Happy Birthday Keith! That's a great chuck! I ordered a R8 collet chuck with my Precision Matthew's lathe last year December. Though I knew it was on backorder, PM was glad to take my money up front with no promise dates. I felt the chuck was at a fair price for the quality so I proceeded with the order. It just arrived last week!

Not sure if you mentioned it, but for posterity, it's important that the inner faces of the back plate and chuck have clearance in them so that the chuck is only making contact on the register and outer flange. I only mention this because someone might have a cheap chinesium back plate with a lot of runout or you are making your own and it's easy to miss that you've taken a thou or 2 more off the register than the depth you have so you end up tightening up to the inner face instead.

Many happy returns from here downunder. Thanks heaps for this one. I think I’m going to try & copy your Chuck lifting “cradle” device, as this has inspired me to have a go, in order to make, 3 & 4 Jaw, and Collet Chuck swaps easier for me. Can I ask why you didn’t just use the lifting eye supplied with the Chuck? I’ll still need to make one because mine didn’t come with a lifting eye but just curious why you didn’t use yours is all. Can I also ask if you think the Pratt Burnered Collet Chucks are worth the $4.5K sh!tsvillian pacific micro pesos they ask for them down here or would a $500 Cheap & Cheerful Chinese one off Evilbay be good enough for a retired hobbyist like myself. $4.5k is half what I paid for the lathe new, it seems a little over the top to me. 🤷♂️ Much appreciated. 👍👍👍🇦🇺

The chuck registration diameter to backplate is up to the manufactures discretion. You can't mismatch chucks and backplates and expect them to fit. You buy the chuck and backplate as an assembly. Should have known that after 50 years?
