The new Netflix series "When They See Us" is reigniting debate over how police treated the Central Park Five during the investigation into the brutal attack on a female jogger in 1989. Attorney Paul Martin joined CBSN to explain what he thought of the original case and why the system is still rigged against black and brown teens.

DNA was in its infancy and not all cops were trained on how to collect DNA at a crime scene at that time. It was also very expensive to process. Now it's commonplace for cops to bag victim's and suspected perp's hands for scratches under the fingernails, etc., but what you see on TV is really not reality. DNA isn't tested in every case, especially when tons of other evidence exists.

In the 1950's and 1960's, all of this was common across the USA. At least it was in Los Angeles, CA, You learned very young to not ever trust a cop. No matter how good you were. They could and would hang any crime they imagined onto a teenager. Take you out of school, shove you out the door at Midnight and you had to walk 10 miles to come home to an angry parent. "What did you do? They wouldn't take you out of school if you hadn't done anything". You learn really fast to never talk to a cop. No matter what.

tart70 since I have never beaten and raped a person to death, I would never admit to beating and raping a person to death. You make it seem like the men were tortured, but in reality they were just asked questions. The kids were never beaten into confessing, that’s a lie. 4 out of 5 of the guys admitted to being an accomplice to the rape on tape, with no bruises or cuts or any damage to their bodies. If they were beaten into confessing, they would be black and blue. They said that they held the jogger down and restrained her while she was raped, but didn’t rape her. The DNA test proved that she was raped but not by those guys, so their confession coincides with the evidence. They were accomplices to the rape. Also, when the raped and beaten woman woke up from her coma, 2 weeks later, she said that it was multiple people. While only one person raped her, it’s pretty clear that the others were there. This is all just leftist propaganda to make Donald Trump look bad because he spoke out against the 5.

The media played a big role as well and should also be held accountable for their lack of journalistic integrity. These days at least they say "alleged" when describing suspects (they didn't for CP5, I remember this story well as a 16 yr old in NYC when this happened). However, they are doing no better today than they did back then. When someone black/brown is in a story (whether victim or suspect or deceased), they will include the person's background going back to Kindergarten. Any small blemish and they will focus on the blemish rather than the overall story. It's all about sensationalizing stories for the almighty dollar. Smh
