Just stumbled on this vid. I've tried both water based and oil based clay, and I gotta say, I still can't get used to working with oil clay. I guess I have this knack for holding the sculpt while I work on it and it keeps messing up details or blunting sharp edges. And since I like to work small, it kinda makes it worse. With water based clay it's a different story, I feel a lot less restricted, if I need to hold the sculpt I can just dry it a little. Though I gotta admit , oil clay does hold details a lot better but then again, it depends on how you control the moisture in water based clay and doing the details while either wet or dry. Edit: I do see quite a few japanese sculptors who use water based clay ('Stone powder clay' is what they call it) to great success, with details on par with oil clay

I think you have sold me on water based clay… would be great to see more water based content across KZbin.. one of the things always said negative is detail.. but from what you have shown great detail is possible if you learn how To control water based clay… but I think you have solved the problem with mould making if the 3d scanning works well…. As you can scan your monster clay creations and print reproductions.

Finished scanning the hulk and now going to do a print to see how it turned out. But plan on putting it in the kiln this week. Hopefully :)

Wow, what a great informative video! Quick question I have, how much clay did you use for each these awesome sculptures?

Quite a bit more of clay used for the hulk sculpt. Since it requires the clay to be the armature, and it has thick walls. The monster clay version you can pad it quite a bit with an armature and then bulk it with something else like foil. Cheapest is always water clay. I think i might have used 1 entire box of water clay. I usually dig out the insides and get some of that back

Hey! how are you? Have you tried making a mold and working with slip copies?
@SculptSome2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, yeah i have. If you look at some of the older videos i ihave done a few polyurathane molds. But im new to mold making so often i dont get perfect replicas. The newest mold making video i did was pretty success of a lion relief. That worked out great.

@@SculptSome yeah! I just saw that! But since making ceramics we use only plaster cast molds and since I'm getting into sculpture Im doubting on how to make them for slip or clay strips, if you've tried I will love to read about your experience! Thank u love your videos

Oil based is less messy

Agreed. You need a good space for water clay. ANd I would not recommend ceramic clay for sculpting in a bedroom or place where you sleep. Too much dust.
