Quick tip for cleaning your ceramics, when they get blacked up they don't sharpen so well, so run a pencil eraser over them to clean them up.

I've started linking to this video in various knife related forums when people ask for recommendations for their first, inexpensive sharpening tool. I have stones and sharpening systems galore, but this one little tool has replace them all for 99% of my sharpening due to the convenience. I gifted a young man I worked with a decent folder and showed him how to use one of these to maintain it. Then gifted him the WSGFS I was teaching him on. Gave me an excuse to buy a new one and helps me justify my knife habit.

Good video! I have used this sharpener for about 2 years, with good results. It is a FIELD sharpener - don't expect it to take the place of $350 worth of Naniwa stones. That said, I was pressed to repair the overstropped convex edge of the 1095 steel blade of a Tops Brakimo. Using the plates as you would a full size set of quality stones, going back and forth along the length, versus pulling the edge across the plates, I was able to rework the edge to the proper profile, then refine with the ceramic and small strop. The knife was put back into service, then properly refinished once I was able to use my traditional strop with green and white compounds. The knife is sharper today than it has been in years. I absolutely agree that this is an excellent tool for all blade owners, especially those uncertain about sharpening or unwilling to learn and buy high quality stones. With this kit you can keep a blade 100% serviceable for a very long time - long enough to learn and save for quality stones. I have also used the hook sharpener for some of my expensive japanese hooks, as well as the broadhead removal tool. Also, I don't remember if Pete mentioned it, but the ceramic rod is held in place by a small silver pin. If you remove the pin, the ceramic rod can be used outside of its housing. Worksharp has also made all parts of this kit replaceable and offers them separately. In my opinion, it was money well spent.

Hey, from Nova Scotia, Canada. Thanks for the video, I have about 11 pocket knives everything from Case, Crkt Spyderco, Browning, Kershaw, Gerber, Sog. The reason I (dumb) have so many is because once the knife became dull I simply couldn’t sharpen properly with a variety of other sharpeners. Since I purchased this sharpener, I have sharpened most all to a razor sharp edge .
@zleggitt1989

Little tip.. When sharpening on this or any stone don't run the tip of the knife off of the stone, that'll cause your tip to blunt. Try stopping when the tip of the knife has been sharpened then lift the blade off instead of continuing the motion off the stone

I thought you were crazy for commenting this on petes video, as its such a novice mistake, generally. He does do that, though. Pretty bad, some times. Bad enough to likely snap the ultra fine tip on a few of the really hard PM2s. No hate or anything, ive been sharpening most of my life but cant say id be comfortable putting a video of me doing it on yt for everyone to criticize. Edit: also suggest lifting a bit to maintain the edge angle at the tip

This is my hunting sharpener but also has become my main sharpener for all blades, pocket or hunting or kitchen, because reasons. The thing works reliably for me, and I havent pulled the trigger on a full set of diamond plates. Agree 100% that a good stropping, even with the basic green aluminum oxide compound, has allowed me to achieve better edges than I would have been able to achieve with whatever other sharpening steps I would have otherwise used.
@kevola5739

Luv that sharpener. I found that holding the knife with your index finger on the spine and your thumb on the side of the handle will lock your wrist for more accuracy with maintaining blade angle. For the opposite side your thumb will be on the spine and your index finger on the side of the handle or blade. This grip transitions well to your regular sharpening stones once muscle memory is established using this system.

It was my first and for a long time only sharpening tool and I`ve sharpened everything from small pocketknives up to hatches, axes and machetes with it. If I could only have one sharpening tool, I would say this is it. It can do everything I actually need especially when paired with decent hand sharpening skills. It´s only about 35Euro here which is a steal, I pay more for a single Shapton Whetstone. Enjoyed your video Pete, maybe you`ll get into free hand sharpening next? :D

I have one of these in my lunch box to sharpen my work knives and Leatherman (I use a Wicked Edge on my nice knives and a Chef’s Choice Trizor 15 on my kitchen knives, along with a few strops). It works great for what it is. I had to straighten the edge on my S110V Spyderco Para 3 with it once because it got a little nick and I wasn’t near my house, and I DON’T recommend that, but for relatively soft work steels it does a great job if you keep them maintained. Excellent product if you have realistic expectations of it.

I’m like I could take it to him to sharpen all my pocket knives. Now my daddy has passed, and I need to teach my sons. I would get a edge on our dull knives but then once I took it to the last grit I would dull it every time. Well…. Just got one of these and I freaking love it. Haven’t got it sharpen enough to shave hair “yet”. But I’m stubborn as heck and don’t give up very easy!! So excited! I just might be able to teach them soon.

I have that. My first sharpener. If you have a steady hand it does a pretty darn good job. The tilt system would make an even bevel compared to a kme which would some areas of the knife bevel wider if it’s ground to be thicker. Edit: wanted to add that the ceramic section is removable so that can be your field sharpener making it a good one system for home and field.

I really like this sharpener and its design. For my larger knives, rather than draw the edge across the sharpener, I can grip it to do the opposite and draw the sharpener across the edge. Works like a charm. I wouldn't do that with a brick. Takes practice though. lol But like you said, you're not going to ruin your knife. It'll be fine.

spider Outdoors if you think these are heavy? You need to do some exercise. But a ceramic rod and a bit of leather to strop and Bob’s your uncle!

Thanks for the demo. I've had inconsistent results freehanding so it was interesting to watch you do the full process. I'm guessing I just need more strokes at each grit level. It'll help form the muscle memory too.

yeah, its not a particularly exciting solution, but practice and confidence is generally the ticket

I don't know if this has been pointed out but the small round section of ceramic is for sharpening serrations.

I have watched so many of your videos...sorry I am so late to subscribing! I am a free-hand sharpener and quite adept at it. I keep a Spyderco Double-stuff in each of my carry bags. It has served me well for over 20 years. After a touch up in the field or at work, I always finish my edges on a Knives Plus strop block. My primary sharpening system consists of a Course (DMT) Diamond Stone, Extra Fine (DMT) Diamond Stone and I use a Spyderco 306 Ceramic Stone to polish...yep, I finish on the Knives Plus Strop Block. Cheers! Aaron
