Thank you I really appreciate it! There is most definitely hemicellulose being extracted by the alkaline solution along side with the lignin. Lignin is shown to be soluble in alkaline solutions. I don’t believe NaOH reacts with cellulose chemically, although I know at low temperatures NaOH in a aqueous solution can cause cellulose fibres to swell

I found the finer to be quite weak just due to the length of it, there are definitely steps you could to to spin it though, it’s better for making Kraft paper though. The bleaching was just so it would come out white it is not nessicary

It’s not impossible. You can use NaOCl but it will be fairly yellowish. Hydrogen peroxide is recommended

Yes you can. You may have to do additional lignan extractions but it should still work. You will have to add the fiber in an organic solvent and raise the pH and react the cellulose with mono chloroacetic acid

Your saying in the video that the NaOH destroys the lignin. Is it really destroyed or is it just being dissolved by the NaOH? Could the lignin be extracted from the water/NaOH?

That was a poor choice of words on my part. What I meant is it dissolves the lignin. It can be precipitated out when the pH is lowered

@@tjkoch408 hmm I would try reacting with Conc HCl or Drop-wise as to not create a thermal runaway. It should lower the pH enough to form a lignin PPT then you can filter and wash with water of a neutral pH. That should get rid of the water soluble Salts formed leaving you with lignin

I heated it for 4 hours at 90°C. But this all depends on the wood you are using. I used black spruce i think. But if you are working with hardwoods. This could take alot longer. So 4 hours is not a definite time but for me it was long enough to destroy most of the lignin.

It could be down to the wood your using. Hardwood tends to be more difficult to extract the lignan from compared to a softwood like spruce or pine. You can potentially use a higher molarity mixture of NaOH. Or maybe let it sit in the solution for longer. But with me i just pulled the wood apart by hand then blended until it became a pulp

To a degree. The oxidization may destroy some lignan but i am not entirely sure. However using a alkali hydroxide is preferred. I couldent find much more information about other extraction techniques that do not require a strong base or high heats. H2O2 is preferred for the bleaching process though.

Hmm good question. I’d say you could but I wouldn’t know how strong the fibers would be compared to fibres derived from cotton or something like that. Also the fibres tend to be quite short but I do feel like it’s entirely possible. I know nothing about spinning though, so take my word with a grain of salt

I mean it should work either way. Typically you want to add the solute to the solvent and not the other way around. This is especially the case for strong bases like NaOH where if you add it the other way it can cause the water to boil and spit

Yes it does! I blended to get the fibres as fine as possible but as long as it is soaked for long enough the structure is structurally comprimised enough for it to be easily pulled apart.

There are more polysaccharides found in peels such as pectin which is soluble at a high pH. Aswell as oils found in the peel which can be removed quite easily. So I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

Im not certain on how to do it. It should be able to separate out in the same way as starch. Starch is slightly soluble at high temperatures so you may be able to separate that way. But That’s just a hypothesis

Sorry im not too sure. You want to have a 50% H2SO4 solution. And the ratio of cellulose to 50/50 H2SO4 is 1:25 It all depends on the consentration of H2SO4 you are starting with to get 100ml of 50% H2SO4. A concentrated HCl solution should also work with a similar ratio of cellulose to HCl

In my case i heated it for 4 hour at approximately 90°C but that isn't a definite time and heat for all woods. So the greatest indicator would be when the wood gets very soft and fiborus.

It can ne pretty difficult. There are solvents that will desolve cellulose but they will either not do it efficiently or they will not result on a good product. You would be better converting it into cellulose acetate

I am glad you enjoyed! I used 90° heat when destroying the lignin. I boiled for 4 hours. I found that was enough to get rid of a good majority of lignan so i could pull apart the fibers and so i could blend them to shorten the fiber length. Also you can contact me at fluxcompression@protonmail.com

Clothing may be a bit hard😂 but I tried making paper with it to a mild success. The problem comes with minimal adhesion between fibres, so it rips fairly easily. I may give it another shot sometime though
