When Turkey was first settled around the 11th Century AD by migrating nomadic tribes from Central Asia, the role of the Livestock Guardian Dog was to accompany shepherds and their flocks to protect them from predators. So the Anatolian Shepherd Dog (Karabash) has been developed to perform this function ever since, and retained a distinct breed type.

I had an Anatolian mix (passed for full blooded) many years ago. He was amazingly self-reliant. I got very sick and taught him to help me up by allowing me to lean on him. He went far beyond his limited training, even pushing me to my feet when leaning on him was not enough.

The kennel club uk now recognises the anatolian shepherd and the kangal as two different breeds. The anatolian shepherd can be any colour so long as it has the right temperament to do the job. The kangal has to have a black mask to be a kangal. Anatolians and kangals can actually be born from the same litter of pups just so long as some of the pups have black masks then there classed as kangals. ( HOW RIDICULOUS IS THAT ) The problem is that people breeding kangals are now looking for colour instead of focusing on temperament to do a job, This sort of thing will mess the breed up.

Kennel clubs always mess up the working breeds. That is why I dislike kennel clubs and show dog companies. They are literally the same dog. Some come out tan and back while others mixed color. People who truly use these dogs for work don't care about the color.

UK recognizing the Breed is a display British Imperialism, as Turkey the nation of origin of the Anatolian Shepherd does not recognize the breed as a pure-breed. DNA studies have confirmed that Anatolian Shepherds are simply Kangal mongrelized with any and every local dog.

I love my grandpas anatolians. They didn't need any training whatsoever, they are born protectors. When I watch them for a long time it's almost like they have organized patrols and they take certain areas and turns. They will kill anything that threatens the livestock and they want to please you and love you, they will bring you dead animals as presents all the time. Something cool about them is that they usually have extra toes on a few of their paws.

That's what they're supposed to look like. Working lines need to be functional, they can't be functional when they are bred to ridiculous dimensions like the ones you see online or more and more in Turkey.

In fact, we now call it “group hug time”, because of how he comes rushing over, barking and charging, and then proceeds to jump into the hug. The CAS aka Alabai is a much more serious dog then a Antolian or Kangal. Also they get much bigger then described here. Depends what part of the world you get them from. There is a lineage in Russia they are absolute monsters. 34-38 inches & weigh up to 250+lbs.

The problem with this video is that Anatolian Shepherd is not an Anatolian Shepherd but maybe a half-blood or something. Pure-breed Anatolian Shepherds are larger and their tails curl upwards to their backs.

Oh, and for the record, Anatolian Shepherds are one of the most loyal dogs and they show nothing but love to their familes, expecially children. I know people leaving their babies to the care of these dogs, outdoors and there is not a single soul on earth to take away or harm that baby unless they kill the dog first. Suffice to say, they don't harm babies. There is not a single letter about an Anatolian Shepherd which harmed any baby. They are so intelligent that they identify small children and very patient towards them. Long story short, Anatolian Shepherd is the best dog if you live a rural life. But don't expect them to play fetch or dance for you. They are way too serious for that kind of clowning.

CAS is a serious dog and should not be played with if you need a LGD but can't handle a CAS get the Anatolian while they're not a walk in the park they're way easier to deal with and manage.

Nah, if you raise them well they aren't, just like with other dogs. They are friendly giants, my uncle has one which I'm looking after right now and he's very friendly and very cautious around small dogs, like with the big ones he just plays and wrestles around but with the small ones he knows not to play too rough. Of course, if you keep a Kangal leashed up for most of his life to a place without socializing with other dogs then it might be aggressive, so I recommend socializing it with other dogs at a young age. I don't know much about dogs so yeah. Tho during night Kangals can be very active and like bark at people that come near your territory a.k.a. your house/backyard or something, so you might want to get a Kangal not in a city but in an open place with a lot of space. If you're a farmer and need a dog to protect your sheep from predators like wolves and such then a Kangal would be perfect for you. Welp, don't take my word every dog is different of course, just raise them well without abuse then you should be fine.

alabaiCA Pyrenean Mastiff. Spanish Mastiff. Caucasian ovcarka. Alabai. Kangal. Tibetan Mastiff. To name a few flock guardians but all Mastiffs are inherently protective, you usually see it with property. I'd recomend some research mate

You are right about all of them except Tibetan Mastiff(all what we see now is a modern breed). Kangal is just a gigantic variation of Anatolian shepherd and no so many of them can be a good livestock protectors because of their giant size and the size is very important for all of those breeds what we are talking about.
