Century Arms is and always has been notorious for sketchy quality control and BOM on their products. They used to import parts kits and manufacture their own receivers. I've personally seen some that performed flawlessly, and other that suffered catastrophic failures in less than 1000 rounds.

That about sums up all the commentary. Some people have had very good experience, some very poor. It appears the poor experience is typically older rather than newer and with models other than the VSKA (not always, but most of the time).

I own both AK- and AR-platform rifles, and I've done multiple-day rifle courses with each. I don't have a bias for or against either; they both have positives and negatives. I did have a chuckle at one course with about a dozen students. Only two of us had AKs; the rest were mostly ARs, and some of them were very expensive. At least half of the 5.56 group had to come off the line at some point due to serious malfunctions. I think this was back when smaller custom shops had just gotten popular, so people were spending a lot of cash on souped-up shooting bench princesses with 10 lbs of tactical garbage stuck on for looks. I didn't win any gold medals for tightest group, but I didn't spend time at the fixit table either.

A lot of AK enthusiasts do have American AK Derangement Syndrome and do not believe redemption exists for firearm companies that once had a bad repetition. The idea that a rifle company can improve their product is completely beyond their ability to believe. Paul's presentation here is fair. Many videos like this one, showing the reliability, accuracy, and functionality of this rifle is fair. I have yet to find someone with Century Arms AK Derangement Syndrome provide current, reliable evidence that this rifle is as dysfunctional as they claim. Most their evidence is from a one off lemon, which every firearm company has one, or from obscure reddit post without quantifiable evidence, or from outdated material. That being said, this is my number one favorite Paul Harrell video.

Two points: first, hearing the opening notes of "Montage" made me literally laugh out loud. Well played! Second, a Century-import WASR-10 was my first semi-auto rifle purchase in 2009 or 2010. I take it to the range, and I keep getting failures to feed. An embarrassingly long period of investigation later, I came to realize that when the fine folks at Century built the receiver, they milled out too much material on the left side of the magazine well, so magazines were wobbling side to side under recoil and (I guess) the feedlips were getting in the way of the bolt. Now, I was a broke-ass college student who had just blown six months of disposable income on rifle, magazines, and 7.62x39, so there was NO WAY I was getting rid of the thing; it was one of the Super-Cool WASRs with the Super-Cool native front Super-Cool hand grip! You CAN'T get rid of something that Super-Cool, so I shimmed it with a couple of pieces of cereal box and some packing tape on the inside of the receiver. No more wobble, no more failures to feed, and it's been a perfectly serviceable rifle ever since. So, my position on Century: often trash, but trash that generally isn't TOO hard to fix (like a bent front sight post), and, once fixed, trash that becomes, if not a DIAMOND, at least a $20 dollar bill in the rough: not much, no, but nothing to turn your nose up at, either!

Point of clarification, WASR rifles are not built by Century itself, they are built by Cugir factory in Romania and imported to us here in the States. They are, however, or were modified by Century upon important and sometimes the magwells are janky. The sad fact is, they're leaps and bounds better than the VSKA Paul has in this video. AK Operators Union and other reputable KZbinrs have plenty of videos demonstrating this.
@tcurtisjohnson
@tcurtisjohnson 2 жыл бұрын
@@DieselDog403 What I learned at the time was that you're MOSTLY correct; some silly federal law or other requires that semi-auto firearms imported into the US after a certain date (in the 60s I THINK, but it's been a LONG time since I learned this) MUST have a certain number of US-manufactured parts, or they can't be sold. Since (at least as far as *I* know) most one-time assault rifles like AKs, CETMEs, and FALs come in as parts kits with their original receivers cut through to destroy the fun-switch parts (the full auto components that make them actual assault rifles, that is), importers that sell complete guns don't really have any choice but to make their own receivers here in the States. Unfortunately, with Century, it seems they made a habit of not getting the dimensions QUITE right... Personally, I can't speak to any of Century's other imports; I've WANTED to get my hands on a G3 or a CETME battle rifle for years, but the money and availability just never seem to line up, and a new bullpup seems to come out every time it LOOKS like they might. The curse of the incurably Super-Cool-attracted strikes again, and again, and again...

I have found through the years that it is seldom - if ever, appropriate to hate on a particular brand of anything (car, gun or otherwise). There are "lemons" in the car world as well as the gun world. I own a 1999 F-150 that has nearly 300,000 miles on it, and it still runs great, while I know guys who have had brand new ones blow out their engines or transmissions. I think Century Arms AKs are similar. Some may not run while others run flawlessly. THANK YOU for laying down a heavy blanket of CALMING COMMON SENSE on the situation! I've had my VSKA "Trooper" for a couple of years now- great rifle (Except for the triangle 'Circle 10' stock, which makes it sit WAY too low and is uncomfortable...but luckily that can be changed). The bad reputation that Century Arms AKs had comes from earlier models when they first started manufacturing their own AKs, and used a cast trunion as opposed to a forged or machined trunion. These modern ones have machined trunions made from tool steel and are great. A very reliable no-nonsense rifle.

A big issue that comes up when you're talking about practically any AK is that the AK crowd is pretty notorious for hating anything that isn't an original parts kit directly from the eastern bloc that costs just shy of a Barrett 50. I have routinely heard from AK enthusiasts that "an AK not made in Russia isn't an AK" or "any AK made in the US is garbage" and *hate* any gun KZbinrs who say anything good about them. I've seen people suddenly go from loving to hating Rob Ski from the AK Operators Union simply because the PSA AK47 passed his torture test.

Have you checked headspace after shooting the 1k rounds? From everything I've heard, the headspace tolerance can become out of spec after shooting somewhere between 1k-3k rounds. Maybe once you get to the 3k round count, you can check the headspace and show us how your rifle is holding up. Have a great day Paul. ✌️

I had a Century C39v2 and had the extractor claw break in half around 300 rounds. Replaced it with one from a Polish kit. Then at around 500 rounds all the furniture, stock and handguard, came so loose you could freely wiggle it around with your hand, then at around 1200 rounds I noticed significant premature wear on the locking lugs, and a small chip off the secondary locking shoulder. Apparently all the C39 rifles favor the secondary shoulder for some reason after talking with two other knowledgeable owners. The chipping issue is because the entire rifle is nitrided inside and out. Making the bolt and the milled receiver the same hardness and also brittle. So instead of the bolt being a wear part, the bolt and receiver clack together until one or the other breaks. The brittle nature is also why my extractor broke. Poor casting combined with nitriding. The rifle was very accurate though. Sold it for a WASR 10 and have had zero issues after multiple thousand rounds.

I have a RAS47 that cracked the front trunnion at around 600rds. There was also some very bad peening on the locking surfaces of the bolt and on the tail of course. The peening stopped when the surfaces work hardened itself and I replaced the trunnion with a forged trunnion from an amd65. The cast trunnion was a known problem by then so I didn't want century to just put another cast part in there. It has a great barrel tho, its my most accurate AK. Haven't had any trouble since, probably at around 4k rounds now. I suspect that alot of the ras47 problems are cast trunnions that are cracked.

This has been one of my favorite videos that you have put out in a while. I am not a big "AK guy", I just like reliable firearms that are reasonably accurate. I don't compete in competitions but I can bring home dinner if I need to. I think you hit it on the head when you said that the early versions of Century Arms firearms may have had their problems and a lot of people have seen or heard about examples of those problems. You are also correct when you said that Century Arms seems to have learned from their early issues and for a while now has produced good quality firearms at a good price. I did my research and bought my first and only AK about 4 or 5 years ago. It is a Century Arms AK with wood furniture and it was accurate (thankfully) right out of the box and has been completely reliable from day one. I don't care about the AR/AK comparisons or how accurate one format is over the other. We are around the same age and I served in the military around the same time as you, Paul. I was around a lot of older guys that pushed the "I will never own a commie gun" talk, etc.. It kept me away from AK's for a long time. I enjoy shooting and I still remember how impressed and pleased with the AK I was from the very first time I shot one. So, I was very late to the AK game but I have tons of fun when I shoot the AK and that's what I like more than anything else nowadays..... having fun with reliable and reasonably accurate firearms. Oh yeah, especially when they are well priced. Great job on this video. 👍

👍 The first two years of SIG 935 production, about half the people said "I had to send it back". SIG invariably fixed whatever the issue was and everyone who did send theirs back was happy (great customer service!). None of the 935's made since then appear to have any issues. Most will acknowledge SIG as a high quality company, but this points out that things can change when a company makes an effort to fix problems.

I took a friend to the range and let him shoot my Walther PDP. I'd already put 500 rounds through it with no problems at all. He immediately started having stovepipes every round and said it was a "trash gun". After a few minutes of working on his limp wrists, suddenly he was shooting without issues as well. I know that limp wristing isn't an issue with a rifle but it does make you wonder what the perspective is when people screech about how bad a gun is. Just because a pretty cool gun reviewer had it jam when he froze it solid doesn't mean the gun is going to give you issues, redditor.

Accuracy is kind of a moot point when it comes to a cartridge you'll likely never fire beyond 350 yards in a real combat situation. There's competition accuracy - which is great if you're doing competition shooting where half an inch can mean the difference between winning or loosing, and then there's combat/battle accuracy. In combat, all that matters is the gun hits the target when and where you want to hit it. If you can consistently pound an 18" plate at 300 yards, your rifle is good enough. I have yet to shoot an AK, but would like to. CLOSEST THING I have ballistically is my .303 Brit Enfield No.4 Mk1*, and while I probably won't be winning any competitions with it, I can still consistently hit 18" steel out to 450 yards with irons, so good enough. * Edit: I should add I hand-load for my No.4, and my accuracy with factory ammo is pure dog poo past 200 yards. With factory, about 3 MOA @100 yards. With hand loads, 0.95 MOA @100 yards, fired from a vice, of course to take myself out as a variable. 450 yard hits are from the bench, supported fire using a sandbag. * A hit is a hit, and when you have 30 rounds, there will be more than enough hits, even with an AK. The Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. should be all the proof you need that AK accuracy is good enough accuracy for war.
@marblemarble7113
@marblemarble7113 2 жыл бұрын
the whole "AK's are inaccurate" is really overplayed, atleast out to 300 yards. To my knowledge the trope originated from Afghanistan where U.S troops encountered alot of rifles with burnt out rifling and just assumed the rifle platform itself was inaccurate. Give a person the same amount of shooting time between an AK and an AR and their groups will be just about the same with only a minor difference caused by the AR's more stable construction. Honestly the biggest difference is just the sights.

Great Video Paul! I have one of the later/current VSKA builds from Century. I have replaced the furniture with Mag-Pul furniture for ergonomic fit and function. Other than that, no other changes have been made. When I first got it, I picked up two of those big sardine cans of ammo made at the bernal plant in russia, (1100 rnds more or less). I've gone through 700 rnds since I got the weapon and it is very accurate, very reliable, and the op-rod, bolt/carrier and front trunnion are in excellent shape and condition. Wear is minimal at best and the weapon has moderate, yet not really an "over-gassed" feel to the operation, (cases fly about 12-16 ft. on ejection). And I have used the weapon in several of my videos on my own channel. I've heard all the put-downs on these in the past, but never saw one that wasn't runnin just fine. Keep up the good work Paul!!
