I have a thick Centipede lawn in south Florida I started the lawn from seed mainly because i was told i couldn't grow it here I owned a lawn service for about 15 years back in the day . I tried for a couple years cutting at 2 inches after all i have seen and read and yard stayed in a pitiful state we cut St Augustine here commercially at 41/2 inches . I went to 4 inches a few years ago and it is beautiful . Sometime you have to go outside the box . Those bare spots would fill in in about 6 weeks max here . I had a area were I kept a 8 by 12 trailer was bare sand sparsely sprigged it with edger trimmings in the beginning of summer no irrigation and it is completely filled in as of September .I have only used seed on initial install and sprig from my edging ever since .In the south we cut allot higher than they do north of here we have sand for soil and with the heat has to be cut tall or will fry and weeds will take over .Fungus can be a issue during the summer months here I use souther ag garden friendly fungicide to keep it at bay also gets attacked by billbugs during the dry months .

I am having a much better year this year than last. I still have a lot to learn, but for sure the more consistent mowing has helped a lot. I am still trying to get a handle on the weeds.

I just recently discovered your channel, great content. I live in Northern Florida and have a centipede lawn as well. Your backyard has gone through an amazing transformation in the last 2 years. At the end of the growing season, can you make a video summarizing all the things you did this year for your lawn? I like your lawn channel because you're not trying to sell something. Keep up the good work!

I have always heard that the best way to naturally allow a creeping grass to displace weeds is to keep it cut low, like 1" to 1-1/2" high because most weeds cannot survive that low cut like centipede and bermudagrass can. Is that true? It has worked most of the time for me, or maybe pure coincidence. I just discovered this video today. Thanks for posting!
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare

Weeds can survive almost anything LOL! You will also hear mowing low encourages weeds. But yes, mowing centipede correctly 1-2” often will encourage it to fill in and help choke out the weeds. Thanks for watching

I’m not sure what’s the takeaway. Don’t use pre emergent herbicide to spread? Not sure I’m on board. You end up with more weeds that choke the grass. You went from applying it way more than recommended to not at all. Why not try doing an application in the fall and another in late winter, as recommended? You might end up with as good or better fill in.🤔 Being in Georgia, this year unusual frequent rain definitely helped centipede grow/spread. I think Alabama got the same. I wouldn’t necessarily attribute all the success to frequent mowing and skipping on herbicides. At least you talked me out of upping my prodiamine to 3 applications. 😀

You make valid points, the weather conditions have been great this year. I think the main things for me are no preemergents in the spring/summer during growing season. I usually do a pre Em app in fall to prevent winter weeds. Haven’t decided yet if I’m going to do that this year.

Did you rake up the bare areas containing the preemergent layer to quicken the centipede's spreading process? Or did you simply let the preemergent layer break down on its own time?
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare 3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t, I just let it naturally wear off over time. I did add some bagged compost to some of the areas because they were rock hard last summer. Thanks for watching!

I have heard the same about the root pruning when it comes to the pre-emergs on Centipede. I believe I may stick with an app. this fall/winter but not in the spring once the soil temps start to rise slightly. Which pre-emerge did you find worked better one with prodiamine or one that contains dimension like Hi Yield Weed & Grass Stopper?
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare 2 жыл бұрын
I think that’s a good plan. I could not tell the difference in performance. I think dithiopyr may be a little more harsh because it can kill crabgrass at a young stage.

I’m in Louisiana and I’ve never put anything on my yard and it never fills in. Very bare and b/ of this there is room for weeds. My yard is starting to get taken over by crab grass and other types of weeds. So I don’t know if this works b/ I feel like I need to put something down to deal with all the weeds.
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare

Check out the post-emergent weed killers I recommend in the description. Also if by putting nothing down you mean no herbicides and fertilizers you may want to consider getting the Fertilome Centipede Weed & Feed 15-0-15. Or you could apply herbicide first then fertilize.

I am really digging your results my yard is very similar to yours. But I saw on your video earlier to fertilize correctly and I was waiting for you to feed into that information on fertilizing correctly. What is your deal on fertilizing or fertilize every three months with 13-13-13 or just fertilize at the beginning of the spring and that’s it.
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare 3 жыл бұрын
Check out my video called “How to fertilize Centipede Grass” and another called “Pick the right fertilizer for Centipede “ I would stay away from the 13-13-13 because of high Phosphorus. Centipede doesn’t like P. Also you typically want to let the centipede naturally wake up and fertilize in early May. Only 2-3 applications per year. Thanks for watching!

What pre M were you using? Prodiamine? Split app? Planning to do a split app this week
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare 3 жыл бұрын
I have used both Prodiamine and Dimension. Not split apps. I would typically do about 2-3 lbs per 1000 sq ft and I applied every 3-4 months in 2019 and caused a lot of damage.

I just moved to Bham and I am looking for videos for my new (to me) centipede lawn. Subscribed! Along for the ride man. Thanks for the videos. What are your thoughts on aeration?
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare 3 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thanks! Aeration is one of the best things you can do for getting water , air, nutrients down into the root zone and to alleviate compaction. I would recommend doing that in the spring after the lawn wakes up and is actively growing so it will fill in quickly. You will see a little damage to the stolons but it should recover quickly in spring (May/June)

I have HUGE dead spots. So you got it to fill in solely from mowing every 4-5 days? Did you top dress this at all with sand or topsoil? How often are you watering centipede? I definitely used pre emergent last year and this year. Will not do that anymore.
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare 7 ай бұрын
Yes I put down some peat moss. Also put down a mixture of potting soil and sand. Gently watered in (not drenched) maybe once a day or every two days. And mow consistently and stay away from prodiamine or dimension

Maybe add a little peat moss or potting soil to the area and water lightly when it needs it. Will encourage the stolons to tack down

Hi there! Bald spots due to professional treatment of weeds on Centipede Grass. 😢 Is top soil and or seed good for filling in those spots?
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare 8 ай бұрын
Top soil is usually a little too chunky. You could mix some potting soil and sand. Or peat moss. And keep the area moist every now and then but not drenched. Seeding works this time of year id recommend Tifblair centipede seed if you’re gonna do it. It’s not a fast germination however. You may have better luck just putting down those soil amendments and treat it right so the existing centipede spreads

So I’m just below you down here around PCola in Florida. I see you have moss in those bare spots as I do as well. Have you done any soil sampling for PH? I don’t really wanna waste the time to do it because I have a fairly large yard. What are your thoughts on over seeding to fill bare spots?
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare 8 ай бұрын
Yeah I’m sure it’s very acidic but my main issue is shade in the mossy areas. I have a ton of trees I’d like to trim at least if not cut down some. Ive actually never seeded centipede but may try in some spots. May is the time to do it

@CentipedeCentralLawnCare
@CentipedeCentralLawnCare Жыл бұрын
It depends on how many pounds of pre-emergent you applied per 1000 sq ft. Generally each pound of product per 1000 would last about a month. So if you did 3 lbs per 1000 it would last about 3 months
