Cowboys rumors yesterday were led by the report that Lamb will request a trade if he doesn’t get at least $32 million per year from the Dallas Cowboys. While Bobby Belt confirmed the asking price side, Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is disputing that. Cowboys Report host Tom Downey does his best to figure out what’s true.
Dallas Cowboys rumors on Trey Lance taking over as the QB1 for Dak Prescott have emerged, thanks to a Jane Slater, Tom Pelissero and Bucky Brooks conversation on NFL Network’s The Insiders. Slater started the conversation off with a request for the blogs to not aggregate this because it wasn’t info from inside the building, just ideas being thrown around. And then NFL.com’s headline for the video was “Brooks: I believe Cowboys have thrown around idea of Trey Lance as long-term QB1” and the aggregation went into overdrive.
Here’s what Brooks actually said: “I’m sure they’ve had some conversations about what do you think the end game is for Trey Lance. So if Trey Lance has an opportunity to play … I think you could make the case that maybe we move forward with the young guy. And give Trey Lance the opportunity to take the baton from Dak Prescott. So, yes, I do believe that conversation has been had in the Cowboys office.”

Thanks for the video. I have no interest in any other wide receivers. The Cowboys have a bunch of wide receivers who may have the potential to become WR2 someday and will be competing for WR3 and WR4 positions this year. I'm assuming that they will have five wide receivers on the roster and probably three or four on the practice squad. Any of them could have a future in the NFL. I'd rather see the Cowboys give them playing time and figure out which ones offer potential for the future than to see the Cowboys sign another older player who will not be part of the future. I would not have drafted Ryan Flournoy, but now that the Cowboys have drafted him, they need to give him a fair evaluation. Maybe he has real potential to be WR2 on this team. Brandin Cooks is near the end of his career. I'd love to see Ryan Flournoy establish himself as the successor at WR2. Maybe Jalen Tolbert will develop into the potential that the Cowboys originally saw in him. Many fans think that Jalen Brooks is going to be a solid contributor to this team. Kavontae Turpin has played well enough in the roles that the Cowboys have given him. He's a little older, but he could still be part of the future. David Durden is a favorite dark horse candidate to become a contributor. Those are just the names that I can remember. The Cowboys should evaluate and develop the young talent that they have. The Cowboys need to sign Cee Dee Lamb, but they need to make clear that if he holds out for more money before his contract is finished, they will not renegotiate. I don't care whether he gains five thousand yards next year, he's not getting more money until he plays out whatever contract they negotiate. The Cowboys cannot afford to get players on good long-term contracts that made those players highly paid at the time of the signing and then give them more money because the market has changed.

The only real answer is to part with Dak, go with Lance or another QB for fractions of Daks contract and spread that money around and build a real team.
