CDL Test, Class A 2024. "Parallel Park Conventional"

Parallel park Conventional, The first of the advanced maneuvers. Remember during the CDL test you'll only do ONE of the advanced maneuvers, you'll do either PP Conventional, PP Sight side, 90 Degree Alley dock. It's a random selection made by the examiner. Before you do this you've already performed the straight line and one of the offsets.
You're allowed two free pull ups, you can take as many as you need up to a point. Pull ups are the least amount of points "1 point after the two free" so do them to gain a better position. The G.O.A.L. is limited to only Two. You cannot take a third look.
Encroachments are 2 points for any part of the vehicle that crosses or touches a boundary line. On a Class A vehicle both vehicles, tractor and trailer are scored separately. You could have part of the tractor and part of the trailer encroached and that would equal 4 points. You cannot finish an exercise encroached. You shouldn't finish outside a boundary line for your final position. The final position has to be adhered inside the boundary or there will be a 13 point penalty just for that and you'll fail. You'll be allowed up to 12 points total for a pass. The 13th point is a FAIL. It's required that you exit the vehicle using three points of contact at all times. Failing to do this properly could result in a automatic failure for an unsafe act. Leave a comment please.

@Mike Logan, I was struggling with my parallel parking and my test was 2 days away. I hadn't found consistency in my directional changes. I went back to your video and decided to use your system exactly. I wanted to practice like I was at the test, so I used a get out and look mid-maneuver like you did; it enabled me to assess if I was right on, too deep, or needed to go further in. Actually being in back of the truck enabled me to really visualize what needed to happen and when. Presto!! I was consistent in the final placement and confidently performed the maneuver at my test. Parallel parking would have been the only thing to hold me back, but thanks to you and your video, I'm now a CDL holder.

Try to find a truck driving school that is independent from companies. This will allow you to choose who you want to work with who has a training program. Doing it this way gives you more freedom. Really take your time in the beginning and stay focused and don’t get yourself into something that you’re not sure about. You need a clean record for the first year. I'd say to do it! My advise is to contact a trucking company that doesn't have their own truck driving school. You'll have a employment commitment contract that requires you to work for a said amount of time to pay for the school. You want a company that does have a program for entry level drivers and ask about their requirements to get a position as an entry level driver. If it seems like a good fit then go for it. Taking my test again on 7/14/23 at 8 a.m. I passed the Pre-trip & Air brake, straight backing but i failed the parallel parking now they want me to do blindside parallel parking which is this maneuver....i practiced 2 straight days with another class at my school I'm feeling Confident i will nail it!!! Phillip, You can do this, Take it one step at a time. If you notice in my video I don't talk about anything except what you're supposed to do for each step. The next statement is Very Important! Once the trailer axles are in the correct position, parallel park the truck just like you would park your personal vehicle. I promise the maneuver will work this way. I do watch the back of the trailer because you don't want to go too far back. Focus on where all the tires are in relation to the boundaries. Good Luck!

Hi Mike, the practice pad that my school uses doesn’t have any lines. It’s a gravel pad. What are you looking for on the landing gear cross members to help you gauge the angle/how deep you want to go to make sure when you turn left you are straight in the box? Thank you for your help.

Look at the center of the landing gear, the part that looks like a K on it's side. The two angles come together in the middle. Aim there and as soon as you get that then straighten up so the truck is in line with the trailer. Good news, this manuver will no longer be required in the future to pass the test. They may still require you to learn this for your schools behind the wheel section. Schools and companies are making this change right now. I'll have an update video soon.

Manny, try to relax and take your time. If there are time constraints the examiner will let you know. Where I test there are not any time constraints. I've seen several students get in a hurry and then blow it. good luck!

Where I am testing, the DMV test lot is gravel. No visible box entry line to see. Only rear, front and side cones.

You’re at a little bit of a disadvantage. It would be much better on pavement with Definitive lines.

If the testing site has cones, you can use those as reference. We have been practicing on a gravel lot and I have been using the cones. It really has helped.

Yeah, determining if you should turn left or right can be problematic and confusing at first. It was for me. I think the other problem is getting the tractor at the 45-degree angle to the trailer on your first hard left turn. I like how this video mentions you are simply just trying to systematically get each 3 set of axles into the space. This is the fastest and simplest explanation video I have found on the reverse offset maneuver!

I take my test on Friday this week, I usually put the cone just by my last axle or in between the last axle and the mudflap. I go hard right at that point all the way and I don’t go left until I see the V bar part of the landing gear, and then I go left, when I see the tractor tire cross into the line(Keep in mind I’m using a single Axel day cab to take my test) when I see my tandems and the trailer straight hopefully my tires are in the box then I go hard right to straighten up, is that a good tactic to use for that tractor? Also I will have a 45 foot trailer coupled to it

At the part 1:19, video kinda faded out. I wanted to see where at the rear of trailer does it stop at cones. Is it at mud flaps or at the end of trailer?

End of trailer. You have to take the entire trailer past the cones in order to start backing. I did but didn't go very far at all past the cones.

I experimented on the initial set-up. I made sure that my trailer single axle tire is staged on the inside of my tire (closest to the tractor) with the cone and then I would proceed with my maneuver - that indicates that I won't clip/hit the cone

The camera was focused on the parts of the vehicle that the driver should look at. I teach to look at the tires as they approach the boundaries. The parking space is in the passenger mirror but you should focus on the drivers side mirror and check the back row of cones and axles. That’s how I see it. Thanks for the comment!

Without getting out, how are you able to see that the real of the trailer is past the forward set of cones? Will you be able to use mirrors to determine this?

Tim, great question… You’ll be able to use the mirror but at some point prior to the test it would be nice if you can position the trailer a couple of times and see where it’s actually is past the cones and then you can look in your mirror and see what it looks like. It will require you to get out and look during your practice session. You really don’t want your trailer to be past the cones very much. It’s simple getting used to what it looks like. You’ll get your best image by looking at the trailer tires. Best of luck!

I've been learning the old school way. Spent 2 months with my dad he's an owner op. He put me in the driver seat and said go lol. Spent 2 months hauling frac sand with him. Those sites are a bitch to back in to.. If I fail next week it will surprise me. I heard a lot of schools only give the students a short time behind the wheel I wonder if that's true? I'm gonna buy my truck so hopefully I won't have to put up with the " Oh you don't qualify since you didn't graduate from an accredited school"..

If you've watched my videos and you can do the inspections, park and maneuver the rig and drive safe and in control then you'll do fine. Use the clutch, you'll get marked off if you don't and you could fail the driving portion because there are a lot of shifting points that could put you over the allotted amount. Driving schools are designed to get you from a permit to a license and the driving will come when you hire on with a company that has a training program. You don't have to do it that way, you can go the route that you've chosen. Best of luck and thanks for the comment!

Everything has to be practiced. Try to do the maneuver step by step and get out several times while you practice. You have to know how the vehicle looks in the mirrors. Practice, practice and practice some more. Thanks and good luck!

I need help i keep failing my dmv test, taking it in a day cab and the trailers a double axel. When im backing up to line the cone up for my first turn where should the cone be?

Line the forward cone up a small distance behind the back of the trailer. You need to be past. Start with a hard left and watch the structure on the landing gear in the passenger side mirror, go half way (middle) and stop. Then steer hard right and line up the tractor with the trailer looking in the drivers side mirror you should be able to see the back row of cones and you should be lined up straight to the middle of that. Back straight until the trailer outside tire, back axle rests on the entrance boundary line. Here where I'm at, it's painted yellow then stop. Get out and look. get back in the truck and steer hard right and that kicks the back of the tractor towards the same boundary line as you did the trailer, don't go over it...then stop. Now steer hard left and bring the front of the truck into the parking space. Your truck will react the same as the video but as you approach the entrance boundary line make adjustments as need to get results. If you go beyond a step and it's not done correctly you'll fight this so take your time to do each part correctly. Let me know how it turns out. Thanks

Maybe never, I've addressed this same question before. This is a test to evaluate your ability to maneuver this type of vehicle in a challenging situation. Out of all the maneuvers, the straight line backing is the only one that will ever be done like this test. You don't offset, alley dock or parallel park like this in a real world setting. It frustrated me when I was told this is the way it has to be done for the test so you have to teach it this way. I'm sure you'll get the practical lessons with a trainer. Thank you for the comment!

Larcardo, The first turn to the left is all the way. Try to get as much done in the shortest amount of distance. Remember you're limited on the amount of space you have on this manuver, lenght of truck plus 15 additional feet. Not sure if the information got to you before you test but GOOD LUCK!
