Which Super Mario Odyssey Boss is the Absolute Worst One?

I have a love hate relationship with the bosses in Super Mario Odyssey. So here’s the thing; In my opinion Super Mario Odyssey has some of the best boss fights in all of the Super Mario series, but while some of the bosses are really great highlights of the game, there are also some bosses that are … well not. This kind of leaves us with an eternal question? Why are some of the bosses in Super Mario Odyssey better than others? What is it that makes a Super Mario Odyssey boss really great, why are some of them so annoying, and most important of all? Which out of all the Super Mario Odyssey Boss fights is the best one, and which one is the absolute worst? In this video we are going to investigate those eternal questions, because today we are going to rank all the bosses in Super Mario Odyssey and we are going to put them into a formidable Super Mario tier list!

Actually, the mummy spawns aren't random at all. If you'll notice, the mummies always spawn in coordination with his attacks.. for example, the spawn in a trail of his fists when they fly at you, so it'd make sense that you'd fall into them on your way down. And when they spawn in front of you while dodging his fist slam attack, they always spawn in front of the knuckles. You can see this more earlier in the video when he calls down the icicles, that when he slams his palms down, mummies spawn beneath him, perhaps to try and teach the player that his fists corelate with the mummies.

While their spawns may correlate to his attacks, that information needs to be clearly conveyed to the player. If, as his fists fly at you, some bones rattle off and quickly grow into mummies, the player can easily see the connection. If you're just fighting the boss blind, it can be hard to notice the pattern to the mummies spawning while also watching (and dodging) the more obvious attacks

I get why he doesn't like it. It feels like a cop out solution than an actual solution. But I agree with you and think its a great idea for accessibility reasons. I've recommended Hollow Knight to so many people and they are all turned away from the difficulty and it's a shame because it's such an amazing game with a beautiful world and story.

Octo is actually one of my favorite boss fights in the game. It helps that the little octo captures are one of my favorite captures in the game, but my favorite element of the fight is the fighting arena, or lack there of. Most boss fights take place inside these little fenced off controlled environments. You can usually just smell a boss fight coming based on the room you just stepped into. Octo takes you by surprise and turns the whole level into his battle field, he can almost go anywhere. This makes him feel like a threat if not to me but to everyone in the level, he's on the loose and you need to take him down.

I think you might be underestimating the difficulty of the broodal fights. I've seen my sister struggle more than an hour on each of them (yes, the main story ones, not the moon ones). Granted, she's not an adult, but mario games arent hard games made for highly experienced gamers

Trying the robobrood boss fight without captures is straight up a Shadow of the colossus battle and that's one of the most memorable things I have ever seen in a Mario game. Also, honestly I always try to defeat the bunny girl as fast as I can just because of how annoying and loud her laugh is.

if there's one boss i cannot understand for the life of me, it's torkdrift (the wooded kingdom's ufo boss). after defeating spewart, you get sent back to the odyssey and go forward. from there, you have to blow up a wall with some tanks, then climb a vine and go up to a more open area where you have to blow up a path upwards with more tanks. after climbing some more, it reaches the logical conclusion with you hitting moving targets with the tanks, so you'd expect the boss to be based around the tanks, right? ...and then the boss takes place ENTIRELY AS AN UPROOT

Music is a VERY important part in boss fights. I put Peaches Castle over the dragon boss fight, and it made it feel so much different. It felt a lot less epic, and I made more mistakes because the music made the boss fight seem easier.

Very good point with that sweet spot. Especially with the switch, it also shifts depending on where you play. I found Mario Kart to be absolutely impossible to play in a subway as distractions shorter than a second are more than enough to throw you off the track. Mario Odyssey is, in the story anyway (not talking optional challenges here) more on the easy side of things, but that's the perfect sweet spot in a subway. In a regional train on the other hand, I couldn't beat many of the allegedly easy challenges because the train's just so bloody fidgety. Tried to beat a boss on said train 5 times, failed. Got the last third hour to home in subway, boss beaten without breaking sweat. Of course, when playing on the (big) home TV, things get even more easier due to better vision and even more calm all around me.

Hey ceave if you have trouble with Harriet, something that I found is that if you get close to her, she will move away. So instead of walking in a circle around her, you can actually just walk slowly straight forward and then you dont really have to aim, just throw your cap straight forward and you will get the fast kill almost every time.

I think that the Monster Hunter games are really good at using skill ceilings and perceived danger. It's not that tough to beat a monster (except for some monsters that stand out as major threats), but you can become really good at predicting its attacks and fighting it faster, which is amplified by the fact that you have to fight any given monster several times if you want to make equipment out of them. That's the main reason why the grinding is better than a lot of games.

I'm currently playing Super Mario Galaxy, and they definitely did that! For example, to reach King Kaliente, you need to defeat two octopi thingy who shoot fireballs and coconut at you. They are there to prepare you to the fight. Similarly, when you need to beat the big Beatle thingy, there are tons of places that you can ground pound before reaching it.

Mollusk at least made you use a fun capture, mechawiggler was just bad, frustrating and boring. Plus, you don't have to be on top of Mollusk to damage him, if you drop down a bit, you can spray water towards him, and you can kill him from a distance. This requires some skill and makes the fight shorter, wich is a plus. It's a shame the mechawiggler doesn't really do that.

You know, now I think about it, I didn't really like any of the bosses except the mech. Bowser's fights were okay, but nothing special, and the rest felt too gimmicky, or just boring. Edit: the sand kingdom boss was cool, but the fact I forgot about it says something... Also the decapitated head with two floating hands has been done to death already, so it's not very unique other than the fact you use his own hands against him.

I feel that issues with the postgame rematches shouldn't have removed points if the main boss fight was really good. Like, Knucklotec's postgame rematch is annoying and doesn't feel like it was balanced well. But the main battle against him, while really simple and easy, I feel makes for a great battle. Like you said, its super cinematic and epic, and the hands feel really satisfying to control on top of that. You spoke about Pokémon needing some sort of difficulty change, and I absolutely agree. The whole reason Nuzlocking became a thing is because people wanted some actual difficulty from the games. The thing is, this series has a very large fan base of gamers who grew up with the series, but they're still being treated like children who just level up their most powerful pokemon and smash it head-first into the Elite Four until they win. A good player doesn't need to do that at all, because they know to have a balanced team, but the thing is, they don't even *need* that. It would be perfectly fine to just get one single overpowered pokemon for pretty much any entry. Hell, I beat Pokémon Emerald with a single Lotad, without any other pokemon to assist!

I think the issue is Game Freak doesn’t particularly cater to the older fan base for Pokémon. If you notice how hand holdy things went from Gen 6 to Gen 7, you’ll see what I mean. Game Freak focuses on making it easier for children to adapt to, the real target audience for the franchise. It’s where the revenue really comes from since children will have strong nostalgic memories and continue to get games in the series. Which is why they need to make the Post game more difficult to make up for the fact the main game is so easy.

I honestly liked all of them, you make good points on why you disliked the bottom two, but I thought they all used the mechanics in interesting ways. Fair point about the tank controls, though.
