Lore:
With the appearance of the first tanks during the Southern Corvus War, both Cetus and Corvus designed anti-tank rifles for common foot troops to use.
The first AT rifle was the Long Georgie from Cetus, a very long-barreled rifle chambered in a new bottleneck cartridge, the .308-44. This was the standard .308 bullet used by regular infantry rifles, except with a 0.44-inch diameter casing that held much more propellant. The increased velocity from the barrel length and propellant made this type of cartridge able to pierce early models of armored vehicles.
The Corvuns designed similar rifles, but as the war progressed and more armor was added to tanks, a larger caliber was needed. In the late-war stage, calibers had increased from .308 to .50-inch diameters.
During the Aquilan campaign, the Aquilan Army’s main doctrine against vehicles was anti-tank warfare. They had their own designs of anti-tank rifles with calibers up to .55-inch. However, as calibers became larger, so did the rifle. Recoil control during this era was nearly non-existent, so operators of large-caliber AT rifles were often injured by the recoil of their weapons. Aquilan AT riflemen during the war found themselves stealing pillows from homes to use as padding between their shoulder and the rifle stock.
During the Vegan and Grusan campaigns, both armies had AT rifles in calibers ranging from .50 to 20mm. These 20mm rifles were the largest AT rifles produced during the Centauran War, and were only limited to a single shot before needing to reload. As with previous large-caliber rifles, the recoil was horrendous; however, Grusan weapon manufacturers had inadvertently invented the first muzzle brakes to counter the recoil problem. This groundbreaking design would also be overlooked for almost a decade before the Antareans began incorporating it into newer weapon models during the early Riaan campaign.
As the Centauran War progressed and tanks had increasingly thicker armor, AT rifles became obsolete by the mid-1930s. Nonetheless, existing AT rifles were still actively used against lighter vehicles like trucks and armored cars. The AT rifle was largely succeeded by rocket-propelled HEAT charges and anti-tank grenades.
