Referring to Americans moving to another country, specifically in Europe, Asia or Africa. Our ancestors moved here from these countries, for the same reasons that you mentioned. Why Americans are moving out of the United States, I call this reverse immigration. Going back to Europe, whether it's Great Britain, Spain, Germany, France etc. Right now it's just a slow drip out of the faucet. Coming a year or two, alot of Americans are going to find out. Trump and the Republican party, had broken the United States.

Celebrities, like everyone else, have the right to make the decisions that are best for them. They don't owe anyone an explanation. As far as staying to 'fight' for your country, that's a personal choice too. Sometimes though, depending on the situation, you have to get out while you can. Staying can cost you your life.

When you get to a point where you don't feel like you belong, are safe, or your values align with the majority of your country you have to decide what quality of life you want and where that is best achieved. As will I and my partner.... and as I have decided to leave, more and more reasons to do so come to mind including gun violence, increasing homelessness along with increasing crime - folks go into a store and simply walk out with merchandise without paying - and nobody stops them. Corporations have decided that it is cheaper/safer to just let the criminals go unchallenged. More and more merchandise is being displayed in glass cabinets under lock and key to mitigate theft; this requires a shopper to ring a bell to summon a clerk, who then unlocks the case and put your item in a LOCKED plastic box... sometimes they are required to escort you to the checkout stand. How about our "disease management system" (aka healthcare) - most physicians (save for Functional Medical practitioners) do not care if you are "well"/ their goal is to mitigate symptoms via drugs/surgery, frequently causing additional negative symptoms along the way (that's okay - we have LOTS of drugs!) So many more reasons why the U.S. is no longer an attractive place for me to live.

Kristin, re: stay and fight. Name one country, empire or kingdom in human history that rose to greatness, declined to the point the US is today, then rose back to greatness again. There are none. Once a nation declines like we have, there’s no returning to greatness. We have all the wealth, etc., but the US has lost its luster in many other ways. We are terrible compared to 40-50 years ago. I don’t even recognize my own country anymore.😢 If people want to leave and can afford it, that’s their business, not anyone else’s. Great video.

@cjoylabelle3 күн бұрын
@@wandab3843 Yes, things were better, people weren’t as divisive. Thanksgiving was an uneventful holiday for the most part. Political BS was not top of mind. There was more solidarity amongst US citizens. We had for the most part similar views and concerns. Life was more about day-to-day living, progressing at work, family life, education, and having fun. I’m not saying it was perfect. Of course there were evils and people living on the fringes of society. But in general the concerns of the day were way less polarizing than they are today. Now, top of mind for most US citizens is immigration, sexuality concerns, and, of course with inflation, financial survival. The rich have gotten so much richer taking more and more of the world's financial pie so to speak, that it has left the rest of us wondering why it is now so hard to get by and who is to blame. Since 1979 in the US, average wage growth has decelerated sharply, with the biggest declines in wage growth at the bottom and the middle. Google it. The wealthy powers that be have deployed their tactics to distract us from their greedy thievery by making the less well off (over 99% of the US population) fight amongst ourselves. It’s unfortunately a tell as old as time when you look at the history of many other nations. The plutocrats are winning and who knows what’s in store for the rest of us with the emergence of AI and robotics. The US is now going to start experiencing what many in the rest of the world have been experiencing. Google dictatorship tactics. It’s a sad time for the US and humanity.

I don't feel guilty for leaving at this critical time for our democracy. I can still vote from abroad, write to my congress person, volunteer and I can still impact political change. One thing to keep in mind is that tax residency is based on where you spend the majority of your time. If you spend more than 183 days in a foreign country, you'll still have to file a US tax return, but you might also be considered a tax resident of that foreign country. I've been fighting "the man" since I started the first Earth Club at my high school in 1978. Both my husband and I worked our whole lives for environmental and social justice with my husband being an elected politician for 16 years. After working my butt off and sending recurring donations again in this last election, I'm done. My husband passed away this year from cancer at 66 and I just don't want to spend my remaining years in an environment of fear, hate and guns. While I love California - I'm headed to Costa Rica. I can easily get permanent residency in Costa Rica because I have a pension. Also, I have an Irish passport and; my grown daughter has an Irish passport as well. We may head to Europe eventually to be with family - who knows? We are not wealthy, but I believe it will take decades for the USA to recover from what's to come, if it does at all. Trump's reelection left me hopeless. I don't want to live in a country that doesn't consider women to be equal citizens (never mind all they other types of people that will be targeted) and is pumping out greenhouse gasses as fast as they can make them. I just want to see the beauty of the world one more time before we burn the whole thing to cinders.

Kristin, what I like most about this video is the commentary and perspective you offer. I realize you measure your words and you take care to avoid delving into your own personal social and political ideology - and of course I understand your reasons for that. Still, the information you do choose to share has value nonetheless and I’m sure your audience finds it very helpful. I know I do. As for the celebrities who move abroad, or, for that matter, for others as well, I would never presume to sit in judgment of their decision. Everyone has their own motives, their own stage of life, and their own burdens to bear. Their motives may be about economics, or about health, or about life style, or about human rights, justice, and liberty. You point this out yourself. It’s so easy to sit in our armchair and pass judgment on what other people do. It’s so easy to have all the “answers” for other people. For my part, I have worked in nonprofit organizations, and I have done volunteer work as well. But I take no bows for this. We each have our own gifts and contributions to make. We all play a part in shaping the communities and societies in which we live. If someone feels a need to cut their losses and focus on themselves and their own well-being, they have my full support and encouragement. I don’t think of them as selfish in the least. None of us is made of steel, and sometimes we need to step back and focus on our own health and that of our family and friends. My only advice to people who move abroad is to go with an open mind, free of expectations, and to recognize that you will begin this new chapter of your life as a guest in another culture. I would tell them to leave any swagger and bravado behind. Learn the local language, customs, and traditions as well as you can. Engage with the locals and be friendly and respectful. There is no utopia. There are pros and cons to all countries - even if not in equal measure. The best we can do is try to select a place that is a good match for our way of life and our values. Identify your deal-breakers in advance, and then choose from among the countries that pass that test. Finding a good country and culture is not unlike finding a good life partner. You look for a compatibility of interests and outlook. You share what you have in common, and you respect the ways in which you are different. Also, don’t burn your bridges. Do your best to keep your options open because even as today you may undertake the monumental decision to move abroad, you may want at some point to return to the country of your birth. Kristin - you’re the best. Thank you so much for this video and for your full body of work. You are an inspiration. -Jeff M

It is going on all over the world, Political parties represent interests not citizens anymore. In the US, being the richest country in the world, it is more obvious because most of the wealth of the economy ends up in the 1% wealthy elite and the standards of living decline steadily for the rest of the American citizens. The standards of living statistics and the Gini index are there to see it. In Europe we had total admiration for the American society in the 60s, the African American rights movements, the folk singers singing about the injustices of American society (We could relate to many of those in Europe), the incredible opposition to the Vietnam war. My question is for the American people, Where did all that spirit go?.

When you live in a country as big as the USA, and every direction you go, you run into other Americans, with just about the same history, and language, it would only make sense to move abroad once you’re retired, situation capable, or financially able to live on a continent where you can travel shorter distances, to other countries, and have a totally different experience, with different cultures, languages, foods and a way of life. Millionaires who migrated in 2022, 122k. 128k this year projected. The countries were Malta, Italy, Portugal, and Greece.

I don't think rich celebs would find it difficult to get citizenship in another country. I'd imagine you just pay the money and take a test. Am I wrong?
@kitty_s234563 күн бұрын
It depends on the country. For countries with golden visas or citizenship by investment, you'll have to pay the investment and/ or buy property, then wait for the legal stuff/ bureaucracy until they issue your visa or citizenship papers. In the meantime, the celeb can go there as a tourist. Stay there for the max time allowed for tourists then country-hop. If you have lots of $$€€££, it's easier.

In the examples discussed, 180 days and 90 days, is this the maximum per year or per border crossing? In other words, if I entered Spain and spent two months and then slipped over the border into Portugal and spent a week there before returning to Spain, would I be limited to one month or would the 90 day clock start again?
@kitty_s234563 күн бұрын
It's the total number of days in the Schengen Area. In your example, if you spent 60 days in Spain then 20 days in Portugal, then if you decide to return to Spain you can only stay there for 10 more days. Ideally, make it 9 or 8 days so that you don't max out the number of days because sometimes SHTF. Then you'll have to fly out to a non-Schengen country (example Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, etc) and stay there for at least 90 days. Then you can return to the Schengen area for another 90 (or 89) days.

@@grntchstrmdws you're welcome. That's why if you don't have a work permit/ residency or retirement visa, you can't stay for long in many countries where you're not a citizen. In most countries, foreigners can't work if on tourist visa. Exceptions are Albania and Georgia (the country) where US citizens can stay for 1 year on a tourist visa. Caution re: Georgia, they recently voted a pro-Russia/ Putin leader. Many Russians also went there to escape conscription, increasing the price for rental properties.

Thank you for pointing out the negative impact on the local economy. I am very interested in moving abroad, and quite aware of the rush of western individuals moving into places and making the economy unlivable for locals. And investors from other countries using the golden visa leading to driving up housing prices. Celebrity or not it is something to be aware of. If you want to move to another country you should be aware of the economic impact and support local as much as possible. Rent from a local family not an out of country landlord who has driven up rental prices. Shop at local stores and cafes as much as possible. Get involved with local charities, etc. We are considering all of that as we get closer to potentially being able to move.

As in the military and civilian work I lived, worked, studied, and some vacation in 48 different countries. I was offered a position in Germany but my kids were in Junior high so I turned it down. I left the US as a working class joe and didn't have a ton of money saved. If you get things like an occupational shortage/skilled worker visa then you have a job lined up when you get there and don't need a ton of money. Also citizenship by descent is really not that expensive. It does cost a bit, but way cheaper than other immigration options and if you spread that cost out over the roughly 2 years it can take to get citizenship, it's not bad at all.

Thank you for your video. The statement toward the end regarding wanting to enjoy your retirement and 'golden years' was a welcome addition. I've spent the last 40 yrs fighting for LGBTQi rights in this country only to now find that they are most likely going to be taken away by a far right court. I've fought for women's rights including the right to terminate a pregnancy and bodily autonomy as well as immigrant rights and the rights of all people who live in this country. I'm tired! It would be nice if the Millenials took up a little of the mantle and started to exert their power, but the internet and video games, smart phones and apathy have taken over. I say leaving the US and letting them understand the reality of how a democracy can work or be taken away would do them a world of good. Why should I stay and spend the money I've made, saved and set aside for what was supposed to be a calmer time in my life supporting the lazy people who want it all handed to them? Leaving is the only way I know to maintain my sanity.
