Central Sweden - A Trip to the Country and its People | Nature Documentary
Watch 'Band of Bears - In the Forests of Scandinavia' here: • Band of Bears - In the...
Sweden, right up on the border with Norway, 150 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle: Here Heidi Andersson lives in a village called Ensamheten - loneliness. That's why everyone stays together, works with wood and in agriculture, and practices the same sport - arm wrestling. Heidi is an eight times world champion in this unusual sport for women and enjoys her life in "solitude".
The Baltic Sea coast in southern Lapland: Here you can find the herring delicacy surstromming, the "sour herring". And as is so often the case with specialties, opinions differ - the smell and taste are definitely unique.
Our journey then leads into the forests and swamps of Sweden. Around 400,000 moose live in the whole country. But you can hardly see them. Unless you visit Sune Häggmark. He takes care of orphaned and sick animals. Tourists have made it a business for him.
Sundborn is located in the heart of central Sweden. After a visit to the pilgrimage site for Sweden fans from all over the world - the house of the most popular Swedish painter Carl Larsson - the trip to Sweden ends with Peter Mosten. He produces birch champagne. To do this, he drills holes in the trunks and taps the birch trees with them. He presses sparkling wine from the juice according to a secret recipe. Business is booming, and so he has set himself the goal of one day bringing 50,000 liters onto the market

I'm from northern Quebec (Lac St-Jean and higher up North...) THAT looks like HOME to me. My family are bush pilots and all of my summers were spent in the boonies, where the tree line and tundra meet. Those Nordic countries are EXACTLY the kind of place I would feel happy in. -40Celcius, IF you are dressed for it, is better than a really hot and humid summer day.

Recently we got hit by an arctic blast in northern Sweden with temperatures low as -43, two weeks later it was +3 and now it's -23, strange to say the least. Summers can get pretty hot and humid but it's definitely the most unpredictable part of the year. It can literally turn from sun and fun to Bible weather with heavy rain for forty days and forty nights, winter jacket and snow during midsummer its a thing.

Some regions in Sweden, particularly in the northern parts and certain islands, have been geographically isolated, which may have limited interactions and intermarriage with external populations. As a result, these regions may have relatively lower levels of genetic admixture compared to more accessible regions.

I'm Canadian and I must say Sweden, Norway and Denmark are almost like another universe compared to Canada. Some landscapes are similar that is true but a lot is totally different. The people are also quite different compared to Canadians. Their voices were the main thing I noticed over several trips, often kinder, softer, gentler voices over there compared to here. Canada and America were both used as penal colonies, for one thing.

@@markhirstwood4190 I agree with the human aspect of North Americans. That's why I live far from everything here in Canada, because I love nature, but also to escape human mediocrity. I agree, Scandinavians are more peaceful, with softer approach and kinder people.

It is important to remember that despite regional variations, Swedish people share a common cultural and historical background and identify as part of the Swedish nation. The perception and attitudes towards immigrants can vary among individuals and are influenced by a combination of socio-cultural, political, and economic factors, among others. Public opinion towards immigrants can be shaped by various complex factors, including economic concerns, cultural differences, and social integration challenges. They are working to improve themselves.

In Sweden we call those small balconys in front of the main door: "Punchveranda". They are very common, especially in older buildings and in our "Sommarstuga" which means summer cottage. Almost every family have a Sommarstuga or relatives that have one and that is where we go to enjoy the summer vacation in the nature. :) That particular one in the documentary looks like a little punchveranda build all alone by itself(no house attached), maybe it was a little storage building before and was rebuilt to that.

In the middle of Sweden +5 to -25 is a common temperature range in the winter, in Summer +12 to +27 is common. Sometimes it can be more than -30 in winter and +30 in the Summer. Also in summer the sun never goes down. And in Winter it's dark almost the whole day. During midnight the sun is still up in the sky and it's bright. You really feel it when the seasons change here, because, everything changes. :) Summer means light and warmth and flourishing nature. Nature literally explodes with life in the spring. A lot of outdoors activity. Winter means darkness, snow and cold. A lot of outdoors activity during the hours of light. After that is the cosy period with candles lit and a fireplace burning in the house to give heat.

US / Canada are young countries where these animals are called moose - European countries are much older and here you see elk in the forests not moose. You have renamed the animal to moose - the same with football you have renamed it to soccer..

I can't help it, but it's always hilarious to hear native English speakers pronounce Swedish words. Hey, points for trying :D
