A few years ago, I created a helpful concept about image magnification. Take the square root of the advertised power and we will have what can be called the linear magnification - such as how many times wider the subject will appear. For example, the subject as seen through a 16 power device will appear a 4 times wider. With a 100 power device, the subject will appear as 10 times wider.

You are an awesome person with nice skill of teaching others about optics and binoculars. I am very happy that there are people like you. I have had a camera to shoot photos of birds but I turned to binoculars and observing more than making photos - I sold my Canon Powershot SX60 HS and bought Celestron-Nature DX ED 8x42 binoculars.

Thank you. I know most people will want binoculars that see everything from the birds to the moon. Basically, the magnification of binoculars is a line of being out and about bird watching vs having a very high end magnification that is heavy and will need the help of a tripod to stay focused and deliver an image that is not blurred.

As to handshake, being as you put so well, no longer young, I use a photographers walking pole for support and balence so that if I stop to see someting interesting I just click the bino's on. Handshake reduced instantly. Best Wishes.McIntyre. Scotland.

Great info and guide, surprised you did not touch on the low light advantage of a wider lens, guess one can´t touch on everything. Also surprised you did not mention the many other uses for special options, compass, range finding re sailing and the many other fields that people want good optics for. I am juggling between bird watching and the longer view range for tracking, so thought I would need a zoon feature and a low weight option? Maybe I should go for one of those small scopes instead.

Are we getting college credit for this? 😂 I thought I knew a lot about binoculars but I learned a couple more things today explaining the degrees of field of view and magnification to objective lens ratios was helpful. Explaining the advantages of 3 dimensional detail from porro prism Binos vs roof prism was helpful. Is that based on the prisms themselves or the spacing of the objective lenses? I appreciate your time with these videos and sharing. Thank you!

15X70 (have wide view). Giant Binoculars are easy to handle and in strong arms binoculars are not shaking in case of 70mm objective lenses. Just install good eye guards and practice how to hold it.

That’s kinda like asking which is better, Chevy or Ford. Both Companies have different price ranges. $250. On up. More money better bino as a rule of thumb. That’s new prices. I personally own about 30 pair of binoculars.
