I really like it. Almost bought one for my 1x12" but went for the Jensen Raptor 100 as it was cheaper and less abrasive sounding based on demos.

I put a Redback in my Marshall JVM215 (50W 1x12" combo) and I sold all my other valve combos.
@K707OR302 ай бұрын
This was my guess. Redback sounds so much better.
@nunninkav2 ай бұрын
A = V30 is a scooped sound, which is why people end up using it with a 6l6 amp, even more scoop and bass, but then they need a tube screamer or Metal Zone to re-boost the mids for lead tracks. B = the red series which always seem to win the high gain "shoot outs" becasue they have a sick midrange that really brings the guitar to the front of the mix and therefore is the "lead guitarist" choice. If I am playing clean and dirty I would want a cream back, they can get fizzy with high gain so if I am all high gain lead I would use reds.
@grungeman27452 ай бұрын
I liked B better in this comparison. However the v30 sounds good and can be found for cheap used due to their popularity. Ive gotten a couple made in UK v30s in used amps without them even being listed as having the speaker replaced.

That 4k spike is so well balanced with the low end in the Redback, once you EQ it out the speaker loses its soul.

Speakers are very personal/subjective, that's why I don't like saying there are bad speakers, maybe speakers in the wrong place or with the wrong person. Glad you are liking the redback, it's a really useful speaker.

Thanks mate, it's always nice to hear kind words like that. Speakers are a strange thing to listen to sometimes, I find my mood determines how much I like a speaker too, and they are very context heavy. Thanks again for watching.
@Phil.Goodwin2 ай бұрын
I really like the Redback, it doesn't seem to have anything weird going on in the mids like a lot of speakers. It can sound pretty dark sometimes so I think it makes a great option to mix with other speakers in a 2x12 or 4x12. Ballsy too.
@needsLITHIUM2 ай бұрын
Redbacks are my new favorite speaker. Mic it with an e609, e906, or B906 on the cap/cone boundary and a vocal mic or end address instrument mic on the middle of the cone, off axis, in a rough approximation of the Fredman technique. It partially cancels that 4 kHz harshness, while retaining enough to give it some bite. I like it with 5150 III/Iconic EL34, high gain Marshalloids, Orange, and Laney amps.

@NINEWALKING2 ай бұрын
V type is a hidden gem for amplifiers that are top heavy and spiked. It’s voiced to sound vintage like but with less top end. It has that typical Celestion middle range I like. It mixes good with a bit scooped speakers and most of the heavy magnet speakers.

by itself, the Redback is an absolute beast for something like Stoner Rock, Sludge and Doom Metal, whereas the V30 definitely complements the treble rolloff.
@nunninkav2 ай бұрын
exactly, if you are the Rythm guitarist for chug metal, this has too much mids and will bury everything else in the mix. if you play lead high gain, the red backs are better.

Im gonna pair these up in a 4x12 with two V30's on top and two Redbacks in the bottom row. What I like about the Redbacks is thats it takes a while before they start distorting. They can handle pretty much anything you throw at them

I LOVE the red series for high gain leads, it is so front of the mix and aggressive, while not abrasive. I like the 4k spike it makes it sound angrier, if you want to notch it just use the V30 which is a scooped mids speaker. if I have a 1 x12 and I play all high gain leads, this would be my speaker. If I was more diverse I would use a creamback as they sound gorgeous clean.

I've never been a fan but don't dislike them. Just that roloff. I have a spair of vintage SRO 12s that do that as well, and just want to recone them with a smaller dustcap but then the value would plummet. Good voice but a touch blanketty. Might match great with a marshall though.

@ZillaCabs Hello, I'm looking for a vintage sounding metal speaker (think of the 80's)...I had bad luck with v30's + Jcm800 as it was too bright and harsh. Now I'm looking for a darker and smoother tone. What do you think it was used on Barry Goudreau's "Dreams", "Piece of mind" by Iron Maiden or "The skull" by Trouble? Another similar tone would be the on "Never neverland" by Annihilator. Thanks 🙂

@andrewbecker37002 ай бұрын
The Celestion Redback would be limited by itself. But mixed with Greenbacks or Creambacks, depending on how easy you want breakup to come in? You could really dial in a cab proper with some experimenting. You'd almost certainly find the perfect balance of frequencies and power handling for any situation. V30's sound honky, hollow, and cheap.
@NINEWALKING2 ай бұрын
To be honest Redback was big surprise for me. I actually like how it sounds especially with little bit less gain than in this video. Sadly I do need it have it at home currently. To be honest that notching in PP makes it sound ordinary. It loses its character. Loses exact thing that makes it different. I think with so many new speakers launches back then I forgot about the Redback. Creamback speakers just took all of the focus.

sounds like random close mic positionning. so many ways to get "the right sound" out of even the most bland speaker, before pre-amp, eq & compression, find the right mic for the job & take the time to position properly. blend in another as needed (or not). there's no point in guessing which is which; can the performer make it work - yes or no ?

It's definitely not random mic positioning, I am sure there's a better placement for the mics on the Redback but that is subjective and would have introduced more inconsistencies/bias. Nolly owns GGD, he spends half his life micing gear. We talked through the plan of action, all the inconsistencies, biases to try and avoid and went from there. These tests are never 100% fair but there was nothing random here. Plus a lot of people preferred the Redback.
