The Back To Black sound was literally Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings sonically mixed w some 60’s girl groups and soul. She herself would probably tell you yeah, I was influenced by Sharon Jones. Celeste is a true raw talent too. She’s an amazing artist and if you fail to hear it because of your Amy biased idk what to tell you. Even in her visuals she’s so interesting. Amy would never do videos or visuals like this. Really take it Celeste, she’s so good. I promise.

I already know that Amy was a phenom, what you need to see is past your bias that other artists, especially BLACK artists can be just as great as Amy, especially if they were inspired by artists Amy herself listened too. I’m a songwriter, I’ve been working with Andra Day, whom people often times compare to Amy as well, who also used the Dap Kong’s on her albums along with Raphael Saadiq and the Roots (all artists Amy worshipped fyi) we are firstly influenced by Billie Holiday. Andra is literally playing Billie Holiday in a film out next month. If you see past your bias of a white woman doing soul/jazz you’ll see the bigger picture. Amy was a meteoric talent, no one is taking that away from her. She died a legend, but belittling the efforts of actual black musicians making black music is pure erasure. Soul, Jazz, Rock and Blues amongst so many other styles and genres all originate from black artists. It is erasure to think only Amy could make music in a genre worthy of praise without being reduced to just emulating Amy. Amy would LOVE Celeste. That is a promise.
