Thurston Dart somewhere said “Farnaby was not well trained in his art”. The brilliant way he transfers motifs between hands and keeps up the imitation is wonderful, so TD was being a bit arrogant! Lovely l.h. writing, and all brilliantly pulled off by Ms Chen who is a wonder! Brilliant, and thank you!

Not to detract from a very enjoyable performance, but I'm intrigued by the juxtaposition of a historically based, 'purely acoustic' (non-electronic) instrument with the musical score presented via a tablet. I've seen it before, many times, but it always just makes me chuckle. We insist on the superiority of wood and metal and other 'physical' elements for the construction of the instrument (no clever but fake synthesisers, please) but are OK with a composer's diligently and artistically produced composition residing in the form of electronic bits in an electronic box. Not to mention that this has completely obsoleted the noble role of the page-turner. But once again, I thoroughly enjoyed the result of the combination of instrument, 'printed page,' and competent, artistically endowed performer.
