FULL HOW TO AT / muddymuddymuddmann
This video explains why a regular AC motor cannot be used AS IS to act as an electrical power generator.
/ muddymuddymuddmann
The ceiling fan motors have the stator in the center and the outer portion that usually attaches to the fan blades rotates around the stationary stator. This allows for Neodymium Magnets
A to be placed around the perimeter. When the outer portion spins, it produces an alternating current not usable by your house appliances.
A diode bridge is an arrangement of four (or more) diodes in a bridge configuration that provides the same polarity of output for either polarity of input. When used in its most common application, for conversion of an alternating current (AC) input into direct current a (DC) output, it is known as a bridge rectifier.
The combination of this arrangement makes a rather efficient generator at a very low cost per watt.

I've done 3 of these. Here's the secret. Don't put north on one coil then south on the next . Use smaller magnets putting them ns ...sn...ns...sn. Or turn the magnets on their side the same way south facing south and north facing north. This doubles the power and spins easier. You will be amazed. I'm lighting 45 watt AC bulbs with the slightest breeze. Try it

I found Muddy's vids a few months back and it gave me a ton of inspiration with the fans,while yours have given me great ideas for hot water + your solar cell vids are vital! I only wish had the money you guys have for materials....Even for a "resourceful handyman" like myself im having trouble accquiring cheap magnets+solarcells...Any suggestions?

Hi, Most DC motors already have magnets in them and operate as a generator. While the magentas are usually NOT neodymium magnets, it will work as is. The motor has brushes and commutators allowing for Direct current usage as a DC motor. So in reverse, the motor will produce DC current. Hook a voltage meter to it and spin the shaft. If it produces current it already has magnets.

Use a normal ac motor as a generator to make ac voltage. If you get the rpms up to the amount on the name plate, then you should have the voltage that's on the name plate too. There's this thing most people don't know, called a MG set, or motor-generator, they use a motor to turn another motor to make isolated ac output.

Hello my host Dan Rojas! I have a question that I couldnt find through google or in your comments. My question is: What is the most efficient electrical generator? a permanent magnet DC motor with brushes, alternator that needs an excited mag field, an ac motor with rectifier, etc? I just want to use the most efficient generator type for my projects. Thanks in advance! I love your videos.

@kevbow0137 Frequency is tied to rotation speed, but so is the voltage that is produced. Of course you can always get around this problem by using DC generator and inverter for the proper AC output. It depends on what you want to use it for. Newer AC generators are being built with larger coils so that the blades can spin slower while still producing the same voltage. Keep in mind these things are going to be massive.
@asbecka
@asbecka 13 жыл бұрын
@kevbow0137 Right, you'd want to use a gearing system or some type of transmission so that the blades can turn fairly slowly, while the generator itself would be rotating at the proper 3600 RPMs. After that, some circuitry can be used to dump the additional energy to help keep the RPMs in the proper range when the winds are higher therefore creating a somewhat decent electromechanical breaking/transmission system.

Some electric motor/generator basics: 1) they are both grounded in electromagnetic principles and both require permanent magnets to function. If you add electric current to a electric motor it causes it to spin, if you spin the shaft of an electric motor it generates a current. This occurs regardless of whether it is an A.C. Or D.C. motor. While adding a rectifier to a A.C. Motor being used as a generator, the D.C. current it produces isn't the best without the best without the addition of addi

What if you used a separate supply to activate the electromagnet of a regular A/C motor- then is there any way to make it act as a generator without permanent magnets?
@asbecka
@asbecka 13 жыл бұрын
Besides not wanting it to fly apart, you also don't want the blades going so fast that they are creating sonic booms either. On the big turbines that you see, the tips are going slightly over 300 some MPH even though they look like they are moving quite leisurely.
@asbecka
@asbecka 13 жыл бұрын
@kevbow0137 to get the proper frequency to use it as an A.C. generator, you need to control the rotation rate of the device. For instance, if you want 60Hz, you'll need to ensure a spin rate of 3600 RPM or 60*60, if your dealing with 50Hz it'll be 3000 RPM or 50*60. That being said, you wouldn't want to do that unless you are either off grid or have a piece of equipment that synchronizes the signals going into the house. This goes for D.C. to A.C. conversion as well.

Also, while less critical, there is no regulation circuitry either. Just like ripple reduction (the purpose of the capacitor) there are a variety of ways to do this, some of which are quite simple.
@asbecka

@kevbow0137 resistors would be an easy way, a little more efficient way would be some regulation circuitry that would send the excess to the resistor bank when the voltage goes over a certain threshold.

The magnets must be as close to the coils as possible for maximum energy transfer. The further away, the more energy you lose. They also need to have their field orientation pointing at the right direction so the lines of flux that cut across the windings will have the most efficient transfer possible. You don't want the magnets fighting each other, nor a negative feedback loop from incorrect relationship to the windings becoming temporary energized electromagnets fighting the magnets.

It is also falsely stated that A.C. signals will destroy or play havoc with your household appliances. The more likely problem would be inappropriate frequency, since the circuitry is designed to work with

Why can't you use AC current in your home? In my home, the output of the lighting and 30 amp or lower wall outlets are 120v AC and the higher capacity appliances are either hardwired, with or equipped with a dedicated 240v AC outlet, and matching input amperage rating supply power cord plug, non interchangeable, but supply input is 120-240v AC @ 200 amps, not a single DC supply receptacle on any wall outlet.
