I remember purchasing this game initially in 2007 and being put off by it's initial gameplay mechanics as I was comparing it to Neverwinter Nights 2. However, in 2015, I started playing the game as things were tight financially and I saw this game in my library of games I hadn't played to completion. Long story short, I started replaying the game and man, was I glad that I did. From the second into the third trilogy, this game has truly become the gift that keeps on giving.

In a way the one thing most people want changed is what I liked the most, the combat. I just love watching Geralt performaning all these cool sword dances in OG Witcher based on your chosen style, it looks more like how a Witcher should fight. And I say this as a person who like most people started with the third game first. I also liked the potion system a lot more.

A lot of times I ask the question "Why do a remake?" Like, why do we need another version of Skyrim that plays identically to the older version, just with slightly better graphics? Or TLOU remakes, which are clearly just cash grabs. But this time a remake makes PERFECT sense. The Witcher 1 was a game that was clearly limited by factors beyond lack of creativity or good ideas. It suffered from a limited budget, and the hardware limitations of the time, and it has aged about as well as an avocado. If there's any game in history that deserved a second chance, it's this one.

here's a major issue. geralt does not start remembering yen until the start of witcher 2. like he indirectly mentions them just not by name. so just having her and ciri named dropped in a witcher 1 remake would cause plot holes as geralt does not really remember either of them until 2. heck i forgot he evens mentioned ciri in 2 until i replayed it recently.

1) Witcher 3 should be more like Witcher 1 story-wise (not other way around). 2) Neon Knight thinks them saying they are going to update the story means that they are going to expand it and tie it to sequels. In reality it means sucking up to ESG and making it more crap for "modern audience".

I love all games of the Witcher trilogy but the first one has a special place in my heart. Witcher 1 has the most dense atmosphere of them all and I have missed that a lot playing Witcher 2 and Witcher 3. I hope the remake is not going to rid off elements making that dense atmosphere. Witcher 1 is absolutely the best game in the series. They are all great games, W2 is weakest for me, W3's open world bored me to death, but HoS expansion was amazing. 5:12 The Witcher games plot develops and changes based on player choices. And apparently there is a continuity between the entire trilogy based on the game saves. Which means that if you complete W1 but start W2 without uploading your old W1 saves, all your decisions from the first game are no lonver valid and you gameplay get's back to the "default" story. Obviously the same applies for W2 and W3. Not sure if that works with Thaler, because haven't killed him myself, but if you start Witcher 3 "fresh", then for sure Thaler is alive in that witcherverse.

They could title it _The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf_ after a planned console release of the first game that never came to be. _The Witcher Remake_ while on point, is a bit bland for my taste and giving it a subtitle makes it blend nicely with titles of other games.

I don’t kno . Initially, I was excited, ecstatic even , for the news about the original game getting remade. And then, in a recent interview or description of this remake, I heard the phrase that I hate the most. A phrase that has nothing to do with entertainment or authenticity, or genuineness. A phrase that means shitting on the very successes and establishments that made the original so loved. It shits all over that success while prioritizing non-entertainment aspects. And that phrase is, which was the one they used to describe this remake, “a reimagining for modern day audiences” 😡 😡 🤦‍♂️ 😡 My excitement for this project has since immediately plummeted into oblivion, and my worry is astronomical. More than likely I will just hold on to my fond memories of this original PC game and not dilute it with the pattern of “modern day audience” bullshit with something I hold dear .

Just finished The Witcher again today. Enjoyed it a lot once I got used to the dated gameplay mechanics. I bought the game originally on release date (in Poland). It was like... 15, 16 years ago? It was chep, even for that day's standards, and contained disks, short-story with Striga from The Last Wish, compendium and a map I believe. Very rich for a very low price. Replaying TW2 at the moment, this one dated a lot better, but nothing beats the atmosphere of TW1 - grim, dark, way more than the next two. But it was obvious how much inspiration they actually took from the book when creating some story points, way more than in TW2 and TW3 that went their own way when it comes to the atmosphere. Probably more accurate to the books, less accurate to TW1. I can't wait for the remake tho, TW1 has brilliant story, one could argue the main quest is the best from the trilogy, with the best twists near the end., For Alvin and other stuff - SPOILERS FROM THE GAME BELOW: Yeah, he was kinda Ciri's replacement, BUT not 1:1. He was "What could Ciri become if she was raised the wrong way". Look at De Aldersberg ;) Witcher 1's story is mentioned a few times in TW2 and TW3. It's not directly followed, because there is no point in it. Alvin's fate is sealed, Javed and his crew is dead, job is done. It actually blends very nicely into Witcher 2 with the assasination attempt. And Geralt decides to go after Yennefer after retrieving his memories so it kinda makes sense.

I loved the original The Witcher 1, but I think it's biggest acomplishment would be to make this incredible story not only cohesive with the rest of the trilogy, but also more friendly to the players. Because playing this game could be so frustrating sometimes, and not for the right reasons. That's the biggest thing that makes people look away from playing old games, and a remake of a game everyone will be interested in, but almost no one has played, is literally perfect.

I think it also makes a lot of sense because CDPR gets to learn/explore Unreal engine in a situation where half the work is already done (the story and characters). Look at BioWare and the issues they had trying to build Inquisition and more specifically Andromeda (albeit with a much less optimized engine). While their writers are creating the Witcher4 concept and story, their developer are learning all the hard lessons they need about the new engine early. It also doesn't hurt that this thing will probably sell really well and give a good influx of cash during the lean years as the Witcher4 is still getting ready and hopefully give them the ability to polish (haha) it before release.

My biggest concern is precisely that the original version will somehow vanish from my steam library, be updated, or something. I mean, it can happen - so how can I be sure that it won't? Other than that... For me, each of those games has something special. Granted, the third game has a great world, but the second game has a better gameplay (at least to me it does)... and TW1 contains a few incredibly atmospheric bits (Wyzima murder investigation; solving the Vodyanoi; and the whole thing at Murky Waters) that I doubt can be redone without losing a lot. Also, the potion acquiring system is better in TW1, the character development and inventory screens are way better than in 2 or 3, some potions work better (especially Cat), alcohol works better (well... Geralt can drink at all, that is), and even the "card collecting", while silly, has its own charm. I mean, yes, there are some things that might be augmented, such as graphics and certain story and bestiary inconsistencies, but there is a lot that should be kept as is. That's why people fear thorough reworking of TW1.

I would be happy if it was just brought to W2 standards. Tbh. I've been able to replay both w2 and w3 multiple times each. I tried to replay w1, but it's so tedious that i end up stopping during the questing slog that is the first section of Vizima. I like the whole Geralt as a detector concept, but it's hidden behind too many boring side quests. Sure, there are some great ones too, but they aren't the majority. Obviously, I would prefer if it was a full open world Tameria, but I think the smaller, more linear world spaces could translate nicely into Witcher 2 style maps.

Potentially unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't mind other titles with Geralt. I would find it more rational if they transitioned smoothly between one character and another without having the more familiar one disappearing entirely. Just as Vesemir and other important NPCs, we could have an IP where Ciri is the main protagonist, but Geralt is still around and can be interacted with. We all know and love Ciri just as much as Geralt, so it would be a nice incentive to head into new directions without burning any bridges.

I played the first game when it first appeared, 2006 or 2007 if I remember well. My God, I'm old🤣🤣

I had to record part (second half-ish) of this video in a hotel with a different mic… you’re the first person to comment so hopefully it isn’t too bad. I could only really tell with headphones

I'm so excited for the remake and its many improvements. But I think his amnesia won't be rewritten as it is still a major plot-point in Witcher 2. Same with Triss abusing his amnesia. Other than that I hope to see/hear more about Yen and Ciri in the first one. And PLEASE a reworked swamp I hated that place to death in the first one.

The thing is we shouldn't be hearing about Yen or Ciri from Triss. She's being manipulative and wants Geralt to herself. It's Dandelion and Zoltan that should directly mention Yen and Ciri while being weirded out that Geralt can't remember them at all.

@@flamesofchaos13 True, although it doesn't exactly fit Triss character as described in books... I'm not saying games have to follow the books 100%, just observing the difference :) .

@@flamesofchaos13 yeah Triss shouldn't be talking about them at all since she's being manipulative but it would be nice if we'd see more traces about them in the world or other characters mentioning them. Geralt only gains his memory back in 2 so the devs hopefully remember that 😅
