Its not insulting asking for an estimate. Everyone is on a budget. A verbal estimate is just that an estimate. So there is no need to say I'm going to make it a ridiculously high estimate. Just give it your best guess with the understanding it maybe higher.

An estimate for the motor, yes. From there ? Motor estimate would still be padded though. Could be 3 hours in time including travel, plus parts.

There is a perception that what people don’t see (Steve picking up a motor) should be free. Part of then”time” isn’t just labor but the amount of time steve has to spend (he gets 8-12 hours ) is limited. She can pick up the motor but then he is still waiting while that is going on. I don’t know Steve’s rates but my guy ion Chicago is $90/hr. Two hours plus the motor ...easily $300. One big problem beyond understanding the simple economics is not having a basic understanding of what all is involved. Great video Steve

We keep 1860's through 1862's on all the service trucks. Each technician usually installs a couple a week. We usually don't mess with OEM unless it's warranty work

That was my condenser unit last week… the house got hot and when I went out to my condenser unit it was just buzzing and my fan wasn’t spinning. I replaced the capacitor, same issue… got the fan to spin when I pushed it along then it would stop, replaced the fan motor and now I’m chillin 😎 I feel so….. accomplished, lol My local HVAC guy wanted $175 just to come out and look at my A/C then the motor, $100, and his labor to put it in. I was looking at $500+ for everything, I did it all for about $200. BTW I live in the Nevada desert and it’s the end of summer, about 95 degrees right now… the nights were cool but the days were killer.

I do appreciate Steve’s honesty, and am trying to understand the NE culture Steve has described there. But really don’t think it would have been too difficult (and friendlier) to just say “ I’m not sure until I check with the supply house, But this could cost anywhere from $300 to $1000”. This whole adversarial conversation could have been avoided. Not bellyaching Steve, you’re a great guy and your style obviously works for you in your area and culture.

Guy bid a bath redo job... he figured a 120 dollar toilet customer wanted a1500 dollar fancy one... at install job done time..if possible let customer buy items its saner...customers think workers are free. . Did kitchen sales... customer provided appliances before job... or I provided sink... but in contract.. must be in customers home before job..

Also, if I’m paying time and materials, damn right I’m gonna helicopter. Steve seems to be an honest guy though. Unfortunately so many HVAC’ers are just crooks and criminals

Think of all the electric motors that have been made in the country over the years. But big business gave it away to China as the label on the motor says {15:30). And people wonder why people can't find a good jobs in the manufacturing area. The country seems to have outsourced most everything. Very sad

About 6 years ago was in Dallas Texas talking to a HVAC contractor asked what he charged to change out condenser fan motor $650 all day long now of course take in to consideration different sizes but thats in Texas in the Philadelphia area well Im raising my prices no wonder Im driving an 84 Suburu lol

I enjoy your videos, I’m going to assume you ran out of motors on your van.I carry different motors, condenser, evaporators, furnace, you name it. It really cuts down on time when I don’t have to run and get what I need. When I first started out I couldn’t afford to carry everything, and it’s still impossible to have everything. I don’t understand what you couldn’t give the lady and estimate on price when you take your car to a mechanic don’t you ask them about how much. Anyway, to each his own.

Cut shaft off with saws all and use a punch to knock out slug much easier

That’s how I do it. I carry a 3/4 inch deep well socket and balance the blade on top and knock it through with a 3/8 punch

redhathat I do it that way too. Milwaukee M12 hackzall and punch out the shaft. Some are so corroded and this is the only way they’ll ever come out.

All of us have not had specific part a time or two. If you expect someone to carry every single possible part on their van for every single brand of unit out there, you’re nuts. I have 2 condenser fan motors on the van to start the day. If I end up needing 3 in a day, then number 3 gets to wait for one or pay me to go get another one. Way she goes.

He put the fan direction wires in it because they had clips on them, would have been to hard to put them in the old existing casing with other wires, as the old motor didn't have those.

You want the same frame so it will mount the same way too. On some of them like the ICP units, you can get the OEM replacement and it has a plug on it.
