Actually the reason they only ate oysters in months that ended in ‘R’ was because in the warmer months there was “Red Algae” that was poisonous. Now the oysters are farm raised and we no longer have that concern. Thought you might want to know. 🙂

My family in West Virginia always had oyster stew on Christmas Eve. My mom continued the tradition. I like the warm milky broth but never liked the oysters themselves. Believe it or not, Campbell's used to make a great canned oyster stew that tasted like mommas. Just add a can of milk and lots of pepper. I made it often but only ate the broth. They quit making it several years ago. Sad. Tipper, you make all of us feel like we are part of your family. Thank you for sharing your life, family and ways with us.

As an Irish Catholic, I was always told we weren't allowed to eat meat the eve before a religious holiday. So we ate a fish stew. Apparently they carried the tradition to America but used oysters. It's our family tradition and we love it! We also make it the exact way Matt does. Personally, I like a dash of Frank's Red Hot in mine.

I'm 76 & when I was maybe 14 or younger our neighbors made oyster stew. Not sure where they were from, could have been from down south with their accent. I think hers was milk & cream, butter oysters, pepper then to her bowl she would add some canned tomatoes. Don't know if she used woschestershire or not. Many yrs later When I was older I started making it so found a recipe. It was melt butter in pot,cut up some celery & brown, add woschestershire sauce then add oyster liquid & oysters, when oysters start to curl add milk & cream til hot, black pepper & salt to taste. Sometimes I would add a spoonful of canned tomatoes to one bowl of mine. I would eat crackers with it. Not sure if I started having a reaction to oysters but one morning after eating it I had a terrible headache,my husband said "it was probably those oysters they'll kill you"! I haven't eaten any in awhile, but mine was always just the canned. My oldest brother developed an allergy to shellfish then later my youngest brother became allergic.

It's funny how ya'll do oyster stew for Christmas Eve. Or family does it for New years Eve. Now, the R months are correct however, growing up with generations of fishermen, the reason behind the R months for oysters were because the water was cooler and in the cooler months the oysters weren't as muddy or gritty on the inside. The oyster was sweeter and cleaner. I love that allot of our Florida traditions align with those from Appalachia. I just love your family and your channel. Thank you so very much! I don't remember a lot about what we ate. I remember sitting in front of the fire place Christmas morning warming my toes and drinking hot chocolate while waiting for the rest of the family to wake up and arrive. I also loved going out to hunt the tree. We had family friends who grew them. Then decorating the tree some of the decorations were older than my dad. We made a lot of the decorations too. No store bought tinsel for us.

I haven’t heard about oyster stew in ages. Last time we heard it was from my late father in law. Glad you all had a good Christmas.

I really really enjoyed this video and the 100 year one. I liked the bumble bees and all the flowers I've never seen before. Thank you for generously allowing us to walk in your footsteps and get a feeling of what our kin got to experience. They wondered about us in the future and we wonder about them in the past. May God bless you and America, the land that we love.
