This tornado was on the ground southwest of our house doing severe damage to the farmsteads in its path. It then went back up into the cloud, passed over our house went about a mile came back down and proceeded on to Jordan destroying that town completely. I am not sure if anyone was killed, but my family considers us to be very lucky.

Bethanie the tornado that hit Parkersburg and New Hartford Iowa was an EF5 based on the new Enhanced Fujita Scale. Jared was saying the Jordan Iowa tornado was the last documented F5 tornado in Iowa based on the old scale system.

I had just graduated from high school. Remember many tornados in Ames and surrounding areas growing up, they were not uncommon, but fortunately most didn't do massive damage.

A farm family between Boone and Ames was sheltering in the basement when this twister struck their farmstead head-on. The steel bins containing shelled corn came apart and the family was pelted by swirling shelled corn while in the basement, bruising each family members face. Fortunately no one was killed other than the nearby livestock. A massive corn combine was hammered to the size of a VW bug.

Around 4:13 , wow, that thing was moving. BTW, a day later a tornado struck southern Iowa and lifted a vehicle sized object to a height of 15,000 feet. FIFTEEN THOUSAND FEET! "Mr. Tornado", the late Dr. Ted Fujita, said the Jordan, IA cyclonic tornado was the most vicious he'd yet seen. That whole two-day SYSTEM was vicious.

Remarkable footage of an F-5 tornado that astonished even Fujita. Anybody know if Iowa is still tied with Texas as the leading state(s) for recorded F-5 tornado strikes?

I saw those twisters on my tornado video classics published by The Tornado Project Online. The wedge was F5 and the smaller was f3 and was anticyclonic and the tornadoes took on unusual V-shaped paths as well. Keep the awesome vids coming:)

I remember standing out in the parking lot where I lived on the outskirts of Ames, Iowa, not knowing what to do. Funnel clouds everywhere. My friend rented a basement apartment on a farm. If she had stayed in her basement she would have been killed as a piece of farm machinery landed on her bed....the house was just slivers of wood and her VW bug was thrown into a nearby pond.

I remember this. I was in Iowa visiting my grandma for the summer this was the day before my 14th birthday and we were sitting in Grandma's kitchen having my birthday cake (early) when the sirens went off......we were in the basement for hours....we got lucky though....Cedar Falls was spared that day.
