Cefalù is a medieval italian Borgo located on the northern coast of Sicily, circa 70 km from Palermo. It was probably built at the end of the fifth century BC, on a promontory dominated by an imposing rock. The name "Cefalù" derives from the Greek Kefaloidion, the meaning of which is linked to the characteristic shape of the rock that rises above it like a small head.
Over the centuries the city was dominated by Greeks, Syracusans, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, but traces of a pre-Hellenic settlement are in the megalithic walls that surround the current historic center and the Temple of Diana, on the rock.
The urban structure was ideated in the Roman period, while traces of the Byzantine age are once again found on the fortress where the inhabitants went to live. Please, enjoy.
