Despite watching City of Fire countless times. I'd never noticed the panel being removed in TB5 within camera shot. But I'll now always notice it in future. One small detail you overlooked regarding the added 1965 footage is Scot's & Virgil's face mask visors repeatedly changing colour while they're cutting through the doors in the corridor. In the original 1964 footage, their mask visors have a blue tint, but in the added 1965 footage, their visors are fully transparent without any blue tint, matching how they look in the extra 1965 footage of them testing the gas at the base on Tracy Island.

Not overlooked, so much as we weren’t convinced it definitely signalled a time difference. Continuity errors happen in episodes where reshoots didn’t occur. We always try to look for two pieces of evidence to convince us, unless the first bit is concrete. But, on reflection, we should have mentioned it… We’re only human though and there’s a lot to consider… :)

I think City of Fire is the best executed outing of the Mole. In Pit, with the difficulties of getting it out of the pod to start with, the rather clumsy way it burrows in the ground and how it just pops out of the soil inside the pit looks kinda goofy. And in Duchess it being shown to emerge into the basement which is WAAAAY too large for the scale of the vehicle. City of Fire really made the Mole look big and powerful, the initial burrowing is slow and laborious but nonetheless relentless, and when it emerges in the corridor, the image of it cracking open the concrete floor and the pieces of concrete getting flung by the drill really gives a sense of the power of the machine.

The plot point of the oxyacetalene torches causing them to pass out was always one of the things I remembered most from this episode. Its definitely one of the best examples of the padding material they created to boost the runtime of the 25 minute scripts. It adds tension and increases the stakes for the characters without being nearly as harrowing and unpleasant as what they came up with for Pit of Peril. The beat of having the two controllers think they've perished is a very nice addition too as it gives it a good emotional climax. It doesn't really boost the running time, maybe it was just an improvement they thought of later in 1965. It's interesting that the Firefly was only added as filler material since it went on to be one of the most recognizable pod vehicles. It appears in the padding sequence at the start of Terror in New York too, assuming that was also written as a half-hour episode. Do we have any evidence of exactly when the vehicle was designed and built? Was it one of Derek Meddings designs or was it maybe Mike Trim? It would be interesting if the concept of the Firefly was a direct result of the instruction to boost the episodes lengths to one hour. These videos are outstanding, keep up the good work! (is there a reason the deep dives for Pit of Peril and Vault of Death aren't available? They don't appear to be on KZbin)

Interesting to see how the episode was expanded. Looking back at the episode, it is now clear that the Firefly sequence was extra material, as Jeff says nothing about the machine being needed when he sends Virgil off in Thunderbird 2, and the Firefly's cab interior looks completely different to how it appeared in Terror in New York City, which was likely filmed first. Regarding the door cutting sequence, some shots do look to have been re-filmed for the extended episode, as Scott and Virgil's visors have a blue tint in some shots, but are clear in others. It seems that the shots with the blue visors are from the original 1964 shoot, as all of the shots with clear visors are when they're talking about the gas.
@century21films28
@century21films28 13 күн бұрын
@@class87fan54 Yes, that is possible (and maybe the narration should have made this clear). We just weren’t overly convinced by necessarily extra footage when there is no pressing sync reason for it. Unless they increased the number of doors to cut through. Stuff like costumes / set things change in episodes where there is no expansion issue. But we should have made that clear.

The dedication of your hatred towards the Carter family is admirable. One thing I notice about this episode is how different the Mole’s emergence from the pod differs from Pit of Peril. In Pit, they’ve bent the sides of the platform the drill sits on outwards to lower the overall height of the vehicle, and even then it can barely squeeze out of the pod door and down the ramp. In City, the pod and its door are significantly larger and the Mole at full height just rolls out with barely a hiccup and much more satisfying engine sound for such a large vehicle. I’d really like to know when they changed the size of the pod door because it does change, as does its relative size to the pod.

@@century21films28From the looks of it, it seems that early on, the pod’s interior wasn’t set dressed for the external shots of vehicles emerging, they just emerged from the dark interior. It seems that the size change coincided with the addition of interior detail for the external shots. I almost wonder if the difficulty with the size of the Mole prop in Pit contributed to enlarging the pod set in later eps.

I heard Matt Zimmerman once say he started voicing characters on Thunderbirds from Sun Probe onward, so it could be that Ray Barrett was the original voice for the controller before they had Zommerman dub over him when it was expanded, and just forgot one line. It kinda ties in with Pit of Peril too, as the voices Zimmerman did were of characters presumably when the episodes were expanded.
@century21films28
@century21films28 14 күн бұрын
@@TaylorZanderFrancis No it definitely isn’t that, because that scene is not in the half hour episode. And it would be insane to redub an entire character. This is a business after all and every change costs money. Sun Probe was likely recorded the same day, so he would be right.

Great! If this episode already has 10K views in 1 day, then I can't imagine that Century 21 Films isn't already working on a completely new series of episodes. Who has the rights to the program these days?

I thought I was being too critical in the 1960's, as a child with "the most annoying family in the world" 😅 However, this episode no doubt contributed to the general destruction of my toys & my brothers toys by my fascination with creating fire & explosions (chemistry set & fireworks & any combustable fluid) 😮

I grew up with Gerry Andersons productions under 'Century 21'. This was GROUNDBREAKING entertainment for a small boy in the 1960's. Now i finally see how they produced these amazing programmes was so much work. I am however, heartbroken - as I only discovered TOO LATE that the studios, ( near to me in Slough) had been bombed out of existance! I was literally only about 5 miles from the studios. However, I visited that particular industrial estate MANY times, as an adult working nearby and doing a temp delivery job. I dId actually pass by the studios several times not realising Iwas on HALLOWED TURF! I recall the old 1960 ish buildings but never got the chance to visit the studios whilst they survived. So many people knock these films and laugh at the production - trust me - back in the 60's we had mainly BLACK AND WHITE TV............watching boring BBC RUBBISH period dramas and news programs OR we had TECHNICOLOR WITH THUNDERBIRDS SO.....................leave Gerrys beautiful work alone - ( but I do chuckle at your crazy commentaries at times at the 'outtakes' included in the broadcast episode) Jolly Good Show!😭

Is it true the episode was banned by the BBC and ITV in 2001/02 due to 9/11? I recall hearing it was as in the early 2000s BBC 2 repeated the series.

I would assume the "Shooting off the set" was due to the camera having viewfinder "Safe area" marks that allowed for 1960's telecine underscanning and tvs overscan and would never have been seen on original transmission. A bit like the boom mikes in the Tara King Avengers episodes.

@@brianfretwell3886 They almost certainly were shown off film, so it would depend on the telecine operator. The wall of TB5 possibly wasn’t visible but the fire scene must always have been visible (maybe not in b/w but that’s a different matter). Also remember the early video assist gave a very dodgy idea about where the framing was.

@century21films28 Several times during this edition the narrator tells us about the "previous" episode which discussed Pit of Peril, EXCEPT the previous episode DIDN'T do that it features The Making of "Perils of Penelope" and "Terror in New York City". So what happened to The Pit of Peril Unseen Thunderbirds? So far out of three episodes it hasn't featured, despite being promoted ahead and mentioned looking back.
@century21films28
@century21films28 7 күн бұрын
There are six installments so far of Thunderbirds Unseen. The Pit episode was available for a month, but has been temporarily withdrawn for reediting as we now realise a section of it is wrong. Although there is a lot of guesswork involved, we want the series to be accurate where possible.
