Celestron Powerseeker 70az review

Excellent review! Just picked up this exact telescope from the pawn shop for $20! Wasnt even looking for a scope, but saw it and nabbed it. Its pretty rough but views just fine. Had to take it apart and clean lenses and diagonal. Finderscope was broke off, no eyepiece either. Worth the $20 as far as im concerned!

This was so helpful. I received one of these as a gift, but I’ve struggled to use it. Last summer I managed to get Jupiter in view after SO much wrangling and struggle, but it was worth it. I couldn’t resolve any of its cloud bands, but the Galilean moons were unmistakable. I knew exactly what I was looking at. What I desperately need advice on is exactly what configuration/setup I need to get any possibly better view. I am specifically using it to spy Jupiter and Saturn when they’re out, if that helps. I’ve no idea how far out or in the focuser should be, if I need the diagonal at all, or if that will just make things more complicated, and what eyepieces are best for those two specific objects. I’m also finding that, when I take it out in summer, it’s just getting MURDERED with condensation build-up. Is there a particular trick or technique to help with that, short of just letting it sit outside for a bit after coming out of the AC? I’ve got some nice microfiber cloth for eyeglasses, so I don’t imagine I’ll need anything more than that? I’m glad it’s not a lemon; it’s just the eyepieces that it came with. Any advice you can give would be so unbelievably appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope to hear from you.

First off, congrats in viewing Saturn and Jupiter! They are breathtaking no matter how many times you view them. So about the condensation, you should put the telescope outside a while before you go out to view. If you are worried about it getting taken, put it in your car. Try not to use anything to wipe the glass off if you can avoid it. The diagonal absolutely should be used as the telescope was designed for that to be in place. As for how far out the focuser should be, however far it takes to get the object you are looking at in the best focus possible. As for eyepieces, which ones do you have already? The 20mm and 4mm? I would probably suggest about a 12mm amzn.to/3a0g5PG or 9mm amzn.to/3ke7EoS depending on how your 20mm with a barlow works out. If your 20mm + barlow is pretty sharp, then try the 9mm, if it is a little fuzzy then go for the 12mm. Remember that a sharp small view is better than a blurry large view. Clear skies!

I put a long, home made, black paper dew shield held on by rubber bands. It is very lightweight and also blocks stray neighborhood lights. You can spray paint it to make it more water resistant.

I fix these up to give away to employees' kids. One thing I modify is, because the tension screw of the azimuth bearing tightens against plastic, I remove the azimuth bearing from the tripod and cut a sheet of aluminium from a can and slip it in the space around the plastic bearing. It also reduces play in the mount.

Very nice scope review Allan - thoroughly enjoyed it! Good to see that your most used scope is your "smaller" 90mm 'frac on a sturdy EQ (looks like my Meade LXD 500A mount). I also have a 90mm 'frac (Astromaster 90), but my most used scopes the past 5 yrs has been my two 4.5" F/7.9 Newts. Easier to set up and use (standing up). I also own some bigger scopes (5" and 6" Newts), but more time consuming to set up and use.

When i was super little my dad gave me a bushnell model 78-9512, we managed to get the moon into some semblance of focus maybe twice, were never able to get anything else in view of the main lens, about three days ago i managed to find the poor old thing under a pile of dirt under the stairs, got it out, and spent the last 3 days in my backyard trying to see something, two days ago i managed to get a good look at the moon, today with a lot of time, effort and a lethal dose of stubbornness i managed to get sirius into focus with super cheap 5mm and a terrible barlow, it looked like a laser pointer zipping across the sky because the focuser tube is loose and the piece that holds the eyepiece is missing a screw so i have to hold it in place by hand, the finder scope is completely impossible to align with the main scope and the tripod falls apart every five seconds but its the most fun I've had since the pandemic started so as soon as i can save up enough money I'm gonna buy one of these, they are a bit more expensive in mexico but it must be a lot more fun to be able to look at the night sky with a telescope that doesn't actively fight you

This telescope is awesome! One of the best I have ever gotten I saw the moon through my telescope and i saw some craters i looked at Jupiter and i was shocked and i looked at saturn and it was so amazing! This telescope is so good i decided to start a youtube channel about astronomy! But When I try to get picture of Jupiter through my phone it just a blurry color mess does anyone have suggestion on how i can fix this problem?

Marcos Astronomy try turning off the auto focus on your phone camera. If you have a iPhone you can hold the screen down and it will come up and tell you it’s locked. You can google this to show you how to do it. Also my daughter likes changing my pictures and names around so think nothing of either one especially the Bieber picture lol

Take a video, (5sec long) send it to your computer, use pipp software (its free) stack the images and voila

What is a Barlow ?

A Barlow is a device that allows you to “multiply” the apparent magnification of your eyepiece. Let’s say you have a 10mm eyepiece and it gives you the apparent magnification of 100x with your telescope. You could use a 2x Barlow to make that 200x. It goes into your focuser right before the eyepiece and then the eyepiece is inserted into the Barlow. Barlows come in many different magnification factors such as 1.5x, 2x, 3x, 4x, etc. Be aware that using any Barlow will make the image blurrier and darker, the higher the magnification, the worse this will be. While having a higher power eyepiece will always provide a better image, many people find Barlows very useful and are great for beginners to help them figure out what eyepieces they really need.

I bought it on sale with three eye pieces, 4, 10, 20mm about four years ago. First time tried to view Saturn and Jupiter just a couple of days ago. Saw the ring and Jupiter's settelites. Though 4mm eyepiece is difficult to use.

Unfortunately what you can see varies massively depending on your seeing conditions. Someone who lives in downtown New York will have a hard time seeing anything other than the moon whereas if you live in Lajitas, Texas you can see the Milky Way standing right next to a street light.

Refractors typically view everything upside down. You can fix that with an erect image prism like amzn.to/3RkwH9z from Celestron. I think that scope comes with a 4mm which never gives good views. I would try something like a reasonable 12mm amzn.to/3RhrFe0 . Remember that more magnification can make the image blurry so you have to find the balance between sharpness and magnification. My guess is that a 12mm will be very close to an excellent balance.

The celestron does not require any sort of online alignment to see any moons or planets. There is a dial near the lens that you can turn to adjust what your seeing if it's blurry or bright. It is double sided. It doesn't work at day sadly.

Astromaster 70az is better in my opinion. It comes with better eyepieces and a sturdier and heavier tripod. I've used a powerseeker 70az. It is very light, but quite wobbly and comes with less decent eyepieces. The powerseeker shakes a lot at high magnification. Just make sure the astromaster comes with an actual finder scope that can be separated from the telescope tube instead of the permanently mounted version. The batteries, you can find in any hardware/stationery store.

Yes, you need at least a refractor with ED glass to remove most CA, the cheaper the refractor, typically the more the CA. Of course, you have coma in reflectors so there are tradeoffs with any optical design.

@@Fifispatular Absolutely! There is nothing at all wrong with that scope and it is a great investment. If you decide you really love the hobby and want more, then you can move up. If not, then you can stay where you are or resell your 70az and be out very little money.

Unfortunately, what you are seeing is chromatic aberration. It is the major flaw of refracting telescopes. You can buy refractors that have corrective lenses to fix this problem, but they are not cheap.
