Celestron EdgeHD compared to the Classic C8

In this video I will try to illustrate the similarities as well as the differences between the classic C8 and the EdgeHD 800.
I decided to buy the EdgeHD 8" when I saw one offered on a local telescope second hand market. It was a good deal and in this video I hope to show that it certainly has its benefits.
There are better reducers for the classic C8 available as the original Celestron 0.63x reducer/flattener I show in this video. In native focal length though, the EdgeHD is flat as well, whereas the C8 shows field curvature. It is not that apparent though when shooting with a cropped sensor as I have in the ASI294MC Pro.
Thanks to @erfmufn Dylan O'Donnell for your help ;)
No ST4 cables or eyepieces were hurt in the making of this video...

Nice informative video! As a note, fastar is available on all new celestron sct (edge and non-edge) and Starizona offers a conversion kit for the older sct. I agree that hyperstar is awesome :). Looking forward your video on collimation with the tri-Bahtinov mask. Seems like an improvement over the conventional method via the Fresnel disk.
@KopLamp
@KopLamp 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't know how to make the old SCT (according to chips in the original fork mount dating from 1997) able to use faststar... The secondary seems to be an integral part of the corrector plate. But yes, I did hear about the option, but I intentionally left it out of the video to not over-complicate things.

Hi, great and very entertaining video - you have a new subscriber 😃 Question: when shooting with the C8 vs Edge C8 and with or without reducers, did you adjust the gains on the ZWO294? Just asking, as the stars looked less “pointed” with the reducers (even less with the /6.3) and I was wondering is this could also be due to a slight over-exposure - as of course, you will concentrate more light with the reducer, especially with the 6.3.
@KopLamp
@KopLamp 2 жыл бұрын
No, I always have the gain on 120. This is unity gain, where the noise characteristic of the camera is optimal (according to spec)

Nice job and really liked this! Any thoughts on the edge "lossing" some intensity because of the optical correction in the tube; there are some extra pieces of glass to go through. Reflection at least some from additional lens even though they are coated lenses. Etc
@KopLamp
@KopLamp 2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t looked into this in detail. Only at native focal length this can be evaluated and both scopes performed equally from my perspective. I think it is not noticeable to have less light intensity. Regarding reflections, I don’t think it is an issue as the lens is deep within the baffle tube.
@offraed6156
@offraed6156 Жыл бұрын
Yes, theoretically you can get a small amount of light loss due to non perfect transmission at lens surfaces. Is it noticable viewing or when imaging? Probably not. American SCTs are variable due to manufacturing tolerances. This much overlooked truth is responsible for many users ascribing errors in the images as due to design differences, when really a particular telescope has not been figured correctly. Lower order spherical aberration and slightly rough mirror surfaces are the usual culprits. I have tested hundreds of them.

Feel bad for Jupiter rules. He seems so agree. Missing the whole point of most of us taking astro-photos. It is about the fun. Only a few of us are professionals. The rest do it for the joy. To open up a fits file and turn it into a color photo. Wow that is what astrophotography is for most of us. If you have the money to put a telescope in space, fine but for the rest we do what we can afford. And we do it with joy.

It has no discernable effect. You can clean it, but I never bothered. It is not in focus, so you don't see it. It probably accounts for a tiny loss in contrast. Look up the "mcdonald telescope incident" on Google and be amazed how much damage a telescope can endure without (big) issues.

I know I'm not exaggerating when I say that this belongs up there with such cinematic achievements as Kubrick's 2001 or Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Dylan O'Donnell has never been more existential. Plaudits and kudos notwithstanding, it's great to see you acknowledge how the EdgeHD SCTs are a triple threat when you can add the hardware and a bucket of cash or credit. I got one and I'm glad I did. Like any good, well made machine they are multi-taskers and I have always enjoyed reading FB and forum scribblings contesting same. Maybe one day someone will make a complete telescope set that's provides the buyer and user with all they will need, or at least close to that. Such as a finder scope with matching scope for guiding beside it, quality upper and lower dovetail bars, focus mask as part of the scope, quality eyepieces at least 3 & a good Barlow, adapters of various sizes so you can attach different cameras and more. Sort of what Meade did years ago with their RX400 model were their folks set around and hashed out what would really make a great scope.

One of my next video's will probably be about me messing up mounting an EAF (autofocus) on the EdgeHD. Got me frustrated at first, but then I found my mistake and fixed it. A typical example of a video subject I think more people will benefit from.

The telescope mount you see in this video is the iOptron CEM40. It allows the telescope to stay aimed at celestial bodies indeed. There are many adapters available that allow a smartphone to photograph / film through an eyepiece. I have a Easypic Universal Smartphone Adapter which works well. Celestron also has one called the NexYZ adapter. Seems a good one too.

Good morning to you. Interesting video. I am interested in buying myself a C9.25" EDGE HD using a 2" Focuser from the company Star-Light-Instrument for SC, to do observations, but also occasionally with the two Nikon D800 and Z8 I have, do some photography as well. Some friends recommend the C9.25" XLT for making observations. But I have an AP-Traveler 105mm, used to having maximum sharpness, some friends, recommend me, also for making observations, the C9.25" EDGE HD. What do you think, which of the two instruments do you recommend? For making observations, do I need to buy the 2"-BackFocus system from Star-Light-Instrument or use without it? I would be very happy to receive your answer. I have a complete set of accessories for practising Astro CCD, however, I find it very difficult and complex. That is why I will sell the Traveler, and then buy a SC C925" Edge HD or XLT. What do you think? Thank you for your professional help. Bye. A
@KopLamp
@KopLamp 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting on my video! Since posting this video I have heard many people advising the 9.25" over the 8" Celestron. I have also heard people state that in case of wanting to shoot astrophotography with a reduced focal length, the flattener/reducers from Starizona on a non-Edge SCT are just as good (if not better) than an EdgeHD. The XLT is a bit lighter than the EdgeHD and it is also a huge amount cheaper. At the shop where I buy all my gear, the 9.25 XLT costs 2195 euros whereas the 9.25 EdgeHD costs 3375 euros. To me the only situation where the EdgeHD would outperform the XLT is in its native focal length. I am not a visual observer myself, so I have very little insight on which focuser to use. The stock focuser does have a potential difficulty in regard to mirror-flop as moving the focus is actually moving the mirror back and forth. Having a separate focuser on the visual back can resolve that, but that will have issues of its own. It can also be bought as an upgrade later when mirror-flop becomes annoying to you (or don't buy it if you get used to it, like I did).

@@KopLamp I thank you for your very precise comment. I know the problem with the SC when focusing. In the 95', before I bought my Astro Physics Traveler 105, I had many negative experiences with the MEADE LX200, at that time they were not the MEADEs of today like ACF, which they also recommended to me. However many people say that the EDGE HD, are superior to the Meade ACF. Personally, I have a friend on Facebook, who uses a MEADE 12" ACF, which does a lot of planetary, but also solar shooting, using a 2"-Back Focus system to focus. As far as he explained to me, he set the primary mirror at about half position, then focuses with the back focus system. He has never reported any problems. At the moment, I'm still using the Traveler, but as soon as I can after selling the new, stationary AP1100 mount, I'll buy the C9.25". Have you ever tried astro photography from the primary of your C11" E.HD? How come you decided to buy the C11" E.HD and not the C9.25"? I think perhaps, since I will be doing more observing, I'd better buy the C11" E.HD instead of the C9.25". Only though, the field flattener, it's more inside type as for the C8" E.HD, and I don't know if that's a good decision. OK. I greet you cordially from northern Switzerland.
@KopLamp
@KopLamp 6 ай бұрын
Let me start by saying I don't own a C11 but a 9.25" EdgeHD at the moment. In the video it was still the EdgeHD 8, but I had an oportunity to upgrade for a very good price (not the one I posted earlier). You can find a video about the upgrade on my channel too. At the observatory where I do volunteer work they had a Meade LX200 ACF 16". It was a beast, but I never liked the images it produced. Recently they've sold it and purchased a EdgeHD 14" but as it is awaiting delivery the observatory has a EdgeHD 11" on loan from the shop. Fantastic scope! When shooting planetary you don't actually need the flat field of an EdgeHD as you are mostly only working with a very small object which you'll try to keep away from the edges of the field of view anyway. Collimating a scope that size can be tricky though and because of the weight of the mirror, even slewing from one object to the other can throw collimation off. When doing planetary, you'll probably want the best of the best collimation. I've heard people say that for this reason they tend to slew to a planet. Collimate the scope. Lock the mirror. And then fine adjust the focus with an extra focuser on the visual back of the scope. I have no experience with this as I hardly do any planetary and am not that precise with collimation anyway (still have to collimate the 9.25 after having it several months).

One thing you need to add is, that for imaging or viewing small objects like planets, double stars and very small DSO, any object on-axis that sits within the diffraction limited field, there is no benefit to the Edge HD over the standard SCT in terms of image quality. Also these telescope are variable quality wise, so it becomes difficult to judge optical quality of design, unless you know the figure on the optics and the wavefront error. No two SCTs are exactly the same.

Exactly! I have old NexStar 8i SE. Absolute killer! Made in USA. Bit any Edge up to 9-1/4 and on par with many 11” once. Edge problem is collimation. First, it is very tough to achieve. Second, de-focusing stars depending on direction. Third, doesn’t keep collimation well.

Two observations: 1- some C8 can be turned into Hyperstars, 2- you used the worst possible reducer/ flattener i.e. the Celestron model. Starizona (the Hyperstar developpers) sell an SCT corrector that gives fantastic results much better than the Celestron reducer/flattener.

This one of those "what do you mean by field flattener"? questions. SCTs have off-axis coma, so simply introducing coma correction at f/6.3 will improve the off-axis image but it doesn't flatten the field. Celestron have always been coy about this. When asked they have a "marketing" answer, not a technical one. Telescopes can display field curvature and distortion, correcting either one improves the off-axis image, but only a field free of field curvature, coma, astigmatism and distortion can be called a flat field in a meaningful way to an astronomer. You can have an instrument which has correction for field curvature, but it can still have coma. Manufacturers will claim their design is flat field, astronomers will still see coma in star images toward the edge of the field.

Loved your Dylan O'Donnell, was a laugh, but no Aussie accent. Anyway I think it is a waste of money going from an ordinary 8" to the HD series, unless your shooting photos at native f10 or Hyperstar. Otherwise there is not advantage. You can get a stararizona reducer, which will give the same performance if your using a reducer as the HD series Visually unless you have the best eyepieces you won't get the benefit of the HD series out of cheaper eyepieces which have their own aberrations. Oh and the newer C8, I think can be converted to the hyperstar, the 9.25 SCT can anyway. Buying the 8" HD, I feel if you are not using it for hyperstar or reducer you wasted your money, when, in fact could have got the 9.25 standard cheaper and with stararizona reducer flattened will perform just as well as the HD series, and if you got the 9.25 standard and the stararizona reducer would still work out cheaper then the 8" HD. I almost got the 8" HD, buy when I found out the 9.25 was $200 cheaper was a no brainer, bigger aperture for less money, made more sense. If I wanted the same performance as the HD, just get the starizona as you should be using a reducer anyway. The reducer for the HD series is not only far more costly the either the standard one or stararizona reducer, its very heavy and boy is it expensive. Aldo those screws that hold the mirror, if you forget to loosen them before focusing you may damage your focusing mechanism, etc? Also the 9.25 inch is known to have the best mirror as its f2.2, nor f2 as the other ones. It is a legend among the SCT telescopes and have the reputation of having the better mirror. As far as I can see, the only advantage the HD series has is going hyperstar. For planetary photography does not even matter as you centre the planet anyway. Personally I think you wasted your money, as the 9.25 standard is cheaper and a better figured mirror. Your only advantage is hyperstar. Also your images did not see that hugh an issue, with either. Afterall for years until recently everyone was happy with the standard SCT, hyperstar star is were it really matters. And yes if I was planning on getting an HD, it's wasted unless going to hyperstar. But then again would maybe better just getting the RASA. I think the HD series is over rated, when you can get a decent field flattener comb reducer that works ad well as the HD series. There is always ways around these issues

It is specifically at the native focal length that the Classic C8 is falling behind on the EdgeHD. When using the telescope with a reducer/flattener, I think the classic C8 is just as good. Especially when used with a quality reducer/flattener. That corrector plate was dirty indeed. Still, it is not something you'll notice when imaging.
