Wild stuff, I appreciate learning how the UK uses their radios they really say a lot we don't here in the states lol
@EvDelen10 күн бұрын
8:38 By definition there wouldn't be anything on the tower, it's a passive system that would use the existing emission as a radio source while the proprietary CELLDAR portable station would be use the reflections of that radio source off of the tracked object to produce something analogous to RADAR. It's kind of clever actually. All you need to know is the precise position and azimuth of the emitter, which you can access off of public filings, and some trigonometry. It would be particularly useful in an adversarial military situation. This may account for some of the concerns that governments have has around certain countries mobile phone infrastructure, since it *could* be repurposed like this.

Great video, Lewis! Roke Manor Research has done some really excellent work. At one point in time they had an excellent clock for precision timing (I think sub nanosecond) using TDOA method for multilateration emitter location systems. If I remember correctly it was sold to Indra Sistemas. The more precise the clock, the higher the precision of location. Light (and radio waves) travel 30cm in a nanosecond. When combining results from multiple sensors in 3D an aim may be to achieve 1m precision so the smaller the error of the individual sensors, the better the precision of the combined result. All the best, Rob in Switzerland

Other GPS systems also access the same systems to improve accuracy and even gauge traffic flow etc. Motorcyclists also use a sudden stop system built into their phones to indicate a crash and make emergency calls in case they are unconscious.

Edward Snowden recomends turning as much stuff off as possible and removing your SIM unless you need to make contact. He's at the extreme end of course but he also has some actual lnowledge of who knows what. And it's not just phones we invading our privacy. Remember 'smart' TV's listen. Cars with connection for emergencies or OTA updates also send location and can listen. There are dash cams that face both ways, have GPS and mics and their apps allow the cars owner to see video feed, hear sound and see positional/speed data. Nest smoke alarms have microphones. Teslas have 9 cameras for their 'sentry mode' but, as they are part of Musks empire (yes, he of 'X' - that even if you don't have an account can track your internet use providing the sites you visit have an 'X in' somewhere), lets just assume they are mobile CCTV stations and seeing as though Zuckerberg has his glasses out in the open, proven to allow facial recogniton (there are some creepy videos of how quick you can pull up the life history of starngers just by looking at them, all data handed to you on the HUD), we need to assume Elon has also allowed facial recogniton on his cars. We have lost almost all privacy. And people mostly lap it up. It can make life easier or more fun in certain circumstances (apparently) but when a wrong'un comes into power and realises what they can do... it'll be too late. oh, and lets not forget the social media apps, such as whatsapp and tiktok, that encourage people to take selfies and apply filters... have you seen the grids they use? - exactly the same as facial recogniton software uses. So people, especially children, are scanning their faces for these companies. Insane.

First I've heard of this ever happening ..... However I've thought for a while that the push for 5G had an ulterior motive and that a "celldar" system was that motive. From what I've read about the frequency that a 5G mast is capable of its similar to a military radar system.
@StreakyP9 күн бұрын
As you said interest in passive bistatic radar has been around for years & mobile phones is no exception however the TDD (time delay duplex) on modern systems where base and user transmit on the same frequency (and the beam steering & frequency reuse) makes the DSP needed to get it to work much more complex. Anything with a repetitive signal can be used for bistatic passive radar, the Frame pulse on old analogue TV was ideal for this and during the cold war before the Berlin wall came down there was interest in slapping a receiver on a roof in west Berlin (or any other embassies elsewhere) to listen to reflections of the big Berlin TV transmitter to have an aircraft watching radar deep in enemy territory. Going back in history one of the earliest successful passive bistatic radars was Der Klein Heidelberg parasit which was a ww2 German receiving system that actually used our British chain home radar pulses against us (called the parasite as it fed off our system)

Hardly a new concept, the original tests for radar involved no specific transmitter, but listening for a BBC radio signal bounced back by the target. Similar has been experimented on using wifi routers too for very close range mapping and tracking. Funny really, death rays became radar, and now "deadly" cell signals have become radar too. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Well there might have been another effect. See fisherman and other boaters have noted that the cellar phones range when contacting shore has been declining year over year for quite some time. 🤔 What’s been happening is that as the numbers of phones have increased the number of towers has increased and the cells have gotten smaller. 🤷♂️ I can’t say for certain that this would make the technology unusable but I would strongly suspect that implementation would become substantially more complex. Bounced signals would get weaker and would have to be sorted out from a more complicated soup of signals at differing power levels and directions. It doesn’t sound like something a computer could not do but it doesn’t sound particularly simple or easy. 💁 That said, what would not be particularly difficult to do would be to track the actual transmissions of the phones themselves. As long as the subject is willingly carrying a transmitter it’s no particular trick to track that and sorting that signal from background would be simple. Not so long ago students who vandalized a Highschool at night were easily identified by the automatic logins that their cellphones made on the schools WiFi . 🤦♂️

radar does no identify the target whereas cell systems calculate the location of a phone to decide which tower to use and hand off to. your phone is always answering pings from the towers. This info can be used to track you or count how many cars are at a stop lite, folks call it GPS but its not, just measures time between two or more towers and you can only be in one place with those times.

The Doppler charts remind a bit of meteor scatter that the SDR people can see, i think you mentioned it as astronomic particle. The advantage of using more and smaller transmitters rather than the one big DVB-T station might be more accurate altitude information because of the larger elevation angle (as there is always a cell tower underneath the object not too far away) and more triangulations.

Worries of ‘big brother’ mass surveillance always need to be considered against the context of the financing, backend data processing/storage requirements and project management capabilities. I’ve serious doubts they would likely not even come close to financing, let alone organising complete deployment. …they can’t even successfully project manage many IT system deployments from the likes of Crapita and Fujitscrew. The deployment of any technology is subject to cost vs benefit and the reality is the government couldn’t care less about the average citizens movements for the exponential increased cost and complexometer score that mass surveillance would require. It’s not to say that deployment of a Celldar systems doesn’t exist in places and if so most likely is specifically targeted around certain places…like that Andy Kirby’s house 😂

Sounds generally like a good idea to me. However as always with these things, just because it can be done does not then mean the expenditure to do it makes sense. When you factor in the amount of processing required for a large number of targets. And there would be a large number of targets you would need to process all of that before you could even think about your target of interest. It would then become an expensive tool where that are already other tools that can provide similar capability all be it with less accuracy. People worry far too much about big brother whilst not worrying about what our adversaries such as Russia and China are doing all the time.
