For anyone who ends up going there, it would be worth while to take the 3 hour trip east to Marietta PA. If you can line it up with the Pig Iron Fest, that would probably be ideal. If not, just go to Furnace Road, park along the field on the left hand side and take a walk back into the woods. You will find a bunch of old structures where the iron ore and coal were dumped out of raised train tracks into the tops of blast furnaces. There are cisterns that carried the water for drinking, cooling equipment and running boilers for steam powered machines. You'll find the green sand spilling out of an old casting floor. The green color is from iron contamination in the silica (the reason Alsatian wine glasses have a green stem). All of the houses on that road were built by the company for it's workers to live in. The larger building standing on it's own use to be the offices of the smelter and the mansion on top of the hill on the other side of the river was where the Rockefeller of Pig Iron lived. Once smelted and cast, the iron was shipped by train to Pittsburgh and Johnstown, by truck and wagon to Intercourse and by river to the Chesapeake Bay.
