I’ll never forget how generous Price was to her adoring fans. After a recital here in Dallas in the 90s, I was among the autograph seekers who gathered in the green room to meet her. Not being able to contain myself I burst out with “I love you!” In French, because I was taking French then. Her eyebrows raised and a big smile formed on her face. Before I left she responded in French with “I love you too.” This is one of my favorite memories that I still cherish. Happy Birthday!

I saw/heard her in concert in the late 80s. I went backstage to greet her afterward. Her spokesperson came into the room where her fans waited patiently to announce she's stopping by soon but made it clear, "Miss Price won't be signing any autographs," but he handed out photos of her with a printed signature on them. Then there was the time I went back to meet Marilyn Horne; I was so star-struck I hadn't noticed until later she signed my program. She was so sweet; you felt like you could easily get her to have a beer with you. And when she sang with Sutherland, the earth stopped spinning.

Loved the video! As for Leontyne, I could go on and on about her for hours. She's my absolute favorite singer, and always has been. What you describe as her ability to change her voice to suit the music, this is something I've always admired - how she could lighten it when appropriate, or sing more heavily when that is called for. In addition to her STUNNING pianissimo that you describe, one of the things that I find thrilling about her is the way she can finish an aria that ends with a forte by crescendoing INTO the end. She also has a way of attacking certain notes that give meaning and point to a phrase that totally pulls you in. I was fortunate enough to see her live many times, in recitals with piano, concerts with orchestra, and opera (Trovatore and Ariadne). I've seen MANY of the greats of the past few decades, including Caballe, Sutherland, Sills, Janowitz, Te Kanawa, De Los Angeles, Popp, Norman, Arroyo, Moser, Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras, Vickers.... you get the idea. But NONE of them ever reached down into my soul and moved me to shivers and tears the way she did live. The voice SOARED over you, enveloping you in its gorgeousness, richness, sensuality, and musicality. There will never be another like her. Thank you for posting this! And rock on - you're so fun to watch!

I heard Madame Price in recital at Hunter College many years ago. She was amazing, her encores were longer than the program. One aria after another. Will never forget it.

You said Mrs. Price has " Great diction... & ...jaw loose free of tension", very accurate remark. This is the hardest to achieve for any opera singer during their career. Thanks for sharing.

I am fortunate to have attended a recital by Leontyne Price in Richmond, VA in the early 1980s. With no microphone, her voice powerfully filled the entire auditorium with clear, luscious, and beautiful sound while conveying every nuance of emotion in the songs. She performed six encores and received seven well deserved standing ovations! Brava Diva Price!

Leontyne is responsible for my love of opera, she directly caused it. I heard her 38 years ago singing "Tacea la Notte Placida, Trovatore - Karajan" from the LP record. Her voice came to a verse "Dolci s´udiro e flebili gli accordi d´un liuto". I never heard anything as beautiful before. To my ears, only she can sing it like this. "My God! She is fantastic, who is she?" I found my answer on the record cover - Leontyne Price. I have various beloved sopranos today, buts she was the first. The first love is forever loved She opened the whole universe of opera to me. I am very grateful to her forever. Dangerous woman, I listened to her, she amazed me and I am opera fool forever.

Listen...🤣🤣🤣 2:53. I heard her at Carnegie Hall live back in '87, and let me tell you the Entire audience swooned when she came down off of the High C. The electricity in the house, and anticipation of her phrases were something I've never experienced again in my life!

OMG, Leontyne Price. My best friend in college was a gorgeous sounding soprano. She sat me down and played vissi d'art for me. I cried. She introduced me to opera. I'm an oboe player. I can't sing a note but I listen to singers all the time. I have tons of Miss Price's recordings and I was privileged to hear her live. way before the performance she was in the hall alone "trying out" the hall. Everything about her is stellar and amazing and beyond beautiful. I am subscribing. thank you for these wonders;.

Decades ago I bought a recording of Samuel Barber's Hermit Songs, and fell into the Leontyne Price universe. Have been there ever since. She is a goddess, or at least a manifestation. Her French art songs are out of this world. Her "Addio, mi dolce amor" will make every hair on your body stand up.

Instantly identifiable voice of beauty and superb in her ability to use it to communicate. What has changed? Why are voices largely without distinguishing characteristics now? The 20th century was a true golden age, not just a delusion of us seniors.

This is just my opinion, but I would say with the advent of the jet age the distinctive characteristics of voices became homogenized and “ironed out”. There used to be distinct schools of vocal study, from France to Russia to Germany to Italy… even differences between specific cities in Italy. But that all went away when the modern concept of “an international opera career” became the norm.

Thanks so much for highlighting the great Miss Price! I heard her in a recital in my area when she was nearly 70 and had a cold. Girl, you would never have known it! What did she warm up with? "Let the bright seraphim", high D and all! And she followed that with Elettra's aria from Idomeneo, with the crazy laughing staccati up to high C, etc..... Well, we all just sat there with our jaws dropping....incredible singing! Naturally the whole night went like that. "Pace" was one of the encores!

I recently discovered your channel and it’s been a joy to watch your videos! Leontyne Price is one of the best artists this country has ever produced. Her diction, acting, class, and sheer vocal beauty are unmatched. She had complete control over everything she did. I’m not a singer, just a fan of opera, but IMO the only singer today who comes close to the standard she set is Joyce DiDonato!

If you have a moment, check out her Handel (care selve) and Purcell (dido’s lament)….both simply stunning. This is another great tribute, thank you. LP’s voice is so rich, beautiful and moving! It just washes over you. When listening to her, you are enveloped and immersed by this musical force and it is shear perfection. A true artist.

I want to ask, have you seen the trio of Aida Garifullina, Lara Fabian and Dimash singing Ti Amo Cosi? As an opera singer, you certainly know who Aida is. I think Lara Fabian is also familiar to you. Dimash is considered by many to be the best vocalist alive, also known as Mr. 6 octaves.

LP could be considered the best soprano ever and I would not disagree. However, I disagree with many of the comments. If you are going to dissect the sound note by note, no doubt her high notes achieve perfection. However, many of the comments that follow are inaccurate. For example, the crescendo- decrescendo part in Forza ( or mesa di voce) is not the best ever. As a matter of fact that sound is asymmetrical which is precisely what is not supposed to be. The decrescendo part is shorter. Price has a tendency to scooping the sound and drop the final note of the phrase. Her diction is foggy at best, etc. I am not putting the greatest down. Just saying this person’s analysis is flawed. I believe if you are going to make statements of this nature, they have to be technically accurate. Again, as for beauty of high notes, passion, commitment and so many other good qualities, Price reigns supreme.
