This young lady just melts my heart every time she sings. A multi instrumentalist, a dancer and a voice of an angel. How can one person be blessed with so much talent? If ever there was a candidate for a "global superstar"...you are listening to her now:

My grandmother was Winnifred Ryan of Upperchurch, a direct descendant of Edmund Ryan, Eamonn an Chnoic, so I suppose we are related.

@@johnmcgrath1929 it is written that he was married to Mary Leahy….. my grandmother and her sisters passed this on to our generation… hard one to prove / disprove…. My Ancestory DNA has matched me with Ryans from Upperchurch..

I live near where he was killed and his head was buried... we grew up with lots of stories of ned of the hill... but I never heard he was married. A funny story of a recent relative was that when he was going to England years ago his father told him that he should be a proud Irishman... that he was related to ned of the hill... and a few years ago he told me this I laughed because his father forgot to tell him that he was also related to the fellow that killed him... as he took refuge in his cousins house for the night. Not knowing that the bounty had been removed from neds head - after ned did some good deed in rescuing the local magistrates daughter from assault by some other outlaws ) and his cousin killed him and took his head into Cashel to get the bounty only to be told that there was no longer and reward. The cousin carried it back near home but threw it over a ditch. Where legend has it that it was buried and his body was buried in Doon. Funny we never heard much more on what ever happened to his killer.

@@johnmcgrath1929 I think his cousins name was Dwyer… apparently he wrote the song Sean Bean Bocht about his wife..Mary… there is speculation that he fought at the Battle of the Boyne.. which was only a skirmish compared to Battle of Aughrim. My grandmother was a Ryan from Charleville. … her grandfather came from Shronel Co Tipp…her grandfather Michael Ryan was killed in the Fenian Rebellion of 1867… not named in the names in the attack on Kilmallock but I found a reference to him being fined for singing anti English songs in 1867… history is fascinating.

Oh dark is the evening and silent the hour Oh who is that minstrel by yon shady tower Whose harp is so tenderly touching with skill Oh who could it be but young Ned of the Hill And he sings, "Lady love, will you come with me now Come and live merrily under the bough I'll pillow your head where the light fairies tread If you will but wed with young ned of the Hill" Young Ned of the Hill has no castle or hall No bowmen or spearmen to come at his call But one little archer of exquisite skill Has loosed a bright shaft for young Ned of the Hill It is hard to escape to this young lady's bower For high is the castle and guarded the tower But where there's a will there's always a way And young Eileen is gone with young ned of the Hill

Ireland’s Robin Hood or Dick Turpin. Not sure if he really existed. The countryside he is supposed to have operated in is as wild today as ever it was. Don’t get lost in those Tipperary hills - or his ghost will block your way -“Stand and deliver!”

@rf8365 Studied this tune and the basic sotry of it once for a folk music project. Eamonn Ryan (Ned) was an earl deposed during the time of the williamite wars (if memory serves me correctly) who allegedly became a rapparee. The folklore around him goes that he hid out in the mountains and continued fighting as a bandit, robin hood sort of stuff, good stuff. The song dates from the later 18th century, 1770s i think and I know was originally not sung in English.

@jon s ... thx for that. from my research this song seems to be one of those that will have many meanings and/or histories. it is a song that i'll be drawn to for reasons unknown. I like the name Ned for my next son due to this song and i like the stories I've read so far. i guess the idea of a Ned character is what is the best. ...so was Ned Irish, or Scottish, English?

Traditional singing is all about story telling and the listener must hear the story, Some singers like to have accompaniment and some even need it, but it must never come forward while the story is being told. It must be very much in the background while the singer is singing or better still, inaudible to the audience. Lovely singer singing a great song and good guitar playing too, but a tad too loud and competing with the storyteller.
