This video is about The difference is Ceiling fan and table fan direction of rotation.
Table fan normally rotates in Clockwise direction,
whereas Ceiling fan rotates in anti-clockwise direction.
Watch this video to know the science behind this.
Both are fans are apparently used for same purpose,
but what makes them to rotate in different directions?
The straight reason is the difference in the construction of the motors in it.
Both the fans are generally using a Single Phase AC Induction motor.
But the difference is the construction of rotor and stator.
In Ceiling fans, the stationary coil winding, the stator is at the centre of the hub fixed with the ceiling supports and it is stationary.
Whereas the rotor is circumferential outside. It is like a ring attached with the cup that holds the fan blades. And this rotates the blades.
It is this difference in the motor construction that makes the Ceiling fan
to rotate in anti-clockwise direction and Table fan in the clockwise direction.
Generally, the principle of motor rotation is that, when a current carrying conductor is placed in the magnetic field a mechanical force is generated and it creates the rotation.
But in actual, most of the induction motors works based on the rotating magnetic field.(RMF)
We have one main winding / coil through which alternate current is passed.
Because it is alternating current, the direction of magnetic field changes
every cycle.
Now to make it as a rotating magnetic field, one more coil
called as starting coil or secondary coil is placed
perpendicular to the main coil.
Even then we have two fluctuating magnetic fields only,
Now to make a rotating magnetic field out of it,
a capacitor is introduced to shift the current to the secondary coil
by 90 Degree.
And the resultant is a rotating magnetic field like this.
The purpose of this Secondary coil is only trigger the main coil
field to a rotational direction.
Once triggered/started, the main field itself will make the rotor to
rotate and this rotational force is opposite to that of magnetic field.
If you change the polarity of the capacitor through which the
starting coil is connected, then it will initiate the trigger in opposite
direction.
