Quick hint: energy from the NADH and FADH2 is harnessed as the electrons pull hydrogen ions into the intermembrane space and create a concentration difference. It's like compressing air. The electrons lose potential energy in this process, finally ending their transport chain by combining with oxygen to produce H20. The hydrogen ions then travel through "turbine" proteins as they work down the concentration gradient, kind of like water flowing through a dam. The potential energy of the hydrogen ions is captured as it turns a turbine (the turbine produces ATP) when flowing down the concentration gradient. Basically, the electrons expend their potential energy by compressing hydrogen ions in the intermembrane space. The hydrogen ions then flow down their concentration gradient (they diffuse) and turn an ATP producing turbine in the process. The turbine is the smallest rotary motor known to mankind.
