I really enjoyed this video so much! Your chats and laughter great are lots of fun for your viewers. I really hope you get lots of delicious tomatoes from your garden. I have four tomato plants this year! Imagine that! They will give me plenty good tomatoes, I’m hoping! My children don’t like them very much, which is surprising, and our grandsons dong care much for them, either. And I can hardly wait for them to get ripe!

Funny thing about a whippoorwill, a couple years back we had a really loud close one or so we thought that's what it was. I kept listening and finally asked my husband where do they get it's saying whippoorwill when clearly it is not. I finally had to look it up because it just didn't make sense to me. That's when I discovered it was a Chuck-Will's-Widow. I'm 50 years old and never knew there were 2 different ones. Do y'all have both as well? We're from SC. Love Murphy, been to Fields of the Wood many times and love the flea market. Enjoy your videos and pray for your family.

My husband was talking about the Chuck Wills Widow the other day. He said they were a little bit bigger bird and made the distinct sound "chuck wills widow", and everyone called them Whippoorwills, and he couldnt understand why they did since they made that unique sound just like the Whippoorwills call out their own name. We havent heard either bird here in our part of Kentucky for quite a few years now.

when I was little whippoorwills where really common, like circadas, it was the sound everyone thought of as outside especially in the evening, other then circadas its pretty quiet now, I think the migration has moved east of us. Roma (freeze well for sauces and such) and beefsteak, sometimes a few brandy wine, dont do much to them other then tie them up when they get big enough.

Watching Mom's mannerisms - tell me that Corie and Katie don't move just like her - :) My Mom grew tomatoes, cucumbers, mint, and sometimes peppers. She was a natural at gardens and flower growing. She would support her tomatoes with sticks that were part of the bottom of a window shade. (i.e. the stick slid into an opening at the bottom of the widow shade to give support there. She also used long dowel rods. I wish I had paid more attention to her lessons. My daughter says I could kill and artificial plant. 🤣😆

I'm with Matt on the fried green tomatoes, I could make myself sick on them. I live with one of my son's who doesn't eat tomatoes at all unless it's in a sause of some kind. When he was about six years old he and his older brother went out to the garden and ate a belly full of ripe tomatoes and of course they had salt on them and Danny got sick from all that salt and tomatoes and threw up. Since that day he has never wanted any fresh tomatoes and I have a garden full of them. I have to many variables to name and I forgot some of the names already, I'm old lol. I do the Florida weave on my plants, I don't have any cattle panels. I have cukes on the hortinova trellis and the snap beans that will need picking tomorrow.

I buy a big roll of dog wire, welded wire. Cut lengths 6 feet long, twist the cut ends together, and cut two holes out across from one another, one low one higher up. Just really large tomato cages. When plants get about a foot tall, just place over the plant, and I drive a metal stake to the side to keep it from blowing over. They last for years.

Loved this episode on your tomatoes. If you want more volunteers next year, then take a tomato at the end of the season when your cleaning up the garden and just poke it down into the soil. It will come up as a mass of seedlings in the spring and then you can separate it out into individual plants. Also when one of your of Cherokee Purple gets a sucker, root it and you’ll be able to give Matt more of his favorites. Good to hear you like the Juliette. I have some this year and they are doing great. Unfortunately, I have longer to wait for the results as our growing season here is NH is behind you. I agree with Matt about the messy tomato sandwiches! In the height of the season I have one every day for breakfast. Some nice white bread, mayonnaise and onion salt…HEAVENLY.😇 you guys were so funny today..thanks for making me laugh and realizing that even though we are miles apart, we have so much in common. Sending love and light to you and especially Miss Cindy.

I am using the same type clips to attach my tomatoes to my cattle panel this year. They work very well. My tomatoes are doing very well this year too. I planted one Cherokee Purple plant this year for the first time because so many people say they are great. But it seems to be struggling. The leaves are looking pitiful, the edges are kind of curling and the tomatoes on the plant don’t look that great either. Hopefully they will perk up and produce some good tomatoes for me. Last year I planted a second planting of tomatoes in August. I planted them in 5 gallon buckets and then moved them inside my greenhouse when the cold weather came. I was eating fresh tomatoes in December!!

Tipper, I grow Everglades Tomatoes, also producing an abundance of very small tomatoes with amazing flavor. Aside from snacking by the handful as i harvest them, I rinse them, take the tops off, and lay them out in a single layer on a pan, and freeze them. When they are solid I transfer them to a gallon zip bag. They keep well frozen, and are an easy and awesome addition for soups, stews and salads, don't have to do anything but let them thaw out.

Here's a recipe for green tomatoes: slice them about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Dredge in flour. Fry in butter on both side till crisp. When almost done, sprinkle some brown sugar on them, and let the sugar caramelize in the butter. Then add some heavy cream, and heat it all up together. Salt and pepper. I'm telling you, this dish is delicious, and more than the sum of it's parts.

I love watching all your videos, especially garden ones. We used to have two big gardens and loved working them and harvesting all the wonderful vegetables. My husband passed away, so I have a porch garden with a couple tomatoes (Mr. Stripey, my favorite) and a couple peppers and sweet peppers. I love garden food, it’s the best!

Fascinating watching you pruning your tomato plants in the garden, and also your knowledge of the plants, suckers, etc., I didn’t know about any of that. We learn something new every day!! It must be so rewarding to actually grow your own food, and no pesticides used, it is organic. My Father loved botany, and I’ve inherited his love of plants, and fascination with them, but you and your husband are experts, I didn’t know about the things you have talked about and shown in this video. Fascinating!! 🍅😊

Poor Matt! Tipper you better fry him up some green maters! I love fried green tomatoes so much I could get foundered on them like Granny did on green beans and peas when she was a little girl. I've seen lots of haze in the atmosphere here in southwestern West Virginia and I didn't even know what was causing it at first. I'm a good bit farther north than y'all so I noticed it last week and it's still lingering around. Still sending up prayers for Miss Cindy.🙏

If you want a good organic fertilizer for your tomatoes and peppers, the next time you go to Menard's get you a 25# bag of "Chicken Poo" fertilizer. You can add it anytime and without having to worry about burning. Menard's is the only big box store that sells it. I got three bags yesterday at $10.99 per bag. I put it around my tomatoes and peppers about every three to four weeks. The NPK is 2-4-3.

I grow Romas for making sauce and ketchup and pizza sauce. I love, love Cherokee Purple, and I also grow a patio tomato in pots on my patio. I usually plant 25-30 tomato plants, I like Mr. Wyche's, and for cherry tomatos, I like Sungolds.

Would like for the two of you to know how much I enjoy your videos. My family is from the areas that you're in. I get homesick for my family (just about all the older ones are gone). Years ago my family came north for work and I'm the first generation not born there. I love to see and hear all of you. Keep up the good work.

Youre great together. 😊🙏 I love to grow Cherokee tomatoes too. I just discovered them about 6 years ago. They are delicious. I love my tomato sandwiches! Nothing better. Have to have light bread. I'm from Chicago and deal with grocery stores. You undoubtedly pity me for that experience. I can accept that. I enjoy your presentations because I can learn from others, taking time to consider that I could have been born to your community. It might have been a good experience. In the world of cooking, I copied your heirloom recipe for corn bread. I also noted one of your recipes for biscuits. You're a good teacher. Thanks. Owen Son of Herman

Those are nice, little clips! Dad never trimmed them. We tried both ways. I think trimming might bring on a better crop. I miss having the land to garden, but we had to get somewhere cooler, for my health's sake. We're still so blessed. Thank You, LORD, for plants -- especially tomatoes.

Your lovely garden gives me hope for ours! North Mississippi here and a new place. The land is just red dirt. Hopefully our attempt at amendment and mulching will help in the future! If I crave tomatoes in the winter, even on a salad, I sometimes just buy a can of diced tomatoes and drain them and use them. Surprising how good they are and close to fresh. Much better than those from the produce dept! Our favorite is Cherokee Purple too! And our tomatoes are doing great! Ate our first two last night! And my nasturtiums are doing lovely and bringing me such joy! I planted several colors and sizes! Thank you! My husband just loves Matt's humor! 😜

Grew 'Matt's Wild Cherry' last year. Wouldn't bother doing it again. Considered a 'currant tomato', the fruit is too small to bother with (for me), and wild the plant certainly is. Rather just plant a regular cherry tomato, like 'Chocolate Cherry' or 'Black Cherry'. You should try 'Paul Robeson' tomato. One of my favorites. I grow this one both in a pot and also in the ground. Another keeper is 'Striped Roman'; grow these every year. I don't de-sucker my tomatoes. I think people over do it, and then get sunscald on the fruit. I made circular cages out of rebar, and they last a long time - only problem is you have to store them somewhere, but I just put them into the garden overwinter. Gives the birds something to rest on.

I agree, super-market tomatoes are not worth buying. I hold out until I can have home-grown maters. My favorite to grow is brandywine. They are so big a juicy for mater sandwiches and it’s the most resilient variety I’ve grown here in North west GA. Oh and San marzanos for paste tomato have done so well for me…they are prolific! Thank you two for sharing!

Bees n hornets, uhg lol Cherokee Purple are my absolute faves! Tried them once and that was it, now I always grow them! I grow lots of smaller ones too. I tried a bunch of the "bumblebees" pink/purple, etc and they are really good and sungold. Will always grow those now. I hate I missed you guys at the book signing in Roanoke yesterday, was not feeling well but still ordered the book! And thanks for mentioning the gem and mineral show, I wasn't aware it was in our area and I got to go and got some really cool things! LOVE your videos! Have a great growing season! :) (*Also, Imma try rooting the suckers for more and I've grown in cages, up stakes, etc and did grown them on the ground with straw underneath and had more that year than I knew what to do with! When I have room I do that, they produce so much more!

When Matt said the chickens were flying up it reminded me of my Daddy. He always went to bed early because he had to go to work so early in the mornings. We would all be sitting around talking not thinking about going to bed & Daddy would say “well, you fellers can sit up all night if you want to, but I’m “fixing to fly up.” My grandkids wouldn’t have a clue what that meant this day & time. I love listening to you all talk. It’s like I’ve had a visit back home.
