Highlights from Broadway Backwards 2015 included Chicago's "six merry murderesses" were represented in a sexy, all-male version of "Cell Block Tango" featuring Joshua Buscher-West, Marty Lawson, Alfie Parker Jr., Waldemar Quinones-Villanueva, Alex Ringler and Ryan Steele.
Broadway Backwards was directed, written and choregraphed by Robert Bartley, Backwards' creator.
An exuberant, exhilarating and emotional evening of performances by Broadway's best made for a poignant celebration of the 10th anniversary of Broadway Backwards.
The 2015 edition of the event, held March 9, raised a record $466,717 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center (The Center).
Mary-Mitchell Campbell was music supervisor and Tim Rosser music director. Adam Roberts served as associate choreographer with lighting design by Ryan O’Gara, costume design by Bernadette Banner and sound design by Matthew Kraus. The production stage manager was Peter Lawrence.

These actors were so charismatic and funny! I kind of wished there were some backup singers for when they dance towards the end because their voices go up and down in volume (understandable given the crazy moves they were doing). But it's surprising how well this song fits with male singers! An entertaining performance.

@bearowl4101 Жыл бұрын
@@JewishJeff839 Woah, woah, there's no need for all that. You don't know if I have a life or talent, and both my parents love me quite a bit. It seems to me that you got personally offended by my one small critique (which was also sandwiched by a lot of praise since I loved the performance overall. If you got confused by me saying "crazy moves", I meant that in a good way) and decided to take it out on me. I understand being sensitive (I am too) but it's kind of something that has to be worked on to survive the entertainment industry. I apologise for giving the critique unprompted, but my compliment sandwich was a lot less harsh than a lot of other comments people make about art. I'm sure you've heard way worse things from people in the industry. A lot of consumers of media can be assholes (look at what Star Wars fans say about the actors in the film). I also feel that you're missing the point of what a Karen is. Karens push antivaxxer propaganda, yell at minimum wage workers or threaten to call the cops on a black person for standing in a park. Giving a small criticism amongst a bunch of praise in a KZbin comment (which is where you go to post feedback, the entire point of having a comments section) is not a Karen-like behaviour, though you are welcome to disagree. You shouldn't dilute the meaning of the term to mean 'someone I don't like'.

I saw Chicago just last week, and I find it interesting how this gives a different feel. Overall, I think their overexaggerated movements is well placed, mostly the "Spread Eagle" part because it helps give a bit more visual than what was offered in the play I saw. I mean we know it was about sex, the whole thing is about sex and murder, but it adds a bit more flavor and makes it more engaging. I really liked how they interacted with each other, the caressing of the cheeks during that scene is another part that makes it more engaging. What was really different was the "Not Guilty" person. In the rendition I saw it was a tearful plea for innocence; in this one, it felt more playful, almost like a throwaway "Ha! I did it, but I'm not guilty" what with his dancing around and a large smile almost as if he could get away with an insanity plea. IDK I just find it interesting that the same play could be received so differently.

moonrose100 Late to the party here. But re: “Not guilty” ... the way he played it definitely seemed off to me. But I’ve heard of other companies playing it similarly-like the person is guilty and kinda mockingly says “not guilty” at the end or something like that. Kinda defeats the purpose later on when the character is the only one to die. I just always assumed it was meant to be played as though they were in fact innocent. This guy’s playful performance irks me..
@lumiineer
@lumiineer 4 жыл бұрын
@@drewkolar I suppose in context of the whole play, the part should be more serious. But here, where it's a singular performance of the song, it's more effective and contributes to the lighthearted and humorous nature of the performance to have the part played in a more joking manner.

Really the only line that doesn't work quite as well in this gay version is "... and Irving". Of course, a lot of people think it's worse to be cheated on with someone of their own gender, or he could just know Irving and not like him, so the line still works, but it doesn't have quite the same comedic punch. Everything else works really well, no lyric changes needed! (Also, I have a sneaking suspicion this song wouldn't seem quite so charming if it was six men singing about how they killed their wives...)

Vicky Pierce Yeaaaaaaah, no. The reference is from The Book of Mormon. Look up "Hello" from The Book of Mormon and you'll see. The door bell is a key component of the song. Also, I've seen Chicago a decent handful of times and there's no part with a door bell and a Mormon.
