Yes, I think in some ways this is WORSE because the only thing that mattered to her is HER image. If a few people got harmed on her way to the top, she just didn’t care. Even beyond the patients, she was an abusive gas lighting boss who harmed so many employees on the way to the ‘top’ trying to hide and protect her secrets.

Yeah I actually think she started out wanting to make a difference and believing she could help people, but she couldn’t and wouldn’t accept the limitations of the technology used in her lab that she believed could be manipulated into fulfilling her dream. The technology needed for that is years away from being able to do what she wanted it to do. She seemed to think if she just got enough money and enough support from powerful people and hired the best staff available, she could make it happen. But she was told from day one that it wasn’t possible. And she did that at the expense of a lot of people in Arizona.

This is such a great, well made point, kudos. If I may add, I think that extends beyond the collapse of the company. Even the situation with her kids. If she did have them to try and avoid jail, somehow, she has now put them in the situation of losing their mother for potentially 11 years. She likely hasn't done this with a shred of malice towards the kids, but she doesn't, can't care about what she has set them up for down the line.

@Isles of Shoals Probably because it wasn't possible to directly tie that testimony to the case. Like, imagine if a prosecutor could call everyone who doesn't like you to testify if you're convicted of speeding, that's what laws like that are supposed to protect defendants against. The ones she got convicted of are the easy ones to prove because there _were_ documents with inappropriate company logos, there were minutes of meetings where she lied, etc. Remember, Sunny is COO, he's closer to the actual workings of the company, so it's easier to tie him to them.

As far as the financial investors are concerned the smaller investors would be hurt the most and I would be less concerned about the super rich who may have lost because they will still be rich. Concerning the patients who received defective tests and were hurt and possibly could have died. It would seem to me Liz could have charged with involuntary manslaughter at the least. Liz in my opinion is a socialpath. Getting pregnant and having a child at the time of the trial. Say that things at Theranos were ok she would have gotten an abortion because it would interfere with her goal to fame and fortune.

People go to jail for longer for having a bag of weed. She deserves at least this much jail time. Her child will have access to excellent childcare because her husband is loaded, with a rich family, it’s not like she’s a single mom with nobody to care for her kid. People like her ruin the lives of everybody she touches. She ruined what’s left of her family’s reputation (bc Enron was a huge scam too), she ruined the lives of countless people who received faulty tests, she ruined the lives of everyday employees in her company, especially those who worked long term because they’ll be out of work and likely have trouble finding new work due to being forced to either associate with Theranos or leave a gap in their work history. And now, she’s ruined the future of her own children.

I'm in my final year of studying psychology and criminology and I've got some insight into Elizabeth's case. There's a phenomenon with high status fraudsters where they know what they're doing is wrong, but they believe that the ends will justify the means, and therefore, they believe their lies to actually be true. Elizabeth knew she was being deceitful, but she believed so much in her vision and she believed that if she could finally reach her goal, she would be helping millions of people and the deceit would have all been worth it. The guilt of lying had to be 'cancelled out' somewhere and so Elizabeth used the prospect of changing the face of medicine and blood testing for the good of mankind to justify her actions

While I do not think the ambition of Theranos could ever work, something similar to IBM's workplace suite might have. Back in the 70's or thereabouts, IBM made a series of machines that were meant to talk together and cooperate for workplace tasks - the printer, computer, monitor, fax machine, and so on were all were all compatible and didn't occupy more than several filing cabinets worth of space. They were popular because they "just worked". A set of medical devices that could automate most of the analysis process, physically passing the sample(s) between each other, sharing results, and sending that information to relevant experts might be possible.

Our chemistry department has the “line” which centrifuges the sample, splits it between two instruments with different technologies, then stamps the sample shut with foil for storage in the line refrigerator. It automatically purges older samples after a certain amount of time. But chemistry isn’t the only department in a lab. Coagulation, Hematology, and serology all have different sample requirements, different collection prep, etc. Trying to stuff it all into a tiny footprint isn’t going to work, unless you want to go back to a lot of manual testing. This would be due to the limited capacities small instrumentation have.

There's an interview somewhere with the whistleblower grandson of one of Theranos investors. He spoke about how his parents, who were well off, had to refinance their home to help pay for legal fees and protect him from the harassment at Theranos. He was repeatedly threatened and the amount of money they had to destroy his life was insane. He said that many of the employees didn't have that kind of power or money but he did so he exposed Theranos. His grandfather thought he was an idiot, but his parents supported him. And when it all came crashing down, he was right. That interview reminded me that Elizabeth was never an underdog "just" because she was a woman. You take just one look at her family and upbringing and it's clear that she was never an underdog. She came from an old money family. She went to school overseas and even went to an Ivy League school. She was never underprivileged like she wanted so many people to believe.

Thank you for making this video! I was a pharmacy technician at Walgreens when they partnered with Theranos and it was such a horrible experience! We had mandatory training to be basically phlebotomist when they had a team that were certified phlebotomists. They would literally would watch us with out helping us. They did not offer NO RAISES!! A lot of doctors HATED theranos! Customers service from theranos would “lose” results patients would be so damn mad. Labcorp and Sandra quest were just shaking their head. A lot of doctors were “paid” to use their services. Walgreens lost ALOT certified pharmacy techs due to this. And I was one of them. ** also I’m from Arizona and once doctors started getting suspicious about the results they would come in order random or all test wait for the result and then go to labcorp and Sanora Quest to compare results.😮 then call us to yell and I would have to give them the Theranos customer service number.

I’m firmly of the belief that sharing information across specialties is incredibly important in medicine, and working together for a more holistic look at patient care is needed (holistic in the sense of looking at the whole, not as in the pseudoscience based “alternative medicine” way), but when it comes down to the actual work, it should always be done by the trained specialists. There’s a reason that most medical jobs require as much education as they do to even enter the field, I wouldn’t trust a pharmacy tech to do my blood tests in the same way I wouldn’t trust a phlebotomist to dispense my medication. It’s just not what they’re trained to do.

A recent article about her is so fascinating. She’s reinvented herself as Liz, a sweet stay at home mother, & completely had the journalist fooled in their time together for the interview. In the article, it talks about how the journalist was told by colleagues “she’s fooled you!” and talks about some of her manipulation tactics. If her scam didn’t make it to consumers/patients, it wouldn’t have been so bad. Her “testing” affected a lot of people and gave them wildly inaccurate results. I really feel for the person who was possibly going through a miscarriage and was given inaccurate results regarding pregnancy hormones, which is key to know if you’re experiencing a miscarriage or if your pregnancy is going as it should. It really bothers me Elizabeth Holmes wasn’t convicted on those charges, it was just the fraud of scamming extremely wealthy people of their $.

The hate that Elizabeth Holmes is getting from the public is well earned. She gleefully and vindictively went after whistleblowers, hiring detectives to follow them and harassed them, she especially tried to destroy Tyler Shultz's life via her attack dog lawyers. She treated her employees like crap, driving one, Ian Gibbons, to suicide, and later in her testimony during her trial, claimed that he, a man who can longer refute her, told her that her fake machines worked. She was eager to take all the credit when she was believed and quickly blame others when she was exposed. She played the victim during her trial, constantly showing up to court holding hands with her parents or Bill Evans to play the poor little girl unfairly being attacked, and then claiming sexual abuse to avoid paying the piper, a slap in the face of real SA victims. She timed her first pregnancy to fall on the month of the start of her trial, delaying it, and so she can also show up to court with the baby and a diaper bag to emphasized that being a mother, the jury should acquit her. Nearly worked, as one juror actually asked to be excused. She timed her second pregnancy so she can plead the belly and be fully showing when she was being sentenced. In my opinion, the justice system treat women and their children the way it does because it will discourage them from using their reproductive system as a get out of jail card, which Holmes tried to do. Holmes to this day and to the end, have shown no remorse and have taken no responsibility to the lives she had affected, including small time investors who lost their money to her lie, and the people whose lives were turned upside down because they thought they had a life threatening condition. People may not hate her because most of her victims were big time investors who could afford the loss, but because of her constant egregious attitude and behavior.

The patch was supposed to have built-in wifi and Bluetooth so it can communicate with doctors so will know what medicine to insert into your skin. Think about that. @@joen8529 Perhaps, but remember she also sold this as affordable healthcare for those who couldn’t afford expencive tests. One machine being able to test for everything would mean lower costs and better availability after all. She deliberately took advantage of the poor healthcare system that made people desperate for any solution. Also remember you can prick off to the side of your finger rather than at the very tip or on the pad. I have administered quite a few of these pricks both on myself and others, and honestly you don’t really damage your fingertips unless you overdo the pricking on a single finger rather than spread them out. And you could also theoretically prick alternate sites instead of your fingers. Some newer bloodsugar testing devices allow this. Unfortunately this wholly impossible for what Elizabeth Holmes was proposing. A drop is enough for a bloodsugar test, and so far that’s about it. Maybe one day it will be different, but the tech was certainly not anywhere near ready when Holmes made her company based on this idea. Also at home tests are so easily compromised anyway. Even bloodsugar ones. If you handle something sweet and then forget to wash your hands before taking a test then the result will show way higher sugar levels than is actually present. So immagine a test that tests for everything. Doing even a small thing wrong could compromise one or several test results. You can tell there weren’t actual doctors involved with any of this.

Thank you ❤ This case particularly bothers me, as I worked in lab science and cardiac care over 2 decades. So many people were excited for new technology but none of us could see how blood tests could be done with just a few drops of blood from the finger. Yes we were excited because of all the things you mentioned, pain, fear of needles etc. In the medical field after performing venipuncture or phlebotomy aka drawing blood, the first 5 to 10 drops of blood are tissue fluid therefore taking a few more drops before we get to the true blood cells so we were curious how this test would get around that. The amount of people who have had potentially faulty tests results from this makes me feel sick, to boot she got millions for it; A test that most basic level medical professionals KNOW will never work with a few drops of blood and diluting blood samples but she didn't care, she was gonna force it to work regardless who got hurt imo. 47:07 exactly! What does he love about her? The irony of the legacy sad for her child. Failure and coming up short is not a crime??? Probably half of prisoners are parents, why should they treat her with any special care at all? We know why, she is from a wealthy well connected family. Wealthy well connected people literally never face meaningful legal consequences, unless the rare case they are "being made an example of". Prison is for the peasantry, and the more of a peasant you are the more the system is against you, whether you are the criminal or not.

While I understand the frustration that she wasn't convicted on every count, I also don't think it's fair to scapegoat her for all convictions when, as you say, no one did their due diligence on the products they were investing or buying into. You can't blame every problem on this one woman, she's part of a wider, failed system, and the investors and Wallgreens should also be held culpable.

Hey there and to anyone else coming across this comment, just a quick note that the channel FPS Diesel just came out with a video about **certainperson**, and there's a segment where he shared an email exchange between himself and Madison about her thoughts and experiences on the matter (with her permission). I think it's about 1/3rd of the way into his video, and it did include a little more about Madison's account during her phone call with **certainperson**. Soon after the segment, he tells us that Madison is currently really busy and is currently on the fence about making a video about it (which I understand may feel a bit weird for her to share on her channel nowadays).

The irony of Elizabeth naming her dog Balto 😂 don't get me wrong, Balto (like from the animated movie/original story) was a wonderful dog who did participate in the Nome medicine delivery, but unlike the narrative they built around him afterword, irl he wasn't a dog/wolf hybrid, he wasn't an outcast (he was owned by one man but used as a sled dog by another man who cared for him deeply), and he only ran a small and relatively safe part of the course, not the whole thing.

I’ve seen many videos commenting and analyzing the Theranos case. You are the only one that immediately mentions THE actual issue that made this project non feasible FROM THE BEGINNING: Two drops of blood are simply not enough to run 50 tests. It is biologically impossible. But because none of the board members nor management were physicians, they didn’t get it right away. As you say, it is unbelievable that it took 11 years for someone to look into that.

I have to give Elizabeth credit for being able to build so much hype and mystic around herself. If anything this proves that rich/ultra wealthy people are not actually any smarter than us regular povos. I am a petite woman that had a naturally high, small voice when I was young. When I worked at a customer service call center I quickly learned to deepen my voice to be taken seriously, especially with men. So dumb that I had to do that 🙄 It took me taking singing lessons for fun to get my natural voice back, lol. Zero turtlenecks 😅

She deserves everything she gets and more. She's shown no real remorse and seems more upset about the hit to her reputation and that she got caught, rather than that her lies could have killed people. I feel bad for her kids, because it wouldn't surprise me if her actions impact them in the future. I also hate how, instead of taking responsibility, she played the poor, naive woman who couldn't possibly have done any of this. She acts like because she's a wealthy white woman, she shouldn't have to face consequences for her actions. Also, regarding her being a new mom, she did choose to have children knowing what she was facing and that there was a very, very good chance she'd need to go to prison. One of the kids, i believe, would have been conceived around the time she was found guilty. So, at that point, the separation seems to be on her...

@Communist Shoplifting I’m not surprised. White collar criminals often face a shocking lack of jail time. It seems to me like she was betting on this being true for her as well. Then getting pregnant to “seal the deal” so to speak. Problem was she that she chose a lot of powerful victims. Rather than just poor people she defrauded the rich as well. So I’m guessing she wasn’t able to rely on those super nice friends in high placed that other white collar criminals have relied on in the past to get out of things.
