will make it harder for you to get drunk with the added benefit of the hangover being cosiderable weaker so you can tank it on the morning without meds, over time you can just tank the hangovers with the resistances you have built, then procede to drink coffe and laugh on the weak while they suffer on bed

@hedera1332
@hedera1332 Жыл бұрын
Sea sickness/motion sickness is caused when the fluid in your ears (which helps you maintain your balance) is telling you that you're moving, but your eyes are pretty much telling you that you are not. These mixed signals essentially confuse your brain and make you feel sick (this can also be why reading in the car makes some people sick). This is why going out on deck and watching as the boat rides the waves can sometimes help you feel better as it can re-align what your senses are telling you.

Connor, thank you (AND CURSE YOU) for giving me all of the Japan nostalgia. All of it. I lived on an American military base in Aomori prefecture from 1989 to 1999 (age 6 to 16) and totally took the experience for granted. You probably won't see this message, WHICH IS FINE, but I do have a recommendation for you! This coming February, if you have the time and money, you should definitely go visit Sapporo for the snow festival! Sapporo is also known for its beer and its ramen, HINT HINT! Cheers from the deep south of the US, and I can't ask you to have a beer in my honor because I don't drink, but if you can get your hands on a Mutsu or the amazeballs Sekai Ichi apple, CHOW DOWN or whatever!

after spending 5 years living in japan myself and travelling around, the thing with pretty much ALL OF JAPAN is that because of a huge boom in the 80's and then burst of the bubble in the 90s everything in japan is so DATED. like they usually do a good job of maintaining things so they CAN keep using these things well into today but it's so rare to see like really MODERN interior, architecture hotels and such unless you go to tokyo and I will say that because of 2020 Olympics they have done a good effort to freshen up tokyo, but yeah everything feels like it was futuristic and high tech in the 80s and 90s and now because it was advanced its still good today but also so dated. atms, ticket machines (tho these too have been updated for the olympics) when i first went to japan in 2008 everything was still so dated. especially i noticed this when i visited okinawa, everything, the airport, the busses the shops the hotels the attractions all feel so 80's 90's but just so tired. it's really a weird nostalgic feeling that in a way i dont hate. like this boat it really takes you back to CLEARLY the 90's -00's and the nostalgia in me is really fascinated with it. anyways sorry for the long ramble, thanks for the fun video!

After I woke up and got something to eat I walked past all the cleaning staff removing the leftovers of the people who were awake and sick.

I rode a similar ferry in 1998. I was in college with my friends and we were in the communal sleeping area. It was a cheap way to travel but also a great way to socialize and hang out with friends. Back then there was no bullet train to Hokkaido. The bath on board was memorable. Something kind of weird about watching the bathtub water sloshing about as the whole boat rocked over the waves.

Paid once 800€ (900$ US) for captains cabin on Fjord Line. Was dead centre of the ship with a window forward atop the bridge, which was nice. But holy cow the room size wasn't even one fourth of that Japanese cabin here. Basically the entire cabin was the size of the bedroom. The reason we took the captains cabin was the private shower and toilet. But again the size difference: The Fjord Lines bathroom was very "economical". I would guess it at 5m² and that is probably generous. So honestly 1k$ for that is rather cheap compared to Europe. Then gain overall for 15h trip it is a waste of money.

Here in sweden you get a private shower and toilet in the standard rooms and they are like 30-50€. Way more modernized then this one too. Maybe a bit late.. But I'm a person living by Norway's cost, I struggle with seasickness, but I still love taking these kinds of boats(called Hurtigruten in Norway)! I have some advice for people struggling with seasickness: -Do NOT eat sweets. Food that easily make you nauseous on land is naturally something you should avoid or limit eating at seas. -Eat something SALTY like potato chips or salted nuts, it helps if you are just a bit sick and hungry. -if you feel very sick, Do not eat and lay down if possible. -If the boat is rocking a lot, go down to a lower level of the boat. Do not sit alle the way upfront(front row?) or at the back of the boat.There will be less movement in the middle of the boat. Less movment =Less nauseous -Shops in these kinds of boats often sell medicine for seasickness. If you buy it PLEASE read instructions carefully before use! Remember all medicine can have unwanted sideeffekts. Like Connor said, I also love sleeping in boats because it feels like you are being cradled like a baby. Other things I love with boat rides is the really fresh air outside, beautiful scenery, and if I have my own room: It much more comfortable for me an introvert to travel like this. if you get internet access and PC, it's quite cozy in there xD (My hometown don't have trains, so I can't compare it to that.)

I'd definitely have a full on bubble bath, that's a soaker tub. My parents have one in their basement. Also I had to got up to Ottawa for work during the winter and the only train tickets left were the Business class ones. They didn't think they'd need me and then the event was way busier than originally planned for. My work did pay for my ticket thankfully because I was fine leaving in a pinch. Highly recommend it, I had free snacks and a glass of wine plus I scheduled it so I'd have dinner too. It was actually 2 trains and I switched to the second train in Toronto. I'd definitely do it again, scenery was gorgeous; food was amazing and wifi was steady. I've been trying to plan a trip with my mom to Montreal for next year.

Been following Solo Travel Japan and Kuga's travel channel, where they frequently tried various ferries. Japanese ferries are amazing, the food though... The thing is, Sapporo is not yet connected by bullet train, it stops at Hakodate, and continue with regular JR Hokkaido train, which is pretty slow. The undersea Seikan tunnel is also shared track with freight train, so the fastest E5/H5 shinkansen trains is limited all the way down to 130-160 kph while crossing the tunnel. Chris getting easily seasick is so much for British quest to rule the waves.

Few things about boats, 1, the place you get the least seasick is around water level mid ship as it moves the least the further you get from that point the worse it gets depending on the sea state obviously, 2, Unfortunately you wouldn't experience this on a 14hour ferry but usually after 3-5 days at sea you get "sea leg's" in which you will start unconsciously moving with the boat which helps w/ sea sickness, in other words your body starts to rock counter to the boat, 3, going outside and seeing the horizion is great for helping with sea sickness as it gives your brain an external reference which helps with training your body like mentioned in point 2. t.
