Just about every neighborhood here is cheaply built and nothing about them is good. I’m waiting for a tornado to come through and cause a crazy amount of damage. We’ve had multiple severe warned supercells come over so it’s gonna happen at some point. Just gotta wait. Once that happens maybe they’ll start to build quality houses instead of making them cheap to make a ton of overpriced housing real quick.

Especially since the house was open to the weather. Wind could have easily enter and lifted up on the roof and out with the walls. Wind blowing over the house would have reduced the air pressure immediately above, leaving the roof more vulnerable to wind being caught inside.

Thank you Our slogan is exceeding industry standard and we do put special attention to the structure behind the finishes to be sure the skeleton of the structure meets and exceeds the requirements. This is the most intricate part of integrity when a storm like this hits and some building inspectors won’t even catch some of the critical connections. Many framers aren’t taught the engineering behind some of these connections or they just don’t care and do it just because that’s the way we always did it. We teach our guys the importance of these connections and why we do it. Thank you for your comment

Seriously though...heartbreaking to see what has happened in your town💔 I never even heard of a Derecho until I saw another video of this same day on here. I live 20 miles north of Galveston & this is exactly what a hurricane looks like, but with steadily rising water on the ground level & lasting 5-8 hours instead of 20-30 min. I feel like these storms are more dangerous than our hurricanes because at least we get enough of a warning to prepare & evacuate...

It's really not though. Hurricanes blow through in many hours or days, not minutes, and the storm structure is nothing like a hurricane. Maybe to people that know almost nothing about storms, or people that have only seen brief hurricane footage on TV. The only real similarities are heavy rain, possible hail and brief spin up tornadoes (which are all most severe storms anyway) and strong sustained straight line winds. I use sustained lightly because as thunderstorm events go it's a good while, but compared to a hurricane, there really is no comparison between the two with time scales.

Had one of these go through the Detroit area in 1981. I remember it well. Power was out for two weeks and it was amazing how so many miles of area were affected. The sidewalks and driveways were heaved up as massive old oak and maple trees were blown over and the roots ripped up as the trees cut houses into two. It was known as the great green storm. We watched in rolling in like a massive black wave falling over itself because the clouds were so dark, then after the storm finally passed the sunlight passing through the clouds caused only the green spectrum of light to pass for about three minutes.

Side note: When you do tall garages like that make the posts to each side of the doors much beefier then use a plug-wall above the door opening in case you need to have a taller door later. A 4' tall plug above the main opening that you can remove (lag and strapping) can be very very useful.

You folks did a good job. Often when a house has a way for the wind to get inside, big storms like this (tornadoes, derechos, hurricanes) just tear the building apart from the inside. Take a look at some of the stuff Tim Marshall has documented over the years (professional engineer, inspector retired from Haag down in TX). Yeah, this was one of the worst derechos in IA / IL in many years. I've seen many and this one was a real monster. Because of their size and the breadth of the damage, I'll take a tornado hands down by comparison (no, tornadoes don't last 15 min - good call). I work for one of the local cellular service companies and our data center not far from where you folks were at lost it's roof completely. We're still doing cleanup to buildings, towers, etc. Thanks for sharing this!

Damn that was crazy. You guys were lucky that house wasn't further in the building process or else i dont think it'd have help us quite as well as it did. the wind had plenty of room to move around and not get stuck. Good job on the house and those shingles were tough af.

The most impressive thing was how long it lasted.. normally those storms are moving at over 60-80mph

Winds were clocked at 140mph in Cedar Rapids. That would be classified as a category 4 hurricane.
@tvold9204
@tvold9204 2 жыл бұрын
@@GP80888 Several issues with this. 1. They were not clocked. It was a damage survey group surveying damage a few miles OUTSIDE of the city limits to the southwest of C.R. 2. The highest ever actually measured gust in Iowan history, caused by this derecho aswell funnily enough, was in Atkins, IA at 126 MPH. 3. If you have ever seen cat 4 hurricane damage, you'd know the trees have basically NO leaves on them, while in the damage images the trees still retain most leaves. The reason I am using defoliation as a wind metric is it is quite universal. While structures are built better in Hurricane Prone areas, the tree leaf retention against wind is largely the same. 4. The saffir-simpson hurricane scale measures by SUSTAINED WINDS, not gusts. So there ya go, you are wrong greg.

An unfinished house which still had some large openings might come through strong winds better than a finished house. If moving air has space to go through without pressing against a solid wooden wall, it could do that instead of knocking the wall down completely.

Very well could be. But 2x6 garage walls, more anchor bolts used than minimum requirement, gable and truss bracing done to exact engineer spec with no cut corners to save material, sheeting made sure to properly catch sill plate and both top plates, a garage portal nailed and strapped properly, and all the right structural nails used in the truss hurricane ties probably helped :)

@@clemconstructiongroup1700 I would definitely use this video to show someone why they should hire your company over the possibly cheaper one that built the other under construction home. In the long run it pays off spending more to do it right (plus some). Kudos to your company 👏 🙌 hopefully your own homes faired as well or better than this one!

19:20 - "Skogman houses are going down" Are you suggesting that when it's time to build, we DON'T go with Skogman? ;) Note: In Fairfax the wind really only ever went in one direction - NW to SE. No wonder Marion was so bad if y'all got it from both directions.

I was in a Hurricane in 1998, Hurricane George that hit the island of Puerto Rico as a category 2 storm 10 miles away from cat 3.the damage was something incredible I remember seeing a hose or what was a house that the only thing standing was the floor and a refrigerator in one of the corners.

Went to Coe College in Cedar Rapids a number of years ago. Still can't believe that Cedar Rapids went thru this kind of storm. With all the wild fires on the west coast, the increase in storm strength in hurricanes and typhoons and now Derechos, it seems unbelievable to me that people don't believe in climate change to some degree. Moved to Florida, and went thru a number of hurricanes, so I can remember the destruction. Never thought I would see the day where hurricane winds would become something we would witness in the middle of the country. Tornadoes and cyclones yes, but hurricane force winds for prolonged periods in the midwest, not in my lifetime.
