There are songs that hit you right in the gut,whatever age you are and how many times you play em.This is one of then and all you want to do is listen to the story while holding your head in your hands.Just magical and soul wrenching all rolled into one.Janis Ian is unbeatable but Celine commands respect also.I hope all of you that identified with this song,later found out just how beautiful you are.

The sadness is is that this song is nearly 50 years old and is still as relevant today, if not more. I’m glad I didn’t have to contend with social media when I was seventeen as the lyrics of this song pretty much summed up my teenage years. And yes I am a man but I can still relate to not fitting in

Muchas mentes cerradas aquí...! No evolucionan, no admiten cambios... No existían grabaciones, Internet? Ni en los mas osados sueños...

When Janice Ian put this track down so exquisitely all those years ago it was so perfect that nobody could do it justice and this version proves just that. A tribute maybe but some tracks just need to be left alone to stand for all time as works of pure genius.

I think a stellar rendition of a beautiful, emotive song. She very much did the song justice. Her genius was in part retaining the original arrangement. Don't gild the lily. Thank you, Celine. And, yes, Celine may not have been the "ugly duckling girl" but we've all known rejection and emotional bullying. I think that part of what makes this song relatable.
@limer43302 жыл бұрын
I see a lot of people MOANING that this song is better left alone because Janis does it the best. Well of course she did. That's why Celine is doing it. She's also keeping it alive. This song has been mostly forgotten, no matter how beautiful it is.

This was a song I related to so well. I was that girl who Janis sang of. Janis's version is so very poignant and is forever etched in my heart. I enjoyed Celine's version. She is an artist who understands lyrics and the meaning behind them as well as what is essential for a song. She understands her instrument - when to be subtle and when to blow you away. This is one of the marks of a great artist. I give her credit. But the original is unrivaled.

@lcd2201 Actually, she has always been mocked for her image, even now. At seventeen she was still considered a little girl and still had the nickname of "vampire". She did not fix her teeth until she was about 20 and even then she was critised by the public for her appearance. She didn't have a boyfriend until she was 20, and that was the man she married, so she has never really been in the "dating scene". She therefore knows what it's like to feel ugly and feel left out of the dating scene.

Everyone knows on the planet, music industry that Celine is the first who receive the best songs as an artist.Producers know what Celine is capable of. We should hold in our mind. She is not singing because of money, fame or gammies. She is doing an art, she is making difference. Difference for humans. And the most impressiv is, she grows as a person in her mind. All the song, interviews, shows she is doing is her inner world. She is the artist that will be talked after more then 200 years!!

Janis Ian about Celine's version in her own words: "I would caution anyone against judging Celine Dion's version if you haven't already listened closely to it - or watched the KZbin video of her doing it during the pre-Grammys a few years ago.. First, if you haven't heard it, how can you judge? Just because you don't like her other work? I find almost all Ken Follett's work boring and irritating - but I think his "Pillars of the Earth" is one of the great books of my generation. Second, it's the best cover version of the song I've ever heard. I say that without reservation. She brings an unexpected delicacy to it, a sense of truthfulness that's very real, and from what I'm told, the reaction to her understated singing of it on the Grammy show went a long way toward setting the tone for her current act, which I plan to see as soon as her Vegas performances and my schedule coincide. It's a very ramped down, more "adult" show from what I understand. The woman has an astonishing voice. She has treated my song with more care and consideration than most would. I always admired her as a performer, the same way I admire Bette Midler as a performer. However, after watching her perform "At Seventeen", I also admire her as a singer. That's just my two cents."

The only criticism is that the song seemed to be at the tempo throughout. It would have capture the emotion of the piece if it started out slowly, picking up after the first chorus or the second verse. Not a criticism, only a thought.

Being a seventeen year old girl, and knowing many others like myself, i've yet to meet a young woman in her teens who wouldn't be able to relate to this song in some way. Clearly Celine understands/relates to the meaning in some way as well, otherwise I doubt she would have tried her best to do it justice. Judge not her reasons for singing this song, as you'll never know them yourself.

This song is best sung in a somber fashion, as it has always been, and Celine nailed it. I think most people are disappointed here because she simply cannot pull-off the self-deprecating part of the song where she considers herself homely. She's simply too beautiful!

Before Celine "made it" she was just another struggling singer doing gigs where ever, she was in Auckland, NZ, doing a small show, a reporter was despatched to interview her, he came back with "just another run of the mill singer who won't go far" i laugh every time i see Celine because they showed the interview a few years later, with the reporters comments. It is better to remain silent and let people think you're stupid, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. PS the reporter did say sorry.
